About Me

Native of NC and an all out Tarheel Fan.

I work as an Assistant Systems Administrator at a community college. I work hand-in-hand with our unix box that controls all of our student data and personnel information. I also teach part-time online classes each semester to bring in a little extra dough.

I have a Wii, but the 360 rules my TV. You can check the GC for game types, but I am definitely more of a shooter fan.

Stop the Hate on Xbox LIVE Petition
massiveplugger | 8:20 AM on 06.26.2008 24 comments

Everyone has been in those games where people are doing nothing but saying hateful and racist things to other gamers. It may be the N... word or in my case my southern accent and immediately jumping on my lack of education or inbreeding.

Regardless of what you have experienced it should not take place. If you are one of these people then I hope all Hell is brought upon you one day. I guarantee you do not act like that in public and probably are nothing but a front online. Sessler's Soapbox from G4 TV was the first to rain on these types of people's parade and I love it.

We all know the process of filing a complaint. Sure it might be looked into, but when I played CoD4 I ran into people continuously that I had put a permanent mute on (Red 'X' on their speaker icon) through the dashboard option. I could hear the room starting to get aggravated with the person as soon as they come in. Luckily I could not hear them myself.

Well... Looks like someone is at least trying to infuse changes to Xbox LIVEs policy on how it handles "Hate Communication." Here is a petition that is running for online signatures. Please help in the cause. Thanks to lostassassin13 or whomever created it.

Small excerpt from the petition

Please accept this petition as a formal request for Microsoft and the Xbox Live team to review their procedures in dealing with Hate Speech on the Xbox Live service. The guidelines that govern the issues of Hate Speech are in place, but the existing protocol to enforce them is lacking. The current system calls for the onus of policing this issue on the community at large.

I don't think MS will be able to do much about asshole people, since those assholes pay for live.

Im live in Kansas and I hear those things all of the time on PSN. To many people that sing too.

Talking trash is one thing. It is when people go overboard and start slamming your race, culture, sexual preference, and more.

Sometime trash talking does ruin a game.... But everyone should be grown up to know when enough is enough.

Online you can hide behind your GT and feel safe that nobody can reach out and harm you. That train of thought needs to change.

Jack... Do not look at it like that.

Sign the petition in hopes that change is possible. Xbox already has volunteers that police their forums. Maybe it is time that they create a group that can help with ingame glitching and abusing thier voice.

Maybe they can issue short length voice bans and more until someone on the Xbox staff can look at it.

Its not really "Hate" that we should stop, its "Stupidity".

Yeah, there's a big difference between a friendly round of trash talk (which I support wholeheartedly) and some idiot who thinks it's cool or edgy to blurt out the n-word every five seconds. And it's not cursing that bothers me, just the hatred and ignorance that have no place in online gaming whatsoever. Well, there's plenty of ignorance, but you get what I mean.

Maybe having more accountability for what you say online would improve things a bit. Probably not all that much, sadly.

Or, you can just suck it up, stop being a pussy, and deal with it.

They make a mute button for a reason.

Mute button is your friend. People aren't going to stop being bastards on the internet because of a MS policy change

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but if you think signing an online petition is going to make the XBL assholes disappear you are a funny man.

Not looking for policy changes. We are looking for a way to have people like.... Xbox Ambassadors. They are there to be helpful in all things that are Xbox.

Maybe this group is given a specail online control that allows them to revoke someones voice privelages for two weeks on the first offence.

They would be playing the normal games and just start knocking people out as the move through. It would be a burden for them since it is all volunteer work, but they would be able to handle it better then say..... 10 Xbox LIVE staff workers who never play online.

Coon... It is a step in the right direction.

Free... Great response. Shows a ton of intellect to come on and say that when the post already states that I use the mute button. Still I should not have to use it in every game I play. Holding people responsible for their actions is the idea.

It comes in the same manner as how you are acting now. You would not talk like that in person or in front of your kids (if you have any). You would have a more tactful approach or you would not make it anywhere in the professional world except for flipping burgers.

I started using the mute everyone except friends option, best thing I could have found.

Agent... I use that to know. It works really well. The only negative is that you might not get to run into new people that might be worth adding to your FL.

I guess what I am saying is that it is not fair that you or I feel like we need to use that option to enjoy gaming.

This is a joke, right? What the fuck would an "online petition" do? Make assholes on Xboxlive just miraculously leave? Dude, be happy that M$ at least implemented a mute button. It's been working for all these years...

Massiveplugger, I applaud your effort in this matter. I unfortunately don't think this will do any good, but then again a lot of really good ideas have started off with people saying "I don't think this idea will make a difference". You'll never know if you don't try.

As for me I'll just continue to push the damn mute button until something does change.

Thanks Dragon... Hopefully it will make a difference one day. I did not start the trend some of the gamerparents I know did. I wanted to spread the word.

Actually this is my last post on here or the forums. Really just not my cup of tea. Did enjoy it while it lasted though.

Cheers and good luck to everyone regardless of the way life steers you.

Side note.... Found out my new baby girl (if not before) will definitely be here on Monday (wifes being induced).

I think since MS was nice enough to actually implement a petition and report system, that maybe people should use that instead of saying "Oh it's not gonna do anything" or "It doesn't make a difference" instead of making useless online petitions.

(Honestly, has an online petition EVER worked? even a little?)

The actual enforcement of the existing policy is what's needed. There needs to be repercussions for the people slamming hate speech. Of course any and every person can mute the offenders, but that doesn't mean they should be given a free-pass to continue to do so.

If there's a viable fear of (temporary or permanent) voice or account bans, I'm positive that the abundance of this mindless bullshit would end.

Seriously, that shit needs to be enforced. I'm sick of hearing high-pitched voices stream racist obscenities.

I do my fair share of shit talking on CoD, but 95% of the time it is directed at my friends playing with me. Very rarely will I verbally rape a teammate (other than "OMGz UR A N!GG3R!!! U SAW ME N LAST STAND GO HANG URSELF!")and even more rarely will I berate the other team in the lobby, normally because I'm onloy around the middle of the scoreboard. However sometimes the other team dose deserve a ear raping in the lobby for consistant n00b t00bing or attempting to win with underhanded tactics like glitching.

In the end the "hate speak" on Live dosen't bother me, muting someone is easy enough. Besides nine times out of ten they mouth comes back to bite them in the ass. That being said I can also understand how some people are sick of it and really would like to see and end to it, I just don't see it happening.

One last thing. What I've noticed the most on Live is more (for the lack of better terms) age discrimination and nationalism. You parents want to get their kids and M game, I'm all for it. But when the parents let the kid play online and act like a jackass then I get pissed. If an annoying 13 year old comes in my game and starts talking shit or being annoying in purpose it's open season on the little bastard. Now the Nationalism bugs me the most. My friends and I were playing the other night and this guy started team killing us right off the bat, we hadn't even said a word to him. AFter a few times we kept asking him what his deal was while still trying to kill the other team and all we hard was a biritsh accent saying "You're American." I love that so damn much...
