Whatever happend to split screen
mattmagoo | 6:42 AM on 03.20.2008 14 comments

Before I get started I am fully aware that split screen EXISTS in games, i just question its implementation.

Recently there seems to be a shift towards online play, I appreciate that, but it seems everyone has forgotten how much fun they had playing split screen multiplayer on the older consoles. Although it is still implemented it never gets talked about on the same level as online play, and it seems that many developers are missing what, in my opinion, makes multiplayer games fun.

I live in a house with 4 other guys, we share a TV and get a pretty shitty reception on it, so gaming is pretty much the only fun we can have in the living room. The ONLY game we play anymore is Halo 3, not because its the best FPS, not because its even that good of a game, but because it has split screen multiplayer ONLINE.

The most fun I have had playing a game is playing 4v4 against strangers in Halo and having the whole of my team sitting in the room with me. You can laugh, shout, have a beer and enjoy yourself. Sure playing local games is fun, but there is something about competing as a team that is really enjoyable.

I bought COD 4 not too long ago and played through the single player, only to realise there wasn't much value left in it for me. I can't play single player games very easily because of the shared TV. This isn't just happening now, I have had this problem since the SNES, I always had to play with my brother, I could never play on my own.

Judging from the amount of people I see as guests playing Halo 3 this happens all over the world, yet developers seem to ignore it. People ask questions on the internet as to whether a game supports split screen online, and in most cases they don't.

I understand that in cases like Call of duty the game is graphically intensive so 4 players online would be a struggle for the 360, but why not do what halo does, gimp up the graphics a little for split screen. You could reduce smoke animation, texture quality, and polygon count and no-one would really be bothered because there would be added value.

Anyway, that was my first rant, expect more!

Welcome! (he says as if he's a regular)

I agree completely, I have fond memories of Red Faction 4 player, all of us huddled around one TV, blowin' shit up.

Good times.

I am having a hard time understanding what exactly you are ranting about. Are you ranting about some games not having local multiplayer online or are you ranting about splitscreen? Or are they both the same rant?

I personally dont like split screen multiplayer.. unless its just 2 of us. Breaking a screen into quaters and forcing me to play while squinting my eyes and being distracted by the movement on the other 3/4s of the screen is a pain in my ass.

Every game has to try and be different. If every game did everything modeled after the one who got it right, every game would be "Like Halo 3... but..."

Welcome.

I kind of have the same problem. Due to college me an my friends have been spread out pretty thin so most of our play time has been on Xbox Live, which is totally fine. But god forbid we actually VISIT each other and play the same games. We end up just playing Halo for pretty much the same reason.

I always hated splitscreen, mainly because I have a really shitty TV (it has wood grain. THAT is how old it is) and all the arguments over screen looking. However the option would be nice. Playing Gears with my brother online is always fun, even though he wanders off a lot and gets killed.

And uses nothing but grenades

And gets killed by that train in that one level

And won't stop team killing

You know what, it sucks playing with my brother.

Ah i love Halo split screen. Local co-op is great, and multiplayer split-screen means that we only needed ever really needed 2 or 3 tv's for a good system link.

Thats the real way to play Halo, btw. Offline, where you have full control of the gametype and map, and have all your mates around to have fun with. Screw xbox live.

conkers bad fur day split screen is rad. we even put a piece of cardboard down the screen so we could do some crazy sneaky team games.

Screen looking is just part of the fun in split screen gaming. It adds another element to the gameplay, and can often make for some exciting action.

If you have a Widescreen, vertical split screen gaming is awesome. Very good rant. Some of my best local multiplayer memories comes from co-op split screening in Halo 1 on legendary.

I apologize for the double post, but I just thought about this:

We all know about that fancy HDTV that can do two players on one large screen by means of those glasses. Is that the split screen gaming of the future? Is that a good replacement for traditional split screen gaming?

lol, I remember playing Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Halo with my sister and friends and they would always look at my screen. What a bunch of cheating bastards.

*sigh* good times

HEY I WASN'T LOOKING AT YOUR SCREEN, I DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE SNIPING! I mean, what? You were sniping?

I love split screen. Hope it comes back, or at least more games give us the option.
