I just got this pad. I really like it. The light weight was not a problem with me. I say pick it up.
Hmm, this is rather tempting. And you really did notice an improvement in your game? I've been thinking on getting a dedicated fight controller for awhile now. The PS3's stupid, floppy trigger buttons make linking a giant hassle.
There's no question there's an improvement. You're going to face a transition where you're worse than before, because the pad does require more precision for inputs, but this shouldn't prove to be a major hassle to adjust to and once you do... I've only had the pad for a day or two, and once I'd acclimated, I was doing much better.
With a regular controller, you can always blame it: It didn't register my inputs, etc. Not so with this thing. When you fail to pull off a move, it's because you're button mashing. I'd suggest using Training mode so you can see just exactly what you're pressing at first.
Getting used to it might not be so tough for a PS3 user. That pad is better than Xbox pads for fighting.

The first picture you posted shows what looks like a joystick instead of a d-pad? Pleas tell me that's inaccurate?
Nope. But it's more like an arcade stick than an analog stick. It registers only the eight cardinal points, does so digitally, and the amount of movement required is incredibly small.
The only functional difference between it and a d-pad is ergonomics: This feels better for extended play.
