Ladies and gentlemen, our industry has evolved. That's leaves us with a rather large problem. Our ratings system has not evolved with our industry. The simple fact of the matter is that our ratings board has gone from useful to irrelevant to flat out over stepping their bounds by bullying companies and websites that it has no authority over and no right to make demands of. Ladies and gentlemen, we have out grown the ESRB and it is time to leave it behind.

If we are to leave behind the ESRB who or what will fill it's void and how do we get the general game buying population on board with a new organization? First and foremost is who could be trusted to create a new an effective ratings system. The simple answer is that it should be us in charge of ratings.

The not so simple answer is that we as gamers should be electing gamers, people like us who understand and appreciate the medium in an intelligent, thoughtful and responsible way should be nominated and elected to a new ratings board every two years. From there it would be up to these fellow gamers to begin to self regulate our own industry in a responsible manner. To show that we can have the interest of the parents and children that want to enjoy gaming as we do.

One thing that must change however is the encouragement of the education and accountability of parents when it comes to purchasing age appropriate games. The ESRB had released several public service announcements and released them to major gaming retail chains. But that's where the attempt ended, and that's not enough. A new ratings board would need to find a way to further educate parents and encourage the accountability of the parents of young and impressionable gamers.

We are at a point in the gaming industry where we can no longer afford to be the constant target of politicians and lawyers. We need to encourage developers to not be afraid of censorship. What we need is a ratings organization that will stand up and defend our medium against grandstanding lawyers and politicians that want to use the games industry as an easy target to make it look like they are defending our countries morals when all they are doing is stomping on the creative and artistic freedoms and rights of game makers. The creative minds in gaming development deserve to be free to express their vision as best as they can and to be judged by the consumer and not by a ratings board that struggles to stay relevant as year after year goes by. We should be sophisticated enough to decide for ourselves what we can and cannot play. We should not have to put up with muted and toned down versions of a developers concept just so that a game isn't forced into retail murder by receiving the dreaded and frankly worthless AO rating.

I would like to think that this could be an evolved version of what Jim Sterling once suggested when he proposed Gamers For Gaming. It's time for us gamers to take charge of our own industry and stop being the victim of a faceless, overbearing, and irrelevant organization. It's time for a new order in gaming. It's our time to stand up and take the reigns and determine the fate of the gaming industry for ourselves. Gamers, we must stand tall, unite for the cause and defend our right to choose for ourselves, what we play.

I don't think we need to overthrow the ESRB as much as we need to change it from within. The system in place is at least decent. Lazy parents are still forced to see the rating on the box (even if they ignore it), games consider how they will be rated and how that will effect sales, and all retail games go through the rating process. It's not perfect, but no system of that sort is (look at the movie and music ratings for instance).

If gamers and parents bound together, we could probably do more to change the system in place than to overthrow it and create something new from scratch. I do agree, however, that something needs to change. I just think that "something" is, in reality, many different things and will involve more than a new rating system/board will be able to address on its own.

There are so many ways to get round it though, heck when all the GTA's were out I wasn't allowed to play them from 12-16 but from 12-14 I just played them at my friends houses, and the 15-17 I just bought them myself, borrowed them or asked someone to buy them for me.

However some children may be susceptible to violence or prostitution in GTA so it might be hard to change ratings, I wasn't and I'm sure no one else here was. But I agree slapping a 16+ label on some things is ridiculous. As someone who has a slight baby face it gets fucking annoying getting asked for ID for shit, so it would also have to be the stores duty as well to change their silly attitude.

I've asked stores about his and they always say the same bullcrap, "well if an inspector walks through that door right now I could get sued", take a fucking risk, the doors shut with glass which you can see through, if they did, stop selling it to me.

Anyway I agree it should be changed, MAYBE even brought down, not sure though.

I don't think we need to remove the ESRB it's essential like any given media, the BIG problem here is controlling Birth Control and no letting THOSE FUCKING RETARDS from having childrens.

I swear to John Maynard Keynes I sold Godfather II to a mom being bugged the hell out by her kid only to make him shut the hell up. Even if we told her that the game was violent and out of place for little Jimmy. People are so dumb they can't even think logically.

STOP MAKING CHILDRENS IF YOU CAN'T TAKE CARE OF THEM.....PROPERLY|

@themizarshow. I would say you're right but my concern comes in the fact that we're talking about an organization with no accountability and no transparency. that terrifies me. i think at this point it's to far gone.

@kraid. trust me. i've been there and done that. i worked in gaming retail for five years. the things i've seen in regards to poor parenting make me sick. you should have to take a test to be allowed to procreate. but still, if left to the esrb, educating the parents and retailers will go no farther then it already has with their ads that nobody pays any fucking attention to. we as gamers i would like to think are considerably more intelligent then most want to give us credit for and i'm willing to bet that if tasked with it we could put together a much better way to educate the public.

Parents know what the ratings are, can see them on the box, but most don't bother checking the games out before they pick them up for junior. Then whenever some kid gets a hold of a copy of GTA and does something stupid the press jumps in and blames the game, developers and everyone instead of the child, or his stupid parents who weren't watching him when he got into trouble.

It's not that parents aren't educated about the ratings, its just that they don't think its important, until it personally offends them.

There are many changes I think the ESRB should make, but I don't think they are obsolete yet. Rather then overthrow them perhaps gamers should make a united effort to help them change the way videogames are viewed by the general public.

Zodiac you're wrong but then again you are right. About 40% of the parents I deal with don't care much about the ratings but the other half is completely unaware of what the letters even mean......

It's a mix between ignorance and straight up retardation.
