I'm at an impasse. Ideas are in my head and they are doing things that could be considered mildly intelligent, however my hands don't want to take those ideas and transcribe them in to any thing that could be considered quality. So instead you get me rambling on about a bunch of nothing like usual. You're welcome.
I'm usually a huge proponent of musings around here and I still am. However, this weekly musing stuff is leaving me burnt out. I had really wanted to recap EVO for the e sports thing and well...that was last week's topic. It's time to move on to a new topic. It didn't help that EVO was widely covered by everyone with the surge of last years popularity. TWO MILLION viewers on the stream. Incredible. The fact that Dtoid has cut out embeds also kinda kills the highlight moments of the tournament. So, I'll pass up doing that. A crazy good Haku-men winning BlazBlue was awesome though. Just thought I'd throw that out for all those people only paying attention to SSF4AE and MVC3.
We have an East vs West showdown this week, which almost exclusively means RPG wars. I'm sure some really creative blogs analyzing Keiji Inafune's claims of stagnation and more importantly, the rappers that have come out of this terrible war will arise. M-Flo and Ice-T in particular had a terrible past. Me, I have a half written piece on the rise of the Strategy RPGs across both continents starting with Chess and Shogi and progressing until League of Legends and Disgaea 4. So far it's mostly garbage with loose ideas thrown on to paper. I'm feeling unmotivated at the beginning of the 1980s with Computer Bismarck and Utopia and those types. Meh. I'll try to finish, but I've been playing the crap out of my PSP lately. So much so that blogging has become an after thought.
Probably the whole reason I've been in this rut is my arthritis froze my hip up last weekend and pain killers were unfortunately necessary. It has since popped and relieved itself. This pain however led to some serious gaming. I think my eyes are strained from the long plays on the PSP. While I've got a boat load of games, I only really focused on two. I had a post planned about games that really make you feel good when feeling bad and Zettai Hero Project was the whole reason for it. Probably won't post that blog however because I'd have to actually think about games other than ZHP and I really don't play a lot of feel good crap. ZHP is completely about trying to beat the negativity out of the people of the world as you grind your way back to being a Super Hero. I actually got to knock the crap out of the President of the United States for thinking that sacrificing few to save the many was a noble pursuit. After that I punched a nuke in to SPACE. Good times. I also think this is probably one of Disgaea Team's better games. It's a lot more focused than the Disgaea games and it has a simple enough system that is explained in a slow enough matter to actually work. Plus I don't have to toss people around. God I have an unrelenting hate for tossing people in Disgaea games.
The current game I'm burning through is Yggdra Union. I'm really sorry Atlus. That you had to wait for me to play this game on the PSP. It's very good. I suggest running to Gamestop and buying a $15 new copy of Knights in the Nightmare (remember to search for the voucher) just to get the game if you enjoy a good SRPG. It does suffer from "what do you mean I can't kill you yet" syndrome. Bosses won't die without some unknown condition that has to be focused on first. It's stupid, it doesn't detract from anything, but it is stupid. Gameplay in Yggdra Union is super solid and it just keeps expanding on itself. The game initially restricts itself by simplifying the system in to a standard bare bones SRPG. Then it starts adding advantage disadvantage elements similar to Pokemon or Fire Emblem. Then it adds combo pairing. Then it adds special attacks. Then it adds greater emphasis on combo pairing. It's addicting to say the least. Right now however Yggdra just ran off to attack the big bad on her own and got kidnapped. Sure, just run off after the guy that has a special attack called GENOCIDE. Nothing bad will happen. She's been a normal character and almost likable for most the game, but she just toed the line and I seriously can't stand this kind of annoying character twist.
