My Own Retrospective: 5 Years of Growth

How is everyone doing tonight? Most of you probably don't remember me because my last blog post is from September of 2009 but that is alright. I recommend you don't do what I did and go back to those old posts but this is a sign of growth (hopefully).

For a class in the NYU Game Center we were assigned to make a blog. I could have saved myself the pain of looking back at the terrible writitngs of a teenager by making a Tumblr post but this bagan as a fun project. I started my path as a "writer" here in the Dtoid community blogs, with the hope of being promoted to the main site so it is appropriate that I went back to my roots to discuss how wrong I was with those aspirations.

In those five years I have been to several trade shows for different websites inclusing E3, PAX East and GDC as well as written my fair share of reviews. At the time when I joined the Dtoid community I definitely didn't know I would end up in this spot and that is thanks to these community blogs. There is probably another version of me who joined the community with aspirations to one day write about video games.

However, please don't do what I did. Somethings I have learned from many mentors in this field and other fields is to be honest and truthful when you write. I would write faux-news posts for relatively no reason and only to get noticed by the actual editors of this site. Another basic thing I learned is to not be afraid to discover ideas while writing. I started this blog post reading through my ramblings as a teenager with no intent in mind. Once I read enough (this came really quickly) I formed more ideas about how this platform helped me in ways that aren't directly linked to video games in fact.

I am keeping this short in case anyone in the comments wanted to ask about my experiences and what they can do to be a better writer. I attach a photo of the me working with Polygon during E3 last year. Amazing experience.

Dtoid: Help me start off my Retro-Rollercoaster of Fun

(I use this for relevancy reasons)

So this has been a while hasn't it, Dtoid? Well late with all my work done I get crazy ideas, ideas that could work so I decide to ask your guys to be my starting point. Let me explain my friends.

I am a youngster who when I listen to people on Dtoid or other places talk about retro games I get lost. So to rectify this problem I want to start something I would like to call "Retro-Rollercoaster" (I will do this because now I have free time) which will be me writing a blog by-weekly (bi- or by- don't really know) on a retro game I have never played and I will conical my journey in the blog.

This is where I need/want your help. Either recommend game and I will either take it into account or I will just start at the beginning with Mario. (Before N64 is all fair game) Try to keep the games available on the Virtual Console or any of the other download services.

Sorry this is kind of short but the other ones will have more meat in them.

New WoW race? Maybe. New Wolf WoW race? Sign me up!

So someone who is really into World of Warcraft was looking through the magic of the internet and found the new Halloween masks. Normally I wouldn't care and neither would my friends who all went crazy when they discovered the bottom two masks. Apparently there is this awesome race in the WoW universe that is basically a wolf on two legs, awesome.

This can be taken as a rumor but this seems really likely to be true because of Blizzcon coming up (I will be there) and of what Blizzard has said previously which you can click on the story I saw here which goes into further detail.

I don't play WoW but I have been tempted to play because of the amount of people I know that play. And now that there maybe an awesome f#cking werewolf race that I can play in the game, I am sold. What do you people think, will you now prepare yourself to open up your wallets and pay or still say screw it I will wait for Star Wars TOK?

So you know how awesome this thing is.   read

Late Night Ninja thought: A Response to Jim's question with another question

Today while looking through Dtoid today I noticed Jim’s feature titled “Are games bloggers less trustworthy than 'real' journalists?” and this got me thinking. While I was trying to type a comment for about ten minutes to articulate a response to a question I have, I noticed that I couldn’t in a comment because it is more of a question to the readers than to the writer. So here is my question, why are sites like Kotaku and Dtoid still considered blogs?

If you look at both sites, and sites of similar nature, you notice it is very different than a wordpress or tumblr blog because those sites don’t have staff of editors or features writers. There are about 40,000 registered Dtoiders not mentioning people who just read the site and does a blog by Bob and his friends have that same amount of users, probably not. Dtoid does use a blogging system for posting stories but I see that now more of a style choice than just any normal blog.

A site like Dtoid basically does the same thing as a site like Gamespot but on a smaller scale. The one problem though that I am facing though is what do we call sites like Dtoid because this site does coverage same as “real” journalist sites do but is independent. So is there a middle ground everyone can agree upon or am I being an idiot and no one cares as long as it is good?   read

A clearer version of the Zelda concept art, Also Kingdom Hearts 300something/2 days impressions

I was just looking through my regular sites earlier and noticed the above at Bitmob. And damn it looks mighty sexy, I don't know how I feel about the still adult Link yet because I liked Twilight Princess. Check out the balls out version here.

