Excuses developers use for avoiding the Wii
liquidninja | 11:23 AM on 11.08.2008 6 comments

Note: this post comes from a thread I posted on GT

1. Only casual games sell on the Wii: False

A lot of Publishers and Gamers alike think The Conduit and games like it won't sell simply because it's too deep,
and the the wide percentage of people who bought the Wii don't want deep games they only want simple games.

This actually proven false by the sales of Zelda Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3.

(Well Nintendo doesn't think Metroid Prime 3 did so well but in America it sold somewhere in between Bioshock and The Orange Box on XBOX 360. The developers of both games were happy about the sales they received.)

And lets not forget the massive sales of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

2. Only Nintendo games sell on the Wii: False

That's just the lamest and stupid reason imaginable. How many good games come out besides Nintendo games?
Yes, Zack and Wiki and No more Heroes didn't sell well but they wouldn't have sold good on any console. Resident Evil 4 is about the only one and that sold great.

3. The Wii isn't powerful enough: False

If a game like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed can be put on the Wii (Granted with insulting PS2 graphics)
why can't Portal, Bioshock and Bionic Commando work on it too?

4. It's too expensive to develop for the Wii: False

Do I need to explain how retarded that one is?

5. The Wiimote is too hard to program for: I don't care, get to work!

But making a virtual man-sized cube of meat obey the laws of physics is easy?

6. The only reason _________ blank game came out was to show off graphics and physics OK

That's ok then. Feel free to never port that one.

"The Wii isn't powerful enough: False "... but it's not? BioShock with PS2 style graphics, no HD or surround sound? It wouldn't stack up against it's 360/PS3 counterparts and would be a waste of resources imho. Instead of making 1 copy of the game for current gen systems, 2 would have to be made. It's the same reason BioShock didn't come out for the PS2.

I also don't think Devs say the Wiimote is too hard to program for, it's just limiting.

Also, the Wii doesn't exactly have great online support.

There is no reason that the Wii couln't have visuals at least on par with the XBox 360. So far the most graphically impressive games appear to be Smash Bros Brawl and Resident Evil 4. Many games look like they could be on the Nintendo 64. The Miis are delightful but there graphical presentation with the Wii sports pack in sort of set a low standard for everything on the Wii.

I would place most of the blame on the fact that they have a really hard time standing out amongst all the shitware. How do you make Portal sell for the wii without calling it WiiPortal?

For some months now I have been suffering from the "Wii blues"... it feels like the console is already a ghost town, where visitors only stop for a few matches of Smash or Mario Kart races. Love plz?

I thought portal would have been amazing on Wii. It doesn't really require too much graphic fidelity, there's no reason really. Probably just preference, it was also experimental and the 360 user base probably seems less risky for the product.

I certainly to agree though, the excuses are just not cutting it, and are sort of insulting. I think that RE5 should be on the Wii, not Dead Rising, thats a really terrible choice- especially after RE4 sold so well. Graphics may add a bit but people continue to believe that the standard on the Wii is equivalent to its maximum output. Far from.

Also though, I think people do need to realize that yes there is A TON of grabage on the Wii, but thats only because it's sort of a pop culture phenomenon, look past it, there are a lot of good games there (this year isn't looking too great admittedly). The shovelware on the Wii is sort of relative to the amount of 'traditional', but equally bad games on the other consoles.

Let me just take some time here to say something else thats bothering me; Wii versions.

GHWT is doing it right.

Nobody else is. People need to put graphics aside and see that the majority of these 'blockbuster' games on the 360/ps3 can be done on the ps2, and thus better on the Wii. Physics heavy games, maybe...

I am just sort of tired of it, but of course I'm not typically a shooter fan really so...Am I really missing out that much?

The wii has potential. let's just leave it at that for now. Hopefully someone will throw something in for it before the go the way of big mouth billy bass (selling well, but only fucking stupid people that don't really get what's going on in the fish industry having them).
