There is something I have noticed in my two weeks on the D-toid community. When someone posts a blog, a flurry of people like to hit it up in one of two ways. They either 1) actually extend the conversation in their comments and discuss the article or 2) they drop a ton of f-bombs and tell the blogger that their blog has something wrong with it. Now, don't get me wrong, but I hate blog trolls and spammers just as much as the next guy. But when you write a comment to tell someone that their writing is junk or there is some other problem with their post, don't say, "Dude, your fucking writing looks like shit. Go fuck yourself asshole." or "You're such a fucktard. This sucks you asswipe." All that does is make you an automatic douche. The community rules do ban certain things like spamming, being a troll, and also, BEING A DOUCHE BAG. Now, if you are in a heated debate, say, about the 360 or PS3, and somebody says, "The 360 sucks balls. All they do is talk about Halo shit. I fucking hate Microsoft.", then an appropriate response very well could be, "Well at least the 360 has some fucking games to play in the first place, asshole." That would be somewhat acceptable IMHO because it is conversation based. I hate f-bombs, period, but I know that other people like them, so they are fine in a conversation text. But when criticizing a blog, don't be a douche. If you are pointing out a violation of community rules, then by cussing the person out and being an asshole you are breaking them yourself.
Just thought I'd mention that. I have a good feeling that somebody or some people are going to leave comments just like I talked about above in their comments to this blog. But please don't. I am a firm believer in being a tattletale, so don't treat me like shit for posting my opinion. I'd really appreciate it. :)

However, I do believe that Halo is a highly overrated FPS. Only people like fucking Vexed Alex actually like that fucking game, and that because he is a fucktard.
Fuck
also, fuck
hide it and after that go fuck yourself
By the way, you're really asking for it by posting this blog. It was really weird in the sense that you posted this like you were going to run down the hall and tell the guidance counselor (Hamza) your classmates were being mean. All he's going to do is say "tough it up, kid".
Also, who are you? You kind of just came in, advertised your website and podcast just 6 days, then never bothered to get to know anyone. I'd just remake your account, get an avatar, and start over.
I agree that it's a bit harsh to see your work criticized, but this is hardly the only place that's going to happen.
The internet (and most of Destructoid) is uncensored, unfiltered, raw. It's like the wild west in a lot of ways, anarchy and survival of the fittest dictate what rises to the top and what sinks to the bottom. It takes a while to get used to, but if you develop a thick skin you'll be better off for it. If not, this is hardly the only gaming site on the internet, you may be able to find one with a more genteel userbase. Personally, I like the fact that this site and its readers don't hold back, whether in their reviews or elsewhere.
When I started here my posts were criticized, and rightly so... I didn't understand the rules, the landscape, how I was meant to composrt myself. I was angry for a while, sure, but I figured there was a reason I was being criticized and did my best to eliminate it by lurking more, seeing what others were doing and trying harder to fit in. You can react to flames by burning, or you can let them temper you into something stronger.
What the shit??
If there is one thing I detest, it's retarded terms like f-bombs.
Fuck is just a word dude. Swearing is normal on this site (and in everyday life if you get out of home a bit more).
Also, one of them got set on fire.
Welcome to Destructoid.
Also, cocks.
The negativity can be very intimidating and can deter newcomers from joining or posting (and not necessarily just the villager currently being burned at the stake... but also people that are reading that might have been considering setting up shop in the village).
On the other hand, this is one of the few gaming sites where personal blogs are given a decent showcase and not hidden away in some dark sewer of the site... so the flaming can tell people that they need to step up their game. Bad blogs kick good blogs off the front page, so the community is basically trying to self moderate and to maintain a certain level of "blogginess" on the blog page... be it worthy blogs or blogs of members-in-good-standing. This problem will likely grow as the membership grows, it's inevitable.. so the deterrence also helps to keep the membership levels down to a manageable level.
There are possible technical solutions. A blog rating/voting system could keep the top blogs of the week (or 2 days or whatever) in a sidebar, the "blogs" link could show only blogs that get a certain vote count (with a separate link to show "all blogs") or a handful of members promoted to a blog moderator status could do all of this manually... or another technical solution could be found (including what many other sites do... the requirement for original material rather than a duplicate post from an outside web site).