Now to the real point of posting this blog, through the power of SCIENCE! I got a hold of a copy of the new Kingdom Hearts game on the DS. I have no knowledge of how to read Japanese (I still don't know what convinced me to buy it) so basically it is a Dynasty Warriors game with the furious pushing of the A button. You know you play as the emo version of Sora, Roxas, when he was part of Organization 13 and to me who knows nothing of Japanese it seems like stuff is happening.

The game is mission based, you have one objective which range from kill all enemies to follow behind a character and not be seen (just hit this mission and the mission is sooooooooooooooooo stupid). I am surprised that this game is fully 3 to the D which Square has done before but damn this game looks good for a handheld with the environments almost directly from KH2 (looks worse but it is a DS) and the combat even though it one button looks good.

There is one HUGE problem with this game and the problem is with the multiplayer. WHY DO I HARM MY PARTNER IN CO-OP BUT NOT IN THE ACTUAL GAME?!!!!!!!! Seriously my friend and I start playing the mission mode and cool at first to pick from any member on the Organization but that joy jumps out of the window when every other hit harms my partner. So we have to split the enemies in half but when there is a hall way or they focus on one character it is f@cking stupid because one guy goes in and if any one thinks of going in they are screwed.

The game is good so far after 4 hours but holy crap they have to fix that problem.   read

Ass-assin's Creed 2, reaction rant to Gameinformer

Let me start with some back story, (and no stops) I thought the first Assassin’s Creed was horrible, horrible. I got through most of the game until I just got angry at the game and stopped, so I gave the game a fair shake.

Now that we are done with that, I knew, just like everyone else knew, that there was going to be a sequel to this game. The game sold a boatload of copies and it would be stupid not to make another game, so I became optimistic because there were some reviewers out there in the world who shared my thoughts (Destructoid and the late EGM).

So my copy of Gameinformer arrived in the mail today and I will say the setting and the look of the game got me excited but that is what I thought of the last game and it was horrible, but I started to read. There is one thing that the first Assassin’s Creed should have had, the stupid structure of go to bureau crap is now gone and everything else stinks of the same thing wrong with the last game.

The magazine says that there are 16 unique mission types, I will believe them on that there are 16 types of missions but not all of them will probably be unique. In the magazine (this could be a problem with Gameinformer’s lack of writing skills but this is a reactionary post to the magazine article, I will still buy this game) they explain some of the missions that they saw. I won’t quote in fear of something happening but after they say there are 16 unique missions they explain two missions which come down to following people in a crowd. The only difference is that one is a male running and the other is a female walking.

The game looks effing amazing, there are side by side photos in the magazine of real and game and only one of the photos looks gamey. Speaking of gamey, the thing I hope for when Assassin’s Creed 2 comes out is that it is not as gamey as the original. But this article is not filling me with hope, which is never a good thing.

How Bioshock 2 was on the edge and where it landed.

I am sure most people have seen the footage of Bioshock 2 if they are reading this but if you haven’t go check to CTZ’s post about the footage.

I am a huge fan of Bioshock, so much of a fan that I even love the ending of Bioshock, and the game is in my top ten for greatest games ever. So, like most people, when I heard that there was going to be a sequel(?) to one of my favorite games of all time I got a little afraid.

The team was one knife edge, one side sucking and the other being awesome, since the announcement of Bioshock 2 and news like the Big Sister didn’t help the cause but when I saw that trailer with game footage my attitude change completely. The game is still not getting an easy pass form me, but now I am intrigued at the notion of another cool shooter. That isn’t a knock against the game, the original had awesome combat but from what was shown, in a very very very small amount of footage, this game seems more combat heavy. (this is also what I thought of Bioshock until my mind exploded from the awesome story)

Anyway, my tip for the new team is: go all the way with this game, just because some angry nerd on the internet post several comments about how the sequel isn’t faithful just ignore them like we all should. Look at Resident Evil 5, the game kept the same look and feel while adding new stuff for the player to experience (that seems like a set up for co-op in Bioshock 2, oh crap). So far though the game is going to that next step with the Big Sisters being able to go really fast and your drill being able to mess some guys up, which makes me just jump with joy.

I am not hoping for a Terminator to T2 jump but it won’t be a Jaws to Jaws 2 fall (sorry to those people who liked that film). The developers could still mess with the pie they already have though, but if they take that piece of advice from me (a random person on the internet who went to a professional convention with Awesome Cougars on my badge) maybe they won’t screw up with the pie.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm pie

10 things you don't know about John The Madninjaing Ninja

I am just going to jump right on into this. Also doing this because I haven't made a blog post in a really long time.

