Welcome back to The Reset Button where I take a look back at overlooked and under appreciated games of the past. This time we'll be taking a look at one of my favorite, Future Tactics: The Uprising.
I was turned on to Future Tactics by a former co-worker showing me the multi-player and I kept at it once I started the story mode. Let me start by saying that if anyone has ever had an interest turn based strategy but never had the patients for it this game is for you. Future Tactics starts by taking the basics of turn based strategy and throws the rest out the window as it runs of in a whole different direction. The first thing to go was the grid. Future Tactics drops you onto a far more interactive battlefield. When you start your movement phase you're shown a circle around your character and you can move freely anywhere inside that circle. You can climb up on top of damn near anything or go inside any open structure for cover which may or may not last depending on whether or not you've been spotted by the enemy and if he decides it's worth his effort to blow up the building or cover you're hiding in or behind.
Now on to the next convention breaking mechanic, the combat. Future Tactics takes two polar opposite genres and makes them play nice with each other. The game manages to successfully blend together turn based combat and first person shooters. It does this by having you plunk your character into a spot where your target will be in line of sight and then show you a set of cross hairs that you move to get your target into the center of your sights. The closer to the center of your sights the more damage you'll be able to deal to the enemy. Now this may sound easy but the trick is that your sights will float and waver and you have to steady it using your thumb stick. Once you've got your target lined up hit your attack button once to start a line going across your reticule. Your goal is to stop it over your target and do the same with a second line that swipes across the screen perpendicular to the first line. The more centered you get your cross hairs the more damage you do. And the best part is that missed shots are almost never a waste since the terrain is almost completely destructible and deformable.
Now onto my favorite part, the story. The story is well told but it's not told with great detail. Your given just a little bit of exposition at the beginning of each mission. Not enough to over do it, but just enough to make the characters interesting and to make you want to know what happens next. The thing I liked most about the story is that it didn't drown you in filler, and considering the story spans more then an entire calender year, that would be a rather easy trap to fall into. The story shows you the important bits and drops into a battle and then moves on to the next important thing. And I feel that it merits mention that this is the only game that I've ever seen where two characters relationship develops beyond the usual falling in love and moves onto their sexual relationship and the consequences of that relationship which results in pregnancy. The best part is that it does all this very subtly instead of throwing it in your face and going, "Look at them, they had sex, and we're trying to cater to an older audience by having our characters have sex." Instead, it gives you the most mature and tasteful presentation of an adult relationship in a game I've ever seen.
So there you have it. A look back at Future Tactics: The Uprising. If you're interested in it make sure you track down a copy. I've seen a lot of Best Buy stores with brand new copies for four or five bucks for PS2. If the PS2 isn't your platform of choice you can still track it down for the X-Box and Gamecube for dirt cheap. Thanks for once again checking out The Reset Button. Peace.