I'm sure these has been suggested before, looked at... and it really all depends on what the site owner wants, the direction they want Destructoid to go, and whether they want a small or larger community base.
In the interim... the derision, spelling nazis, and "fucking bad blog" comments seem to be the current voting system and if it pushes people to either create better blogs or go away - that's just the way it is.
(and I'm kinda glad that there's not a comment voting mechanism because I likely haven't been here long enough to get away with any site or community criticism and I'm sure this would reach a negative count very quickly... but I'm old and cranky and rarely shut up.. and well, that's also just the way it is)
You join a community with the expressed intent to use the blog system for GRE practice and deride its members and I'm foul?
Gotta love the internet.
Self moderated community. Buncha assholes, but you get used to it. Join the forums, we're much nicer. :D
@Tubatic
Yeah, I know, right? You're the nicest guy EVER.
YOU SHUT YOUR FACE WITH THAT NOISE! I WILL STING YOU!!
Go fuck yourself. Dumb ass.
You came on this site with this intent of flame baiting by bashing the PS3, I told you off because this site's community could give 2 shits about console wars. On top of that your blogs are unreadable and you've already admitted you use the DTOID blog system for GRE practice which is the same as spam as far as most of us are concerned. Your hated more than you think, I don't think there is one person on this website who would stand up for you, even Hamza can't stand you, only reason he hasn't banned you yet is because Hamza is a good guy and he refuses to ban anyone unless there is a really good reason to do it. Plus your comments in your blogs produce a lot of lulz for the community and the staff. ;P
@mbradley- It's really quite simple. People with shitty blogs get told that they have shitty blogs in the comments. That's done because the content of the shitty blog has no inherent entertainment value, and so, people have to create their own entertainment, in this case, by telling them they suck (this serves dual purpose- 1)to let them know they suck 2)as a warning not to suck in the future).
Those with good blogs have two things happen- 1)they get kudos and some good comments. 2)the article is worded so well, they is really nothing else to add.
So there you have it. That's how it works.
Now, you're predicting you're going to get some bad comments with the "f-bomb" in it. You would be right, because you are flamebaiting. You yourself are violating a rule by sucking. This article adds nothing. However, the comments are entertaining.
So, you see? It's all self sustaining. You might even say the cblogs is its own ecosystem. Maybe even a biodome...
Oh dear :(
The internet was created for people who love to hate. It sucks, but you just got to ignore it.
The true measure of character here is being able to take your ass kicking, learn from it, and come back with better stuff. There's no shame in failing every once in a while, but crying about it just whips the masses into a bloodthirsty fervor. Better to take it quietly and expect more of yourself in the future.
Anyway Bradley, its very simple why this happens, I'll outline my theories.
1. D-toid caters to the 4chan crowd, there's lots of stuff and articles and other things that feel very 4chan ish, very immature and the community just eats it up. 4chan as you may or may not know is a cesspool.
2. Most of the community here are high schoolers, with the exception of a few people, I'd say about 80% of this site's community is mostly younger kids and as you know young age+anonymity= complete fuckhead, look no further than De BL00 as the best example of this theory.
3. Hamza is the moderator here yes but he's never told people to stop being assholes thus whenever makes someone that consider a fail blog, they attack that person relentlessly , take a look at the current 25 blogs on the main page, notice how yours has the most comments, why? Cause love people to troll here, if someone writes a nice decent blog it doesn't get many comments but if its a chance to troll and whip out their collection of 4chan reaction images, you can expect 50+ comments or more.
4. Nobody knows how to be nice anymore, again this goes back to my fucktard theory, its possible to tell someone to be nice or ways to tell to improve the blog but most of the people that read the failblog firsts are kids like BL00, Vexed or Naim, since there's no school for them they hang around here all day, refreshing, waiting for new stories and just maybe getting the chance to pounce on a failblog as an added bonus and using their reaction images and feel proud that they owned the internet stranger.
Thing is Bradley that if a respected community member had posted this like say, Yojimbo, this blog would be very different, the people here being asses would have either ignored the blog or said something totally different which comes to theory number 5.
5. Rampant hypocrisy, there's certain people here that can get away with breaking all the un-written rules of the blogs, why? Cause they're popular, even the wannabe reaprar like Chrono will be in those spouting memes with the other idiots in them, its a big problem as how is anyone supposed to take these unwritten rules seriously when they don't apply to everyone.