10. I am younger than you think I am

I decided to start off my list with the thing that kind of makes me unique as a community member, which is my age. I won't say what my age is exactly and only a few know my real age but if you really want to know you can look for the clues. This doesn't mean I haven't played the NES or systems before my time. I have a lot of older cousins who love to give me their old stuff and the NES was one of them.

9. The first game I remember playing is Pokemon Blue

I said before I had an NES and other games systems before my time and I played games on it but the first game I fully remember playing is Pokemon Blue for the Gameboy. I played the living crap out of this game, over 150 hours, and this game started my love for games. I can remember all of my Pokemons' levels, their moves, and which order I will use them. I would take notes from the TV show and I was consumed by everything Pokemon.

8. Games helped me become one of the smartest kids in my grade

Before I really got into games I was a B average student which isn't bad but for some reason when I started really following games I became an all A student. So whenever a teacher or I hear someone saying games make kids stupid, I just say that I somehow became smarter with games.

7. I love movies just as much as I love games

And let me say, I love games so much but movies are also on my lists of loves. I am the type of guy who actually likes most of the Oscar nominations for best movie. I am the guy who doesn't like some big brainless action movies. I love movies and I am working to become a director after school.

6. I lurked on Dtoid for about a year

So technically I am an old person here because I lurked on Dtoid a couple months after the site started but didn't join for a good amount of time. I don't even know why I joined but something told me joining would be really cool and guess what, I am glad I listened to that voice.

5. I have never played a MMO

And I never will.

4. I am into theater at my school

The reason I am into theater is not because I am bad at sports because I am not like most gamers and I don't have butterfingers (sorry Niero). I am in theater because my school doesn't have a film program so this is the only why I can direct besides doing it on my own time.

3. Most of my friends know the people in Vent, by name

I tell stories to my friends a lot from either my own experiences or from people I know. Vent is in the category of people I know and most of my friends know about Yashoki, Phist, Puppet and other regulars from Vent.

2. I spend more time with games than I do with my friends

This is kind of sad when I think about it and it's not like I am anit-social and don't have friends, it is just that I play games a lot. My friends know that during the winter season they won't see me much because between school and games, I don't have much time.

Finally number 1, I love Destructoid

I love the people here, and everything I do with the community is awesome. From PAX to CES to anything that happens in the future. I love it all, and when I can just hang out with Dtoid members and not talk about games is awesome.

That is my list, ugh this took a long time to write but it is worth it. See you next time guys!

Nintendo, thoughts on todays things also not awesome

After today with all the Nintendo announcements I just had to say something and I was thinking on saying this in a segment on Failcast but I haven’t blogged in a while and I want to say this now. I come home today to read the blogs and new sites to see what happened today. First, I see Punch Out!! and Chad’s overly excited blog, this is before I clicked play on the video, and I do “Hey I like Punch Out!! and I want to see what new things they did with the new game.”

Then I click play and I see the NES game on my screen with new graphics. This made me a little angry, not full anger but slight anger. I like old Punch Out!! but that was on the NES, OVER 20 YEARS AGO! I love Megaman 9 and Bionic Commando but those are small downloads and those weren’t the “huge” announcement everyone was waiting for, it was just a really cool surprise. This is just first looks and I haven’t seen more than you people so no final judgment but I can play the original on my Wii for less than fifty bucks (not to mention that they will put a random piece of plastic for the game).

There is a reason I haven’t played my brown dusted Wii for a long time, it is because there isn’t something that interests me and this doesn’t interest me, unless Nintendo adds some “crazy” new feature to the game that lets me play a different game.

I need to actually move on before this is a wall of text that no one reads so with no introduction Sins & Punishment 2, which if you know me well you would know that the first game is amazing even though I played it last year I loved it. Like one of mine favorite games of last year but this sequel is not what I had in mine for a sequel. It is smart for Nintendo to make this game now but just look at it, the game is about an elementary school kid with a flying backpack fighting evil.

That sounds like a horrible Saturday mourning cartoon in the game that people should be excited for. This brings up a point that Nintendo is a slave of the past and is thinking of ways to do the same things they did 20 years ago in this day and age. Retro people will probably say to this, “But games were so much better back then” I think the exact opposite to this but I don’t think even now is that much better but another thing for another day.

To close I have to say that I am giving these two games and the others announced chances to win me over but these are just my opinions on what everyone saw but I just had ramble on for a bit. The new DS gets me pissed for the same reason people who buy things from Apple get pissed off. That is actually my bad for not reading the signs but I had to play FF4 (darn I am rambling more).

If you disagree with me state why and I will update this blog with feedback and if you agree with me then cooooool.

Madninja AWAY…..

