I know this movie came out about 2 weeks ago, but I still don't care. Someone has to say something, I just hope I'm not too late. Before I get into the actual review I just wanted to say I'm surprised Dtoid doesn't have someone that reviews movies for the site. It would be a nice addition, plus it would be nice for people to get an honest review about a movie from like minded people. Until then I guess I will do what i can to fill the void.
Now, on to business. The Spirit was...just ok. There was nothing really redeeming about it, besides a 3.5 second shot of Eva Mendes bare ass, and another exaggerated portrayal of Samuel Jackson, by Samuel Jackson. I say this mainly because most of his roles are just him but exaggerated to one side of the spectrum or the other, but there is nothing wrong with that he is the black Chuck Norris. But aside from these 2 things I wouldn't really recommend this movie.
Fans of the original comic will be turned off by the fact that it really doesn't follow the source material. Originally The Spirit was just a detective, similar to Dick Tracey, who fought his arch nemesis The Octopus. Neither man had any powers they were just regular people, also The Octopus was a master of disguise and the reader never saw his actual face. In the movie both men are immortal and posses super strength, durability and agility. Also you see The Octopus' face, and the only hint of a disguise is his random ass costumes as a samurai with his Pulp Fiction sideburns, and as a nazi. Neither get up makes any sense at all. They just serve as a means to keep the audience in the movie, trying to figure out the reasoning behind them, and to add some comedy to an otherwise lack luster movie.
The movie seemed to just drag it's feet. The real problems with it become noticeable early on. The plot is pretty boring, because it is just lame. The few actions scenes range from mediocre to somewhat interesting. And by few I mean 3. Also the main character is pretty boring. He is flat and somewhat annoying. I really got annoyed with him jabbering on and on about how his city needs him, and how she is his friend, lover, mother, dog, proctologist, blah blah blah. Most of the movie is spent listening to him talk about the city or how The Octopus.
Alright to wrap this up, The Spirit was dead on it's feet. Every now and then there would be a quick pulse of life, that would eventually fade as fast as it came. The cheese level was just to high to make it enjoyable, and if you loved the comic then you will hate this movie. Save yourself the time and money and just wait for The Watchmen. A few months after that The Spirit will be on dvd and bluray. I say wait till then, because with a dvd you can at least freeze the scene of Eva Mendes' ass.
I was pretty excited for this movie; it's really disappointing that it turned out to be so shitty.
At least it's pretty.
It looked nice, but still, not worth 10 bucks.
