With all this Grin bashing lately, I feel compelled to contribute a retrospective review of their biggest letdown, Bionic Commando.
Acting as a reinventing of the franchise in the form of a sequel to the original Bionic Commando, this game has been branded as the cornerstone to Grin Studio's demise. I used to obsess over this game prior to its release, and although I am a huge Bionic Commando fan, I will admit this next-gen release falls very short.
Honestly, games like this, Mercenaries 2 and to a certain extent MGS4 are what make me ignore media hype and wait for titles to drop to $30-$40 now before I snag one.
So, they changed the hot dog arm and we all thought salvation had been delivered. Boy, were we wrong.
Let me be fair, though.
Bionic Commando has some pretty graphics, and you simply can't hate on the swinging feature. Having that sense of freedom in a game world really improves the immersion factor, if you ask me..
..But what's up with the radiation barriers!!!? Such a cheap tactic, and a frustrating one at that. I would've preferred some implementation of a natural barrier in the level environment as a means of forcing a linear path, but that's just me. The radiation clouds were such a prominent feature throughout the game, yet the weapon that caused them was barely explained.
This leads me to another complaint. Clearly this game lacks enemies to fight. After you clear the few pockets of resistance in each level segment, they never respawn. So then, there should be some sort of emphasis on exploration, right?
Unfortunately, the stupid radiation barriers prohibit that, and I wouldn't call the "hidden items" as an incentive for searching every nook and cranny of a stage. I appreciate the bonus concept art, but it's really not that much of an easter egg. That kind of shit should be a given nowadays, if you ask me.
What was with the amount of bosses in this game? What, two? The molehole thing, and Groeder? Seriously??!?! This game actually LACKS a final boss. I couldn't believe that. Hey, when I beat this game I felt like I had been dumped by the love of my life. I was so jaded. What the fuck was with the ending, too? What a cliffhanger. (har har, get it)
Some other comments:
-Why did they eliminate the hacking mini game that was in Rearmed? It was such a good idea! What, because it's like 20 years later, hacking is so fucking easy now? Bullshit, man.
-Why even provide us with the ability to revisit levels when we can't carry over the skills we unlock during game progression???!? Why would I want to revisit earlier Ascension City levels, when I can't even throw a fucking car or kite a dude? Pistol only? Enough.
I have a hard time believing there will be a sequel to this Grin release. I hope so, because I really do love this franchise...but its sales collectively were embarrassingly low. I haven't even touched the multiplayer aspect but I'm betting it's dull as hell..
Out of 10, I give this title a 6.5..and really, I don't like owning any game that's below a 7.
I'll deal with it though. And keep hope alive for a better sequel.
Next time, take your arm off first..
Some off the most thought out critiques i've found about this game are found here.
-Hacking Mini Game WOULD have been a plus.
-New Game + not being there is valid too.
-Radiation Clouds... (( I just didn't like the little amount of time it took to see the Game Over Screen once in one. ))
I can tell your deep affection for Bionic Commando as a Series. I think your rage/rant LESS approach to addressing this. In this blog will be appreciated.
I'm sad to see GRIN go to over bad sales. But you have to admit out of Terminator Salvation (Joke), Wanted : WoF (Swear-fest), & Bionic Commando(Admirable Attempt). They kind of had it coming to them... Not many companies besides EA & Activision & Warner Bros. Can make money on Movies Games.
Still Hype is a bad thing. Shooting it down rabidly in the media reviews. Is something that GRIN just couldn't apparently take. I honestly believe it could've used more time in production. JUST for a better release window.
I still stand by my purchase of this Game though.
yeah, sorry about the rage but what a let down! i was waiting for this game for at least over a year. i agree with it needing more time in production..and the sad thing is that i was delayed for like 4 or 5 months to increase quality!!!!
other than Rearmed i haven't played any other Grin release and that's probably a good thing..although earlier video of Terminator looked kinda cool.
but yeah i'll hold on to this title regardless. heh next review i'll ease up on the curses. :P
I beat this game in a day and I must say I really liked it.
It definitely is not a 10/10 game by any means, but it was fun. It could have been a whole lot better if it weren't for some missed opportunities.
The story was terrible, it had an interesting setup and then did nothing with it, Spencer as a character was incredibly unlikeable (I wish they had kept his personality the way it was in BC:R), and Mike Patton... the man is incredible but he did a terrible job at voice acting in this game. Be honest now, you know it's true.
I really hope that Capcom make a sequel but they do it in house, as there is so much potential here, you just couldn't see it in the final product.
wow, you beat Bionic Commando in a day!??! damn.
i agree with the story being less than mediocre, but i wasn't concerned about it to begin with...just to be able to swing around wildly was the main selling point for me. i will admit Mike Patton (who i respect) did a lackluster job. he had a couple of good lines but i was really hoping that he was going to deliver more of his own personality to Spencer, which he didn't really..at all.
like you, i'm still hoping for a sequel to set the franchise right again. i think it's inevitable..Capcom knows what the fans love.
Bionic Commando for $20 was a great deal, and I didn't hate the game. Since I owned Bionic Commando: Rearmed (which was A+ top-notch), I didn't even have to look at the douchebag in dreads!
@Puppy Licks - Capcom definitely needs to stop outsourcing titles. I have high hopes for Dead Rising 2, but it's also being developed outside of the company.
Lost Planet 2 (and its MT Framework 2.0 engine) do give a glimmer of hope, though. The game is fully being internally developed, and Capcom has stated that it will allow the engine to be used by outsourced developers in the future. That will at least provide the groundwork for those developers, and hopefully allow them to focus on making the game and its premise good.