In response with jackal27:

I said that these are initial impressions from what everyone saw but it looks like no effort was made in showing the public something new, something that isn't 20 years old. Also The scope of Sin & Punishment 2 is larger because of the hardware but Nintendo doesn't use any new things to advance the game. The new DS is awesome but it makes me mad because I just bought a new one so that is why I am angry just angry with myself.   read

Prince of Persia gets a stunning E3 trailer and another weird music video trailer

First Madworld with Gears of War then Ubisoft decides, (imagine this in a French funny voice) "Hey, the people like games and people like music. Let's put them together!" But down to the trailer, the art as said before is AMAZING! The art makes me want to buy this game even though I haven't bought any of the other Persia games.

The game looks really promising with its one on one combat which could be awesome if they do it right (most obvious statement in the world). You can take one rumor from this trailer is that, Prince of Persia may have two-player co-op. One person is the awesome looking Prince that is all close range, while the other person is the dumb bitch in the back.

Hope you guys enjoy this trailer just as much as I did.   read

Dawn of War 2 gets an E3 teaser trailer, nerds around the world weep in excitment

The only thing I can say about this video is, Dang! But since they show some new stuff here I will just type that up. Gametrailer's has picked up the latest teaser for Relic's kick ass RTS, Dawn at War 2. The latest teaser shows off the Eldar race and they better be packing heat to take on these explosions and awesomeness.

Relic has stated before (I think I saw this in the cblogs) that they will be have boss fights in Dawn of War 2, which if they keep the squads small like they did in Company of Heroes then then this should be alright. Here is hope to see more of Dawn of War 2 later this week or impressions by the Dtoid team down there.   read

Mega64 Panel of Doom: The story of a generation

In a mystical land of Los Angeles there was a gathering of nerds, geeks and otakus. Most people call this gathering of Neanderthals but to the people inside the gathering call it Anime Expo. I have been going to this event for three years now and yes I am a Weeaboo but I go to this convention for one reason only Mega fucking 64. I did get some awesome shit at the conventions but the panel is always a highlight for me because I have been sitting in the same seat for all of those three years. Even though the number of people going to the panel increases from year to year, the area the convention is at changes each year but I still get the same spot.

Enough about me lets get to the panel, which I wait two and a half hours and I was the front of the line. Everybody could feel the anticipation in the room (that was the size of an airport hanger) waiting for the panel. I knew there was going to be an amazing rave at the beginning of the panel and crazy costumes everywhere and man it was pretty awesome. They all came out with outrageous costumes like every year; Shawn as Assassin’s Greed, Derek as I forgot but he looks like the King of the Lumberjacks but Rocco’s costumes as you saw in the header image of this post he was Time Kid in a diaper.

After the crazy rave party, the crew gets on stage and they start with an introduction video that showed off some old and new videos like Assassin’s Creed video which is funnier with a live audience of people and the new videos which just make fun of people who suggest scenes they should do. I won’t spoil those scenes for you because the act of surprise is the funniest part of their videos. The other videos I will talk about.

The next video is a video of the guys during that took place last year where they had their old costumes from last year Anime Expo and they went around crashing all of these cosplayerz taking pictures and it was amazing. I could spend all these videos but that wouldn’t be funny so I will go over the news that they went over.

First, news for you British folks, Mega64 is airing episodes of Versions 1 and 2 on Skynet. That is right, Mega64 is actually going to air their show that was made for Public Access is actually airing on a actual cable provider. Too bad it is in the UK but it is a start.

Next piece of news and this is pretty awesome. The is going to be a new DVD that is exclusive to the conventions they are going to like Comic Con (which I will be going to) and PAX (which will be kick ass). The DVD will have revolutionary technology like Mega64 Time with its picture frame technology but this is even more mind-blowing. You ready for it, the box has a scent. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! But not any ordinary scent, it smells like freshly baked cinnamon buns. The DVD will include all of the Marcus’ Corners and much much more.

The guys showed more videos, including the second greatest movie in the world The Bookstore which they have shown for the past three years but are still funny each time. Afterwards they had a Q&A but most of the questions were either facepalm worthy or hilarious because they were so bad. The most memorable person to ask a question was a poor little man who was unfortunately dressed up as Lucario from the hit game Pokeman Pearl or Diamond. It was just the fact that this kid look scared shitless but Eric, who is a friend of the crew and was videotaping the whole thing, goes up to the kid and says very loudly “What the hell are you?” I lost it when he said this, everybody lost it when he said that. It was amazing and I hope they put it on some DVD in the future.

The rest of the panel went by, Phist called me fifty times during the panel which was hard to ignore and I had a great time at the panel. I can’t wait to see these guys at Comic Con and PAX and I hope you guys reading this get to see them soon too.

And I know Frank is on Dtoid and just to tell you I was two seats to your right in the front row.   read
