Thank you for your $65...idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I'm about 36% in this game and I really haven't been playing it that much. Between a few sessions of online co-op and some offline play, I've managed to reach the cuff of this game's half-way point...WTF?
I think we can all conclude that this game isn't truly a next-gen app. Fair enough. It's still wicked fun despite glitches and PS2 physics, but what the fuck is up with the depth of this game? Aside from challenge/betting games (which, IMO, are pretty boring), all you can really do is make sure you bomb all the targets, kill or capture all the HVT's, find the hidden red boxes and unlock all landing zones. Come on, that's lame..there's no way that is gonna be enough meat to satisfy a gamer that lusts for the sandbox.
Not only that, but the map of Venezuela is sooo deceiving!!! It seems large, and I know the first Mercenaries had two average sized maps separated as "hemispheres", but it was chock-full of residential or industrial areas.
75% of the Mercs 2 map is all hilly landscape dotted with ferns and palm trees, with an occasional broken down shack. This game's world map is like a shitty bologna..a little taste, all filler. The scale of it doesn't really impress me when all I'm doing is flying over it or speeding through it.
Starting to get let down, 2 weeks in to this game. I still dig it..but I should've waited on snatching this up.
There is A LOT MORE to do besides destroy buildings and HVT.
Pick a faction, and at each faction HQ they give you a mission to unlock a new HQ, which has a mission (and shop) for a new HQ. Eventually you will run out and the main HQ of that faction has a mission that progresses the story.
You start off with 3 factions, UP, VZ, Pirates/Jamacans. You can do all their stuff or mix and choose or what not. And eventually you move on to the new factions like UN and People's Republic/Chinese.
The map gets a LOT bigger. It is really big.
I am mostly done (past 50% for sure) and my current faction is People's Republic/Chinese and I have to DESTROY a bridge leading to the UP HQ, destroy the UP sky scraper, and destroy UP supply depot. Big epic mission is epic. It is challenging solo play, darn you partner for leaving me!
But yeah, play more, you get MOAR factions, MOAR weapons, MOAR vehicles, MOAR land, and most importantly MOAR bigger explosions. Seriously, wait till you get the Fuel-Air RPG and you will be in LOVE!
i don't doubt that the missions and gameplay gradually get better and better..i'm just worried that once i've done all the contracts and collected most of what's out there, i'm left with a large, barely populated map of dumb npc's...just like the first one.
in the first mercs, when it was all said and done, i'd just jump around looking for those spawn points where tiny skirmishes would break out, so i'd have some shit to blow up..it got old real fast.
tazar:
i was playing it single player last night and this morning and i find it to be just as enjoyable as the first mercs..though with a buddy, it really is 2x the fun. smooth as a baby's ass too, i'll agree.
It's difficult to explain, because I want to hate the game, but the sheer joy derived from blowing shit up is enough to keep me playing.
That and spending time with Stormare.
I've beat the main story once. I loved the game. Sure its a bit repetitive, but most sand box games are. Did you play crackdown? that game had one mission type.
As you get farther in the game more and stronger enemies appear and you get access to better weapons and bombs.
I reviewed it and gave it an 8/10. Its mindless, but a ton a fun.
'Nuff said.
I think the original handeled contracts better with the deck of 52. Each of the 52 had a little blurb about them and you had to actually explore Korea to discover their locations. Mercs 2 not so much. Each HVT is interchangable with the next, their locations are plotted out on the map and even the HVT encounters are interchangable since they are all set up exactly the same.
I don't understand some of that changes to the mercs formula. Like why can't I move while having an airstrike beacon equiped like I could in the original? It baffles me. The AI they didn't even bother with. However, the AI has been "upgraded" to see through wall and other objects so stealth isn't an option. And why the hell does eveyone in Velenzuela speak English? In Mercs 1 Koreans spoke Korean - Russians spoke Russian or at least something that sounded close enough to fool me. The dialog in Mercs 1 could have been gibberish but it wasn't in English so it didn't get as annoying hearing the same lines over, and over, an over, and over.
I think Pandemic is talented dev but you wouldn't know it from this game. It seems like they dialed this one in. Mercs was on of my top 5 games last gen. It was a great game that deserved a better sequel.
Despite that I think the game will sell well and Pandemic/EA will use the argument that it sold a million copies so obviously most folks didn't find issue with it or some other half-baked argument like that.
Oh well..you fooled me once Pandemic.
Very dissapointed.
horribly glitch ridden game..but i kind of appreciate it. NES-esque feelings of nostalgia.
That is all.
Fuck this game.
Fuck it.
