Pretty interesting stuff isn't it? The key to this contest is to draw a redesign of a street fighter character in an illustrative format. The contest is found here.

The prizes are 100,000 posters printed of your illustration, an original art signed by Yoshinori Oni, a Playstation 3, and a bundle of classic capcom titles.

The problem is, these illustrations are doing much better then something such as... this

Now what the hell is wrong with the picture here. The one with Chun Li, is amazing. You can tell. The artist put a lot of heart and soul into this. You could tell by the attention to detail... WHILE the other two look like they were drawn in less then a day. I mean what is wrong with people in their perspective of what is good and what is NOT good. Seriously, this is all one big fucking joke. Is art really something that can truely be shat on and then flushed down the shitter? I swear people need to get there shit in gear, cause if something like that Ryu or Cammy wins, Capcom will be a laughing stock. That ius not to say some good ones are not in the lead, but most part, it's all mostly shit.

I liked the Cammy one way better than the Chun Li one.

Much like if you watch american idol, there are a lot of people out there that aren't exactly the best artists that have been told by other people that they're amazing, so they think they are.
I've never been one to trash someone else's art, because everyone has different skill levels and me talking smack about it is no better then someone talking smack about mine.
That being said, there are people out there that just join every contest they can, they pump out whatever MSpaint crap they can and enter.
I'm sure the people taking care of submissions for this contest look through it all get massive headaches every day.

Also, after some more thought, this isn't so much a contest about being able to draw well, it's about having a good alternative character design in your head.
So creativity in that area would help more then being able to draw perfectly.

More detail doesn't always make for a better image. Sometimes it's warranted, sometimes it isn't. I prefer the Cammy image because I like its illustrative style compared to the realistic Chun-Li image.

People can have differing opinions you know. Saying that the Chun-Li image is better because of the details is like saying, "Metallica's guitar solos have so many notes! How can somebody like 50 Cent when his songs don't have anywhere near as many notes?"

that's one of the very very few images of chun li that I would not fap to. that said, it's still very well done, obviously more so than the other two, but I'm just not particularly fond of the art style.

the chun-li is meh, the cammy is awesome and ryu is also meh. i think ou're bitching because you're not winning.

I find that the closer you look at something, the worse the flaws look and I've had a good long look at both of the pieces on the site and find that it is true for the Cammy piece and is the exact opposite on the Chun Li piece. Seeing Chunners from that quality reminds me of the original Suikoden US box art, up close, it is fine. I find it entertaining that the artist of the Cammy piece is passing off his flaws as "style" and his critiques as "opinions".

Funny enough, the longer I look at the Chun Li one the better it gets. Mainly because even though the "style" of clothing is similar to normal (legs showing, spiked bracelets, etc.) the look of it and detail is different... a little refreshing to my eyes. Kinda similar to why I always get the alt for Chun Li when I play her in SF4.

As for Cammy and Ryu... they are pretty meh.

Of course it doesn't really matter what I think, cuz all the drawings are 100 times better than anything I would come up with.
