Feel The Hate: X-Box Live
megatron0016 | 10:37 PM on 09.09.2008 17 comments

Let me first start by saying that X-box Live is not a terrible service or anything of the like. In fact it's done a ton of great things. However it's done something terrible to our industry. It's damn near destroyed honest to God socializing.

Thanks to X-Box Live and other services akin to it the want or desire to go out and game has all but disappeared. We've already all but lost our arcades to X-Box Live. following hot on the heels of our arcades is the weekly get together. Fewer and fewer games are allowing once great system linking in favor of online multiplayer only, all so companies can make a few extra dollars selling you their online service.

It used to be when we were kids we would all get together at someone's house and kill an entire day playing video games. Now we kill several days a week playing video games but it's not together anymore, and you can't tell me that those of you that have those memories aren't the best.

And to address the vanishing arcade scene. What's happening should be a crime. The arcades are where the best of the best came to show what they've got and under the scrutiny and pressure of everyone watching no less. The arcades are where we went to experience the latest and greatest gaming had to offer us. And again, it was a place we gathered in solidarity. We as gamers, came together to game together for all the world to see.

But now thanks to X-box Live and the like, all that is vanishing. Now all we are left is a couch with only one ass print on it and we as gamers who now only know each other as made up names and the disembodied voices in our earpieces.

....it's really not Xbox Live's fault we're no longer....together. Blame the internet as a whole for that.

As for arcades, they were already dying out in the US before the net/online gaming services. I'm sure the net/online gaming pretty much knocked it 6 feet under everywhere but Cali and texas.

Also it's not helping when most of the fools that live near you are basically states away and the ones who play games only play Madden and suck in Fighters. see my drift?

oh duh...also Arcades are dying due to newer machines being way too much and the need to pump up prices to like a dollar or so. Seeing kids and their fat selves think a dollar is robbery (and in some cases, like fighters, they are.) they'd rather play at home...online...and talk trash. instead of in the face. If anything, Economy's shitty rate is also making it hard for the arcade business to stay afloat. Can't rent out a place if you're not getting enough back from the games.

the push for an online gaming community like live sure didn't help anything. and like i said, it's not just arcades we lost, it's the general gaming get togethers and socializing that seemed to go right out the window along with everything else at the same time

How is XBL to blame? People played online long before the Xbox was around, blame the new generation for being anti-social.

online gaming was around before xbox live but it wasnt pushed the way it has been until the ps2 and xbox came around

Considering I live in Texas and all my friends are in Va, it is a get together for me. With work and everything alot of the time when we got together it was to go to the bar, and just bullshit.

Shin Oni said pretty much exactly what I was going to say about arcades.

My friends and I still get together to play video games sometimes. X-Box Live and online play in general haven't changed a thing about that. I'm just disappointed that there are so few >2 player single console games around. Prime reason I'll be getting Castle Crashers is for the local four player goodness.

As for the arcades: Good riddance. Never could understand why anybody liked them.

see for me arcades were a social experience. I'd go with a buddy and we'd jump on a four player game like turtles in time or simpsons arcade and you would inevitably meet one or two other people that would jump on and play as well and you would have a great time hanging out with somebody new.

I still play a few games with friends on the same console - fighting games like Soul Calibur 4, or side scrollers like Castle Crashers are a good example.

But I have to say FPSes and games like Gears of War are a real pain with split screen mechanics, and Live has really opened up the doors for these sort of games to be played cooperatively.

Playing Goldeneye back on the N64 days with 1/4 of a screen is nowhere near as good as playing over the net with a whole screen in this day and age.

see that's one of those other very subversive ways live has shot down the old get together is by being the only option split screen aside for multiplayer as opposed to system linking which i've always had a blast at lan parties no matter what were all playing. i can't tell you how overjoyed i was the instant i heard high voltage had 12 player system link running on their test kits for the conduit and that they are looking to include system link in the final build

I personally thought playin Goldeneye on a small (or semi big back in the day) screen 4 player was fun. It's friends so it's not serious trash talk or anything serious, and you can all laugh and pause the game to laugh at how stupid/silly/crazy a kill was. I'd think those 4 split screen experiences would be awesome if the right TV was at use. (seeing PS3 and 360 kinda force you to have a HDTV to see any game at a decent rate.)
