Now I must admit one thing, I don't like the videogame industry at all. I used to LOVE playing videogames when I was a child, but well now I must be honest, I don't give a shit.
I mean there is nothing that makes me interested anymore, it's just loads of FPS clones, I used to be a big fan of platforming games, and well the only platforming games we get now are a Mario game ever 5 years.
Where are all the great platforming games that I used to enjoy???
The last game I have played was Super Mario Galaxy, and to be honest there is no other game I am waiting for to come out this year.
I think well the wii could have great beautiful graphics but instead publishers are just putting out a load of casual game shit on it.
I mean seriously,
What the fuck is this??? Namco??? I mean were they on crack? I mean this thing is hideous it has no art direction at all and it's a mario kart clone. I mean people stop being fucking lazy and give real games to the wii, Namco you guys can do great stuff, why are you giving the wii crap?
The funny thing I've noticed is the price games cost to make, I mean I'm sure that they are well wasting money, can you guys believe a XBLA game costs 300 000$ to make??? What the hell, and when some end up hideous. If you guys knew how much Eternity's Child cost to make you would laugh, and well all publishers would probably be after me!
The fact is well ok the videogame industry is making more than the music and movie industry, but it seems to have as much shit as the music industry has. How many piece of shit games are out? Like ninjabread man? Seriously were they doing too many drugs? And how do they even make money off those games? Who buys those?
I mean people can think I'm retarded or stupid for doing a game about the holocaust but guess what guys? At least I'm not showing the war as fucking game, I find WW2 shooters SICK and disgusting, the war is not a fucking game.
I was in the toy-store the other day and there was a rack with about 50, maybe even 60 games for the Wii there and even if you're not very picky, AT most 5 of those were actually worth purchasing... Nintendo should put a stop to this, but allas they seem hell-bent on destroying the gaming-scene...
I say 2 more years of wii-games like this and NONE of the so-called 'CASUAL'-gaming demographic will be using the wii anymore, and they'll prolly never come back... simply because, just like the 'HARDCORE'-player, they'll get tired of shelling our 60$ for a luke-warm ripoff...
if the quality of games on the wii don't improve drastically over the next year ( including a stop on all those crashual-games ), I think a lot of the 'new' gamers will be so put off with the gamingindustry that they'll just think "what the heck, its just the same crap over and over and over again, I'm not spending my money on this!" and get a DVD of the remake of Grease... :-)
I'm not going to fuel your fire by pointing out all the wonderful platform games that have come out over the last 12 months. They don't matter. And I'm not going to be drawn into your "war games" rant. That doesn't matter either. The industry, on the other hand, matters.
Games are better than they were before. They are more expensive to make and publish and yes, there's a hell of a lot of crap out there. Do you honestly think that people go out to deliberately make a crap game? The industry has its money-side and its gaming-side.
The money-side says, hey, if we make a game like this, people will buy it. If they buy it we earn money and are, therefore, successful.
The gaming-side says, hey, I've got this great idea for a game! People will really enjoy it but it'll take a big team a long time to make it right.
Somewhere between the two, games exist. If the industry doesn't make money off a game, they can't make it and survive. If they don't make a game good enough for people to want to buy it, they don't survive. So they play the safe money a lot of the time and, when they manage to get into a position of financial security, every now and again, they try something different. Then we get the Portals, Mario Galaxys and Okamis of this world.
If you're intelligent, you'll know crap when you see it and avoid it. This filtering process rewards the good games. Then people make more good games. The industry sells what the public wants to buy. The industry needs to do this to make money to make more games. If the public buys good games only, the industry will only sell good games.
But seriously, there is a very scary trend with the Wii in that since a lot of third party publishers probably dismissed the Wii at the beginning thinking it was a gimmick and wouldn't sell got sideswiped when it DID sell. I'm sure a lot of these games are afterthoughts or games that may have originally been PS2 titles.
I also hate the abundance of FPS's nowadays. I'm sure some of them are good and there are a small handful I want to try out, but most of them do nothing for me.
Also more people need to show love for 2D games from the industry. There are the fans. We're here, we want them. If I have to play indie games just to get my 2D fix so be it.
As long as there are creative guys like yourself still keeping it alive, I feel like it's not a total bust.
I too feel the games on Wii could be better, but they are already picking up in quality. The problem at the moment is that many larger developers of Wii games seek to by pass Wii for 360 and PS3 (obviously because of the tech that allows more and better options for games).
Nintendo made Wii cheap to develop for (indeed while a little lacking in places, no hd etc), but many of them choose not to bite the bullet bill, think creatively and produce a Wii gem game. They forget quickly that they don't have to use all the Wii's controls.
However, the wind is changing and while its easier to create hardcore games, I think more developers will figure out what they want to do with Wii. Besides, with indie and smaller developers now creating some good product, the big boys had best beware.
This threat is a growing one from Grasshopper, Atlus and others, who work to Wii's strengths and produce solid, worthy games. Us gamers will benefit.
The lack of platformers is because they don't appeal as much now. Platform games were kings in the 8/16bit era, but the transition to 32/64bit made them evolve into something else (think Prince of Persia and other similar games). Have you never asked yourself why you've seen Mario, Sonic and Spyro games constantly, but no sign of Jumping Flash (the platform games sold with PS1) on PS2 or PS3? No doubt a changing market played a part in this, along with Sony building new PS1 IP with more substance.
The dealer will always offer a new hand though, as adventure games were dead in the water, but now are making a comeback. Odin Sphere etc show that some can think in simpler terms of game design, platform/2d game wise. However, as tech advances, 3d games become easier to create.
Vote with your feet and get the best from Wii.