Sorry for breaking the failings of the female protagonist down, but I just think that there are three terrible stereotypes that women in games keep falling in to. Stupid heroine, super heroine and useless heroine syndromes plague the industry. I wish there were a better adjective to place on these, but I think this wording gets the idea across quite clearly. Plus as I've explained before my mind is narrowed right now and my verbiage is breaking down terribly. To actually escape these categories creates normal and natural characters that I have no ill will towards. Characters like Samus before Other M, Jade, and Tali. Decent characters that have confidence and a bit of humility. Well maybe not Samus, but Samus really was a blank slate for a lot of people to turn in to their own character. Stupid heroines are the people that just do really dumb things simply to do them. They do something that just makes you yell at the screen. Yggdra just did that when she decided to leave the party after clearing out her castle to take on a general all by her lonesome. A useless heroine is that girl who does absolutely nothing for anybody and gets rewarded for this. Also known as the Nagisa Furukawa syndrome. It's a huge issue in dating sims as the girl just seems to have a forced push behind her as some thing that I have to take care of. Sorry, I like women that can do things for themselves. This can actually be subverted extremely easily by giving the character a talent and a goal that she can accomplish. However, if nothing appears, it is simply maddening.
A super heroine is the typical western gaming trope. She is the strong powerful female that just happens to be batshit insane in her confidence. There is a certain amount of humility that has to come across all characters. Hubris and whatnot. Men get off easier because easily written characters that follow this trait are common place. It's lazy, but we've come to expect it after centuries of using this style. Thus when we get well written lead male characters, they must be looked on with amazement and a bit of hesitance. Females however don't get this luxury. They've been ancillary characters for the better part of gaming's early years. When they did enter the scene, we expected more out of them. Something smarter. Instead, we got sex appeal. To justify that, men created them as uber confident femme fatales. They then turned in to Super Bitches. Early Lara Croft was definitely one of these. Anybody remember that time she let her Sherpa get eaten by wolves? That's why I've always had a thing against the character. Note, these traits don't exclusively apply to women. Snow from FFVII is definitely a Super Bitch. Most secondary male characters are simply stupid. They also get killed at some point and I'm okay with that. Any guy in a harem anime has to be a useless idiot, at least until the end when he actually mans up for once. However, women seem to aggravate me more because I expect something better out of the characters. Bias I guess you could call that. Blah, I guess I'm done with all this classifying. I just don't like the fact that I finally get a major victory in the game and my nice little Yggdra goes off and does something insane. Let me enjoy my spoils! I just invaded and took over a castle! Why do I have to invade another one? I'm doing some rescue the princess garbage for somebody I've been kicking ass with the entire game.
So I've been watching virtually no anime this season. I started watching Baka to Test thanks to the Dtoid ads and it's a pretty good show. Quality comedic timing, love triangles, the incest driven older sister is a bit much, but the other characters have a nice balance. That's pretty much it and I'm getting tired of waiting for new episodes. I might have to dive in to some shonen garbage to facilitate my anime needs this season as I think I've tapped the well on old shows I can watch. Blah. I need some more harem, triangle, comedy, quality anime or really any combination of the above. Shame there are a few shows that I want to see that aren't streaming and would have to be gotten illicitly if I did intend to watch them. I hope it doesn't come to that as I do enjoy supporting streaming anime services fully.
This week has been a pretty weird week for stuff around me. In a bad way. Wife works retail clothing store and she got looted $3,000 worth of product from 8 or so people doing a snatch and grab. So she had to turn her 8 hour shift in to a 13 hour shift to deal with the cops. Then there was an accident right outside of her store. Paddles were used. That's all we really know. A fugitive was shot 3 blocks away from there a few hours before. A woman killed her 2 kids and attempted (and failed so far) to take her own life a block or so down the street from us. To see that kind of news with a house that looks eerily similar to your own is a bit shocking. My sister's boyfriend got in an accident while they were moving her in. Somebody plowed in to him and totaled their car. He was using a Suburban so they were unscathed. London is burning. This has the least to do with me, but I visited London a lot in my youth and this is pretty sad to see. I hope this all calms down and the people that have exploited this turmoil to do horrible acts have to answer for their crimes. I understand protest, I don't condone vandalism. This has been disgusting.
