I know I know, then what am I doing here? I feel like I have committed a cardinal sin: I don't usually finish games. I play them for a while, and then life always takes over. Some months later, after having experienced new things, having a life (or not), I'll think, "Wasn't I doing something a few months ago? Something fun and exciting and exhilarating and worthwhile?" Then the lightbulb goes dim and I forget about it for a year or more, and another one of my games (or, *gulp,*
consoles) sinks to the bottom of my own personal video game graveyard (which happens to be inhabited by my SNES, Genesis, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360, along with a metric ton of unwanted and abandoned games. (I'm sure Jimmy Hoffa's down there somewhere, too)
The problem isn't that I don't love to play video games, or that I necessarily lose interest. I feel like it's out of my control. Sort of like that show
Dexter--except instead of being a serial killer I'm a serial game non-finisher. Not quite as catchy of a name, but just as lethal.
Final Fantasy? Never finished one. Pokemon? Nope. I'm playing Okami on Wii right now, think that'll get done? And you'd think, after all the time I spent as a kid playing Diablo II that I'd at least see the end. But no. It never happens. The ending cinematic never comes, and it's another dark day in the world of Lucas' life as a video game player.
Now college starts and who has the time? I picked up a DS to try and play a little on the go. The one game I have? GTA: Chinatown Wars. Finished it? If I've finished it my name is Timmy Two-Toes, and I most definitely have all of my digits, thank you.
It's a hard, cold, lonely way to go about playing games. Everything's a passing fantasy, like a hooker but less dangerous and smelly and it wears less lipstick.
Anyone else have my problem? Support groups? I'm thinking Serial Game Non-Finishers Anonymous. Like I said, not catchy, but someone has to do something about it.
Some examples being:
Heavenly Sword
Beyond Good and Evil
Call of Duty 4's single player
Portal
Prince of Persia (the new one or sands of time)
Any old-school brawler like TMNT or Streets of Rage
Silent Hill 2
Another recommendation is to play through on an easier difficulty setting or perhaps use a guide or walkthrough. Making progress in a game is always more rewarding than being stuck at one part. (A lot of games nowadays actually have a scalable difficulty meter that can be changed midplaythrough)
