I was surfing around online and to be honest I don't remember where I saw it, but there was a post in regards to the fact that Zelda is a painfully underutilized character. This got me thinking about what could be done to change this and the obvious solution would be to make her a playable character alongside Link in a co-op Zelda game. But doing this raises the question If I'm playing as Zelda then what the hell is the story since clearly Zelda doesn't need rescuing?
I think I've managed to come up with a solution. And so I give you my concept for the first Co-op Zelda game, The Legend Of Zelda: Royal Alliance.
The story opens up with Link and Zelda at the alter tying the knot at long last. After the wedding and celebration Link and Zelda leave for their honeymoon and upon their return they find the kingdom under Ganon's rule and hearing rumors that the king of Hyrule hasn't been seen or heard from and that everyone fears the worst. All this information is conveyed to the newly weds by group in a camp outside Castletown's walls as they have all been driven from their homes by Ganon's horde. The refugee's also tell Link and Zelda that Ganon has placed a bounty on both their heads and that they are to be brought to Ganon dead or alive. Just as the royal couple get a grip on all this they are ratted out by one of the refugees and flee back the Ordan village where Link still has his Hylian shield and Master Sword stashed away along with his archery equipment which he gives to Zelda. From Ordan Link and Zelda trek out to the next town over only to find that Ganon's goons have driven everyone into hiding and that the head of the horde that's taken over the town has set up camp deep in the mountain. After fighting their way to the heart of the dungeon and defeating the ring leader Link and Zelda return to the town and talk with the townsfolk only to discover that one of them has heard word that one of the palace guards made it out with Zelda's sword and that he's taken refuge amongst the Zoras and that the royal weapon smith fled to the forest and is working on something for both Zelda and Link. Deciding that knowing that Zelda's sword is with a palace guard in the Zora's domain is more solid information then having head that the weapon smith simply had something for them they set out to retrieve Zelda's sword first. Upon their arrival however they find that guardsman hid the sword and that he's been taken hostage a rogue Zoran that's holed himself up deep in the heart of the water temple. After speaking to the Zoran Prince and out fitting themselves for underwater combat including the weighted boots and Zoran crafted archery equipment made for underwater use for Zelda and a special polish for Link's sword to keep it from rusting. Once they defeat the rogue Zoran and rescue the royal guardsman he tells Zelda her sword is hidden just inside the entrance to forest.
So onward toward the forest they trek to retrieve Zelda's sword and to find the royal weapon smith. Once they arrive at the forest entrance they find Zelda's sword just where the Guard said it would be. As they journey further into the forest they find a makeshift workshop that looks like it was broken into. Just as they walk out of the workshop they see a someone bearing Ganon's crest run into the forest. Zelda and Link go chasing after him only to be led into the forest temple and they fight their way through only to find one of Ganon's underlings waiting and the royal weapon smith tied up from a tree branch overhanging a pit of skulltulas that starts to break. Just as the underling is defeated the tree branch snaps and Link dives to save the weapon smith as he falls. The next scene opens up back at the weapon smith's shack and he tells Link and Zelda that he was crafting a new bow for Zelda and a new sword for Link as a wedding gift to give them upon their return from their honeymoon when Ganon came and took the castle by storm. The weapon smith tells the royal couple that he had nearly finished their gifts and managed to escape the castle with them. All that was left to be done was put the final piece into each of them which he was going to do once they returned. When asked why he was \going to wait for them to return to put the final piece in that sword and the bow he tells them that the final pieces are each of their pieces of the Triforce and that using a setting technique passed down from his ancestors that it would imbue each weapon with incredible power. So handing the weapon smith each of their pieces of the Triforce the weapon smith works all through the night and come the next dawn wakes the royal couple and gives Zelda her finished bow and Link his new sword that has a cross piece that is down swept instead of the normal up swept look of the master sword and has a noticeably less broad blade on it. He also tells them that part of the Hylian army has set up camp east of Castletown and are preparing to lay siege to the castle to retake it from Ganon. So eastward they travel.
At last they come upon the camp of the Hylian army. After meeting with the captains and generals it is decided that more time is needed to prepare for a full scale assault. Just as the meeting draws to a close a messenger comes bursting into the tent with news that other part of the army has come under attack while searching for the half of the army that they were separated from when Ganon attacked. So Link and Zelda set out with their half of the Hylian army to rescue the other half that's further north. Once the battle is over Link and Zelda rally the army and tell them to ready themselves for the retaking of the castle at dawn. Night falls and and the army readies itself. The dawn comes and a cut scene shows the army rushing the castle and Link and Zelda on the front lines fighting their way up to the castle walls where they each use a grapple chain to ascend the castle walls and fight their way down to the ground and into the sewers where they make their way into the castle and work their way to the throne room where the final battle with Ganon commences. Upon delivering the final in game blow to Ganon he is knocked back and Zelda reaches for one more arrow to put Ganon out with with but finds her quiver empty. Picking his sword up from the ground after having it knocked loose from his grip, Link notices the the bottom of the hilt looks like it's knocked the same as an arrow would be. So sword in hand he stand behind Zelda and his hands with hers puts his sword into her bow and the pieces of the Triforce glow blindingly bright and as the light fades the sword is shown to have changed into and arrow bearing Links piece of the Triforce as it's arrowhead and together they loose the arrow as it deals the fatal blow to Ganon. Just as Ganon dies one of the Hylian soldiers bursts into the throne room telling Link and Zelda to come quickly because they've found the king. The next scene cut's to the dungeon where the king is. He tells them that Ganon tortured him trying to find out where Link and Zelda's pieces of the Triforce were and that he wouldn't give in and tell him but that Ganon's torture had taken to great of a toll on him and that he was about to pass. Just before he does so he tells Zelda and Link that he knows they will rule over Hyrule with great wisdom and courage and then closes his eyes and passes. The final scene of the game shows the king being buried with Link and Zelda standing there as he is lowered into ground. Once buried they turn and walk away and they camera fades to black and then fades back in and shows Zelda and Link sitting, crowned on the thrones in the throne room and Link reached over and offers his hand and Zelda takes it. The camera then zooms in on them holding hands and as it gets close enough it shows links wedding band that has the eagle with the Triforce in it engraved on the top of his ring and then the credits roll and the game ends very solemnly.

Zelda games aren't about goddamned Zelda. She's a McGuffin, if anything. I'm not repeating myself about the "Legend of Zelda", as in the actual Legend. If you want to know what it is, look it up yourself in the Zelda II instruction manual.

The problem there would be that a Ganon game would probably be way more action oriented . . .well . . .he'd probably have to dungeon crawl to increase his powers . . .
Either that, or a futurized setting