Elsa got reamed on her blog for absolutely no reason from members of the fighting game community. Clearly not as awful as any of those other events, but I feel like I should expand on it because I plain don't like stupid shit. I've heard people say that she used inaccurate facts, but I read the post a few times and there was not one actual sentence that can be considered factual. There is a LOT of opinion and they all tie back to her preconceived definitions. Those definitions are still opinion. Barack Obama is President of the United States as of the date this post goes live. That is a fact. "Videogames will likely never become as popular as true sports, very simply because they are not a sport -- they are a GAME." This is an opinion. Get your panties out of the twist they are in and stop being a fuckwad. "Gaming is gaming." No matter what, we're all supposed to be having fun. Internet fuckwad theory doesn't apply to people that put their names in their twitter accounts.
For all those that were bothered by the fact that Nintendo did nothing for Samus Aran's 25th this year, here's a couple of other games that have gotten overlooked. Darius, Adventure Island, Dizzy, Athena, Castlevania, Milon's Secret Castle and Bubble Bobble. Bub and Bob are able to rent a car now guys! That's madness! What's not madness is that Texas' Film Board is raising the reimbursement program for game companies in the state. The level is jumping from 5% to 15% and is now at the same level that film is in the state. This will produce an additional 300 jobs from EA Sports in Austin and that's just the start. This is good for the industry. I disagree with a lot of business practices this state does, but supporting arts and entertainment industries can never be a bad thing. Good job Texas. I really don't know how to end this insane rambling, so in the spirit of a government institution recognizing that gaming is on par with film... Fin.

I too am having problems blogging lately... fingers type, but I always get the feeling they're not really saying what I want them to say... I have at least a dozen unfinished blogs that just won't seem to come together. :(
Nicely said about female characters... it would be nice to just see more "normal" female characters in games. Then again it would also be nice to see more normal male characters in games... more normal everything instead of the exaggerations they always seem to give us. :(
Wow... your wife seems to work in a risky neighborhood... how stressful!
The London thing... so sad, especially with the senseless loss of life that is occuring.
My blog... yeah, I have no idea why people picked up on a simple opinion blog done for a "blog of the week" topic and blew it out of proportion. I guess it just goes to show how the internet sometimes works... someone links something and boom... everyone gets in on the act. I did have a bit of a laugh at all the people that called for me to be fired though (and some of the insults were inventive)! I guess the thing that didn't come through in the blog is that I like gaming, I like competitive gaming (mostly doing it, not so much watching it) - I just don't like calling it sports. I don't actually much like sports... and frankly, video gaming is better! But it's just really not that big a deal LOL!
Good on Texas! Canada tends to have good support for game companies, and it shows with increased employment in the field.
Nice random ramblings!!
That's the thing, it's suburubia. Nice calm suburbia. That's what's crazy about the whole thing. She works maybe two miles down the road from the house.
I don't even want "Normal" characters. I just don't want my ladies to be dumb, worthless, or stuck up. You can bring those characters out and make them perfectly legitimate by just changing one or two things. Expand on the dialog and build up the irrational decision. Give her something useful to do. Give her some thing to humble herself. It's poor characterization to just leave them one sided.
I don't want to defend your blog because you are a big girl and you can handle yourself. I'm just totally unable to see where these people are coming from. Maybe Marcus Graham (djWheat) is confused as to what a "fact" is. I don't really know.
Marcus's little stupid tweet and quite a few others following that led to James Rastovich from New Zealand saying something horrible. I believe Aurain posted Marcus's tumbler thing that had some pretty stupid stuff in it as well. I just don't see the grounds of the argument and I'm a huge EVO and competitive gaming supporter.
ZHP and Yggdra Union are both games i've intended to pick up for a while now, but seeing as i'm pretty sure they were never released here for retail i'd need to order them online and all. Of course before that, it'd be nice if my psp would start working again as it has been out of action for a month now. Need to look into it but mostly haven't had a lot of time too. Before it died, i was absolutely being devoured by Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. Easily one of the best strategy RPG's i've ever played and is essential if you like Final Fantasy Tactics. Not sure how well it's sold but now i really want to see some more of the Ogre series.
