35% on XBLA?
lucbernard | 1:17 AM on 03.22.2008 30 comments

Apparently you get only 35% on XBLA if you're a indie, from what I was told by many indie teams that are now leaving the XBLA for Wiiware.

And that bigger publishers get more %.

No wonder people are going to Wiiware.

But I'm just wondering, why is Microsoft doing this, it's not like they are poor, I mean doing this to indies. Us indies we are BROKE, and well this isn't helping us make more money, oki well I'm not doing any XBLA games, but I'm just talking for all the other indies out there.

So I mean with Sony offering GREAT deals with the PSN and Nintendo with Wiiware, why are they doing this?

P.S
I hope this isn't true but alot of different developers told me it was 35%

while i know little about this subject, i think the simple reason is "because they could." They had a head start on the competition by a year and they went completely uncontested in the downloadable content department. Now that they're finally being challenged, I'm certain they will begin to offer better deals to stay competitive.

maybe?

Wii are desperate for third party people to create content for their console, so of course they are going to give them a good deal. Also they print money while MS have to earn it.

It's a shame but the way things are :(

It used to be 50% I think, but yes, they are arses about it.

I just want more PSN stuff, they have by far the best platform and model for indie developers it would seem.

Profits I'm assuming.

Here's hoping that indie developers will be able to find some awesome new uses for that Wiimote.

35% is actually pretty fair considering the amount of advertising that is done for the game including press releases and ads all over the XBox dashboard.
Wiiware won't be as successful as you think because many members of the Wii's audience does even go online with the system.

35% is all they give you? Damn. So you get $3.50 for a $10 game? Weak.

Really, where is your proof? You do realize that the majority of people that own a Wii are famiies who are not tech savvy at all. This group is also not very inclined to actively search for an indie developer's projects.

Also, the Virtual Console is a hurdle for an indie developer. Try convincing the average person to buy an indie developed title or a proven Mario title. Wiiware may not be as great as you are hoping it is.

Yeah I read an article about that, it went down from 70% to 35%, which sucks balls for all the developers.
I hope WiiWare turns out good, nintendo seem to be ballsing evrything else up recently.

I remember reading that the 35% figure was only for those being published by Microsoft and that if a different company is publishing it their rate is different but I don't want to be quoted on that...

Microsoft is their name, attrition warfare is their game. They think independent developers and open-source are the devil and they have sworn long ago to destroy them any way they can think of. Didn't the other developers bring up anything about that?

Publish it yourself.

Microsoft takes more of your profit when they publish it for you.

Luce was using the VC to combat you comment onsaying that no one goes online with Wii, which they obviously do. And since the WiiWare will be intergrated into the Wii shop channel, just as VC is, there's a good chance it will get noticed. You don't have to follow a project to buy it. People will be spending $5-10 on a game, not $30-60. People tend to gamble more with smaller amounts.

@Bill

No they don't, the top selling games on XBL are proven things like UNO, TMNT and other old arcade ports, only one "indie" game got a ton of downloads which was Aegis wing and that game was free.

I agree with glove, you guys sorely underestimate Wiiware and its appeal to Nintendo's audience, what do you think the average Wii consumer will go for, a proven title like a Mario game or some unknown title that he's never heard off.

I also echo gamegoblin's sentiment, you don't like XBLA, we get it.

I wonder if part of this is a result of saturation point with XBLA since pretty much all small titles went to that platform for a while. It's been until recently that PSN has had some interested exclusives, and while WiiWare may be a bust as power-glove is suspecting, I wouldn't rule it out entirely yet.

I think it may depend on how Nintendo markets it.

well, Microsoft cant just drop all the games they have on XBLA now, can they? wouldnt that break some sort of contract?

No I'm not bill, they are one and the same, very few "indie" games did well on XBLA(undertow anyone?), so what if its integrated, its the same thing, you're still paying for something unstested.

Way to be a moron kiddo.

Luc, I know what you do, but you need to bring more to the table than just I know people. You need evidence like this. If that figure has not changed much then it is not 1:1 ratio of VC games to the amount of consoles sold, and Nintendo has stated some disappointment with the VC sales earlier on. That is a cause for concern.

On of the reasons you do not see a great deal of third party support for the Wii is the simple fact that your games have to compete with Nintendo for a share of the market. Even on the Wiiware, your game is going up against Dr. Mario and other small Nintendo projects.

Of course, the Wii is going to win the "console war". People will always buy cheap things. But they do not buy cheap thing that they may seem as risky.

You're obviously an idiot. Casual != Hardcore ololololo.

Wii is OBVIOUSLY a very different market to XBLA. Stop generalising.
