Well folks, I was on Amazon today and I was looking at Catherine for my Xbox 360, figuring I should just go ahead and pre-order it. From what I've read of the game, it's basically a platforming puzzler meets Alpha Protocol/Bioware Game choice system, which is something I heartily approve of.
Anything which gives me complex choices is nothing but a good thing, is something I've always thought. Yet I found that decision coming to bite me in the ass a little bit right about now.
With the upcoming release of Catherine, I found myself facing an interesting dilemma of my own, name thus:
Atlus is providing two versions of box art for each release. The original cover art, and an alternative meant for easier consumption by the less open-minded folk. Normally boxart doesn't really matter one way or the other to me.
Now admittedly, there are a couple of games with excessive fanservice cover art which I keep tucked out of sight when family comes over. X-Blades and games of its ilk come to mind quite readily. Now, Catherine follows the same suit, at least as far as the original cover art is concerned. In fact, aside from the anime roots, it's actually a little more fanservicey than most: Instead of featuring outlandish characters, it's something a little more commonplace with a few freakish elements juxtaposed on the cover.
Now, I know which one I'm ordering. I decided to go for the original, because most of my family and friends know I'm an irredeemable lech anyway. It's not like this would be anything new. However I did give brief thought of ordering the alternate box art, so I'm wondering...
If you're interested in Catherine, are you picking up the edited box art, the original, or does it simply not matter to you?
Not because I'm a butt guy, but because it just looks better.
Also because I'm a little bit of a butt guy.
I actually like the crop jobs. Makes it look like they where special editions with extra stuff in them.
Don't know if they'll have extra stuff in them, but it would be cool.
Could be a mock-up, could be a change. Not the RP on the cover. You KNOW this game is going to garner some media attention just because of the attention its getting from the non-Atlus crowd, so Atlus might be trying to not draw that attention from the media - then again, the media has let the Shin Megami Tensei series with its occultish and violent themes.
If you follow Atlus at all, though, they're kinda known to do reversible cover art at times, which they've done with various PSP and DS releases over the last couple of years.
So if you have that much of a hard-on for the original covers, ask for reversible covers as a pre-order bonus at Atlus USA's forums, though be careful what you ask for as that may affect how Atlus manages the spoils. I dunno, I'd rather have a soundtrack CD than some sexier box art.
There, I had to fill in the blank.
Seriously, though, SMT Nocturne was a much riskier title than this. You fought topless demons - which even showed up in Devil Survivor, I might add - and bondage-geared angels there. And you could make a deal with Lucifer to take on the heavens, among other things.
Actually, according to Amazon, there are two versions of Catherine for each console. A regular and a "alternate box art" which has the cropped versions shown. It's not exactly jumping to conclusions here.
Especially since, according to Siloncera, it's official from Atlus that the cropped versions are variant art which are "more considerate of certain retailers’ broader customer demographic."
*shrug*