Also agree with you on the weekly musings thing. Although it's alright for some, it would be nicer to have that extra time to refine and in my case actually maybe get a blog completed in time. I've got a bunch of half completed blogs i've worked on now which i've intended to share with you fine folk but just haven't got it quite to a state that i've been happy with. I'm bound to get one out eventually.
I'm getting Tactics Ogre when I have time to play it. Right now it's 20 on Amazon and that's a steal. Unfortunately, my haul for the PSP was ZHP, Knights in the Nightmare w/Yggdra Union, Disgaea Infinite and a few others. Since ZHP KitN and YU all deserve to be completed, I'm going to stave off really diving in to the PSP collection. Though I probably need to support some Falcom games just to do so.
Also, top down Killzone PSP from Sony's apology program intrigues me. I've only completed the tutorial, but this could be really fun and kind of like an action based Metal Gear Solid. Too many games though, not enough time.
As far as the London thing, it's so sad. The world is going to heel in a handbasket. Meanwhile, Canada just sits there, out of the way, bothering nobody.
I'm not an ambitious guy by any means, but one of my few desires is to move to Canada when I get the chance someday. I'm certian I'll love it there.
As far as characters in games I'd like to see more variety of male characters, as well. Lately it just seems we're given two types - big and burly like in Gears and Duke Nukem, or wimpy like Kaiden in Mass Effect.
At any rate, enjoyed reading your blog. Hope the arthritis settles down for you.
Chin up and stiff upper lip and more genuine ways of saying I'm there for you.
However, I will say I love your new avatar.
It isn't, but I'm okay with that. It's only annoying when flare ups happen. Unfortunately this built up in my hip so that it couldn't really move without pain and I actually had to take off work for that. Most the time it's just sore elbow or achy hands kinda stuff. You know like every grandma has.
I also don't really like to take pain killers. They just make me feel stupid and loopy. They don't really fix anything. They do make me focus on shiny things though and my gaming does improve.
As for Canada, I've heard it's gorgeous up there. Unfortunately I'm a Southerner through and through. You can't really put me in long winters and expect me to survive. We get snowflakes on occasion and we shut schools and businesses down. Imagine what I'd do if a blizzard popped up.
@jaded
I read your comment out loud for her and all I got was her nodding up and down in agreement. There is petty theft in every store and then there is thieves. I feel for you people that have to deal with that as I only work in a small business with minimal real retail. I don't get enough foot traffic to get any real thieves.
About dudes in games, I kinda agree. I've been mostly playing games recently with strong protagonists and ignoring everything else. I loved Gears, but I don't think I'll ever get 2 or 3. I had my fill. I don't think they can really change anything enough to make me deal with a 6 hour campaign of one liners.
@lotd
I'm still waiting for Funktastic to have an aneurysm about trying to figure out everyone's avatars post Shark Week. Mine is Keima Katsuragi from The World God Only Knows. This was the buddha pose he made upon entering super mode so that he could play 10 video games at once. I liked the series and I've always wanted to change my avatar.
I originally thought Mega Man and manasteel was a smart thing, but I don't really want to be looked on as a Mega Man expert. I liked 2. A Lot. I don't know much about anything else in the series. Speaking with people like MegaStryke and WryGuy taught me that I really knew nothing about Mega Man.
So I used Shark Week to finally change my avatar. I wanted that Fez one but it was squished to nothing pretty. C'est la vie.
DO WANT Lego Bub and Bob toys.
Hope you're on the mend, sir. Never had a hip out, but I do have infrequent sciatica, and if they're at all similar, it's not a lot of fun, pain pills or no.
Yeah, but I wish I could actually have separated these ideas in to a full blogs. Instead, they sit as blurbs.