There's a few people who will give you constructive critic such as Magnalon but unfortunately he's in the minority, most of them you'll get people saying FUCKHEAD, STUPID ASSHOLE, HIDE THIS SHIT, etc, etc.
Another thing is that people seem to be very militant about these blogs but they rarely support the ones they should, its a real shame as a considerable amount of great writers have come here and just vanish after awhile, turned off by the community and the fact that spend an hour or two writing a decent blog and for their troubles they get maybe 3 or 4 comments.
My very first blog I got 1 comment, my 2nd, 9, 5 of them being Vexed trying to do some retarded meme, I've been here 3 years and barely write blogs, mostly due to the community and how they behave when it comes to these blogs.
So I'm afraid that while your suggestions are sound and your heart is in the right place(I would love to see d-toid succeed as must as anyone), everyone you say will fall on deaf ears, you've been judged by the d-toid council and all the troll children have their eyes on you, my advice? Find another site.
If ever I've seen a pot calling a kettle black, that was just it. For a person who manages to to make negativity a point of pride, who manages to keep a ratio of over 33% abrasive/hateful comments, and has been one of the few people warned about a banning from Hamza, you're constantly so oblivious to your own faults.
You also find it very hard to be constructive without being abrasive at best. And at worst, full-on insulting. You are just managing to come off as someone who hates the site and it's community, and stick around just to make sure they know how you feel. And you recommend that every newb trying to find their footing should go elsewhere.
Perhaps it's time to take your own advice. We are aware how you feel. But if you're so down on things, why not try to make a positive difference or take your own advice. You are the very definition of a troll. I can't get over how blind you are to that fact.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
wait wait....
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA
OK I'm better.
You have no room to talk asshole, you come around and defend every new member like it's your job then turn around and make hateful negative comments on the front page and in blogs to long standing members. Just go away already man, get banned again please.
It's all about C-Bombs now! YOU CUNT! :D
The fact that you think I hate the site shows you seemingly glaze over what I say, I like the site, I just think it could be much better and the community is a big part what holds it back.
I have tried to make a difference, nobody listens.
"You have no room to talk asshole, you come around and defend every new member like it's your job then turn around and make hateful negative comments on the front page and in blogs to long standing members. Just go away already man, get banned again please."
MOMMY THE BAD MAN IS SAYING MEAN WORDS.
Like you're one to talk Chrono, or should I say Reaprar, you CONSTANTLY act like an asshole on the blogs and I rarely see you commenting on the blog that actually matter, the hateful, negative stuff is the exact same drivel I've heard from other like minded morons like yourself, again you ignore the good things I have to say and merely focus on what you need to support your shitty arguments, I barely comment on the front page as it is and the few times I say negative things is because of how I feel.
Hell I don't even comment on Sterling's stories anymore since it didn't do anything, I don't like Valve and what they do and I comment on their stories, in fact since you have so much free time, go back and look for my comments this past week, you'll notice most of them are actually quite positive barring a few places.
I don't go to long standing members blogs and insult them, that is a massive load of bullshit and more make believe stories some of you come up again to support your worthless arguments, the only people I've done that are the ones that go out of their way to attack me like Alex, Tewdee and that moron that wrote his "drunkblog" then trolled my blog because I called him an idiot.
Unless you're seriously defending guys like BL00 and Naim in which case, thanks for proving my point about rampant hypocrisy.
Seriously Chrono, all you do is hang around here and insult people when they break the unwritten rules, if anyone here is negative its you so do me a big, big favor and shut the fuck up, you have no room to talk and stop making shit up, it just makes your shitty arguments look even worse.
Its a fucking community blog from a website that tells you not to take things so seriously, there's no reason for so many of you to be so militant about these blogs.
And funny you talk about long standing members? HOW MANY ARE LEFT BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND YOUR LIKE MINDED CRONIES? Even Yojimbo, one of the most respected members here and a pillar of the community doesn't post as much as used to or EDS who used to write daily blogs, now I mostly see him commenting.
Perhaps they have their reasons, perhaps I'm really wrong with my assumptions but the fact that so many people have left and 90% of the comments are just trolling, well, that gives a lot credence to my theory, if you want names of the people I'm in touch with who left the site and used to contribute, I'll be happy to give them to you.