@Zug
Yeah, Sparks was my hero of the event. I'm a terrible Haku-men player and that really showed me some places that I'm doing poorly. That defense was crazy that he was bringing.
Yeah, Sciatia seems like it could get a bit more serious than my stuff. Basically the antibodies just build in the joints and cause them to swell. Most the time you can get it to calm down with anti-inflammatories or just time, but this one just swelled in a bad spot. But like I said, it literally popped. Swelling disappeared within a few hours and so did most of the pain. It's been a week and my hip feels normal. I can now dance again.
@Kaggen
There are load times, but they are minimal. It only loads the change from the home base and the dungeon and at most it takes 10 seconds. You do so much on those places before moving on that it's really quite a minimal wait. I'm on a 3000 so I don't know how it compares on a base model.
I don't actually dislike this blog, I just dislike the style. I'm a content over concept guy so I like to have very long in depth blogs expanding on an idea. To break them down in to little blurbs isn't something I enjoy as I know I can make these better and bring out a great post. However it is a brain dump and it's a really easy way to get things you have on your mind out. Things that you just don't need to expand upon too much.
It's more personal.
The guy's tweet about punching Elsa? Jesus wept, what a silly knee jerk reaction. If you ever needed a text book case of immaturity there it is.
I was watching the EVO stream when that match between the guy and the girl happened. I could not stop staring at that guy's hair. It's just.....wow. I also have to ponder the point of the goatee. What does that add to the look? Also that girl was arguably the most polite Asian I have ever seen which is saying something.
As someone who thrives on random thoughts and musings, keep the faith brother.
An 82 year old man looking at the remains of his 40 year old barber shop. He has no insurance to pay for this damage. I understand protests, I don't understand violence and vandalism.
The wife's car battery died yesterday because Walmart sold us a battery a year ago that runs 670 amp when her car runs at 590. It must have been a typo across the store as they don't even have that SKU in stock anymore and replaced it with the right one. Still dealing with people that don't know anything about cars for 40 minutes is somewhat annoying. Her car runs perfectly now so I guess that's worth it.
About Elsa, I read her counter post which actually got me to read her real post. Nothing really to it and I figured troll backlash is troll backlash. Then somebody linked to Marcus's tweet, I read it and tried to open a line of dialog to the guy. Then for morbid curiosity I clicked on the replies to see where they were going and that one stuck out. That's when this all got stupid.
C. Viper girl was really cute. Had a great personality even if she wasn't top tier. She was constantly smiling and having a lot of fun with her cosplay. He was dark and brooding and I thought this picture represented East vs West fantastically.
Hope you feel better soon - having a laid up hip sounds extremely unpleasent.
I've been sinking time into Tactics Ogre:LUCT and Peace Walker on my PSP. I really like that little system, and I'm still annoyed I missed the SMT:Persona games when the PSN had them on sale. Grrr. Yggdra is also on my list.
I love Atlus games, which leads to some significant wallet thinning. I really enjoy the fact the publish a lot of somewhat odd titles. I hope they continue to do well.
Heroines are tricky - it can be quite difficult to stay on the good side of the fine line between strong and bitchy. It is a double-standard, but a persistent one. I would also put Claire Redfield as a decent herione - I found her not too over-the-top, and quite capable. Trip (from Enslaved) is also one I found quite endearing.
I actually started rewatching some Excel Saga this week. I still really enjoy that show.
I'm trying to get a copy of Riviera, but $ for this hobby is getting a bit much. Though I may go crazy if I get the raise I was promised some time soon.
I've played some of Riviera gba through some not so nice means and I want a real copy as it is my type of game. Visual novel JRPG? I'm drooling at the combination. Now that I have a PSP, I'm getting my hands on one.
Sorry about the Avatar, but I've been dying to change it for awhile. I've never been one to keep his avatar for a long time as my inner voice says "this isn't you!!!" So I finally changed it shark week time and now it's time to move on. Seriously, having it this long has just been maddening.