Look, I like Destructoid, I wanna see it prosper but its not going to if people keep acting like they do. Lots of things need to change but I doubt they will since whenever anyone tries to go against the troll squad all you get in return is "NANANANANAN CANT HEAR YOU" *posts 4chan reaction image*
Its a fucking community blog from a website that tells you not to take things so seriously, there's no reason for so many of you to be so militant about these blogs.
This is the reason I no longer blog or comment much in the cblogs anymore. Even the people I dislike, their opinion matters as much as anyone else's here, so to keep trolling and flaming blogs after the first time is just kind of redundant.
And mbradly? You keep it classy, San Diego. If you'd rather say "f-bomb" than the word, DO EEEEET.
Love,
bleh
Nanbu isn't bad, people. Plus he gave me a positive shoutout! Mad Props!
Hoborg admitted he writes his blogs to anger people, and that he enjoys it, so his comments are absolutely null and void, seeing as his wish is to sever the community.
My stance is this: other than Hoborg (lawls), not everyone knows how the c-blogs work. When people would first post-memes or something stupid with an intro, months ago I would sheriff the shit out of them and go "Read the Rules you moron". Now, I just recommend the rules/suggestions to them and hope they take it.
For every 10 fail bloggers, 8 will leave/get banned, and 2 will stay to become great community members. 6 or so of the people who leave will peace out because people told them "fuck you" on their first blog, and they don't know how to take it.
Nanbu is right. As much as people should "suck it up", it doesn't help that they don't really get much of a chance to learn the rules first. Perhaps an app that popped up and explicitly showed them the new members guide would be a great addition to the c-blog signup process.
Either way, I would love nothing more than for people like Blehman to be able to post blogs. That's more great stuff being silenced because of the negativity. COME BACK GUYS.
And you still fail to see why no one likes your blogs. The difficult words are not what pisses people off, it's the rampant flame baiting about how "PS3 IT TEH GHEY 360 IS BETTAH!" When you get right down to it that's all your blogs say, you just use big words to make it sound better when really your just making yourself look even more like an asshole.
You have absolutely no ideia of how HONORED I am to be in the same list as Chronoswing , Vexed and BLOO :) !
Also , you don't see me raping new memebers that much , I even defend them sometimes if they write a blog like my first ones , where they simply don't know how to use BBcode or is from another country and isn't that great with english .
My blogs also got hated hard , but CelicaCrazed and Magnalon for example , were one of my biggest haters and now are some of my favorite Dtoiders; but when I see a CTRL C + CTRL V blog or trolling , I won't forgive , it's as simple as that, also , damn shame ; when you looked like you were going to stop the hating you come back to your old ways ...
I NEVER hated you! Haha, crazy Bogard-avatar-havin' dude.
I know , I know ; I just took the chance to express your awesomeness , and in that case anything is valid !
Fixed.
Here's my impression as of now: Hoborg, stop using your blogs for GRE practice. They sell books, have classes, and produce other kinds of study materials for it. D-toid is not a proper place to flaunt your educational level. No hatred towards you, but you should probably stop. If you would just start writing more with more common language, the flaming MIGHT get better.
As for NAIM, yeah, I'll admit you are a smart ass sometimes. But it's cool. It usually cracks me up more than makes me mad.
Everybody else seems pretty cool, just brutally honest. I really don't mind the flaming. Doesn't hurt my feelings at all; I've already finished high school along with the whole "I want everyone in the whole world to like me!" phase a long time ago. Hell, a woman cussed me out in WalMart because she cut in front of me and I wouldn't let her. Do I know her name? Will I see her again? No, so why get ruffled about it?
Also, thank you BLEHMAN for not criticizing my choice to say "f-bomb". Maybe I'll come up with another word to replace it since so many people hate the term f-bomb.
I didn't mention it, but I respect your decision not to use the f-word. You should create a new term, or use something funny, like fudge.
@hoborg
You're not a popular blogger. People are just waiting for you to leave. Your "I'm leaving" message was one of the happiest times on the c-blogs. Tons of people are actually leaving the blogs themselves now because of you.
Like I said, if your mission was to sever the community with hate blogs and relish in it, mission accomplished.
