The "not-so-hidden" PS3 alternate art cover sleeves
larktenchi | 4:40 AM on 03.19.2009 29 comments

Did you ever take notice the art behind the case of your favorite PS3 games?

I did. And on one slow afternoon, I took up all my PS3 games, inspect whatever games I possess that has an alternate cover art behind them, and Reversed them so much as the Alt Art are now my Front covers.

Here's some of them: (all are in Region 1)

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Boring Front Cover

EXCITING Alt Front Cover

Devil May Cry 4

Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction

EXCITING Alt Front Cover

It really looks cool and UNIQUE in my opinion. One of the great thing is, some of these art are some of the original concept art of the said game.

Really looks Cool.

One thing to demand about is that the publishers should make this a standard in all of the newly released games, especially the AAA titles. Fallout 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resident Evil 5 (although it has, but mine's Region 3, and the alt cover's only a japanese version of the front one) are some of the AAA title's that don't have these functionality. Killzone2, beat them to it.

One disadvantage:

There is no Game Name on the side cover. So if you place your games sideways like mine, then you have to remember the sideart of it, rather than looking for the names.

Oh well, the price to pay for art. :)

BTW: if you are going to reverse yours, then take into consideration the front clear plastic cover of your PS3 case, because it is too prone to crimping (and scratches). Always Irritating, when your newly-bought PS3 game already have a deformed front cover plastic.

What do you think?
What other games that you have that also has an alternate cover, and you prefer that one other than front cover?
Do you also reverse your game sleeves in your games collection?
What other games has this sort of alternate cover art (either from different or retro systems) that you remember?

That's really cool. I'm gonna go reverse all my game covers now. Thanks for pointing this out! :)

guys, get the guns, she found the conspiration.

also, are you as stupid as a fuckin table? these weren't made to be the front cover, they are you eye candy for the inside, that's also why there is no name on the side. for christ sake...
RonBurgandy2010's Destructoid Blog
I always liked the inside art, it adds some character to the games. Go check out the PS2 God of War games, they have this too. It's kind of like an Easter egg.

also, one of your dvds is upside down, fix that pronto.
Riegel88's Destructoid Blog
I'm pretty sure Street Fighter IV has one too
Daxelman's Destructoid Blog
It's only a shame that exclusives have this.

I would have loved to see some Fallout 3 inside cover art goodness.
garison's Destructoid Blog
That's really cool. I always liked thec over art as well, but I never thought of reversing them :D Maybe I will do this.

But Daxelman, it's not only exclusives. BioShock also has sweet art on the inside of the cover as well.
Aurain's Destructoid Blog
Needs more Valkyria Chronicles.

Everything about that game is awesome.
Including the inside cover art.
I like it when they do it but I wouldn't reverse them.
It's like a bonus for playing the game.
MrSadistic's Destructoid Blog
For some reason every time I notice the alt cover art, I'm like wowowow I didn't know that!!! Then I forget all about the other games having that option until I randomly decide to turn over the cover again.

"MEE" is just a big fat dummy.

Also, Street Fighter 4 has some awesome inside cover art.
I actually got mine signed by Seth Killian and Yoshinori Ono, and it's this one.

Among some other rad ones for PS3, Collectors Edition, etc.

And yeah I flipped mine over :]
JerinsFury's Destructoid Blog
The only "alternative art" game I have is Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2.

I have to admit, the Killzone 2 alt art is freaking amazing.
Trev's Destructoid Blog
I won' be flipping my covers around, if only because they'll be bent backwards if I do it. It is interesting, though, that most of the inside cover art seems more representative of the game than the outside art, but I'm sure covering it up with all that text would mess it up too.
SephirothX's Destructoid Blog
I really like the Uncharted alt cover.

I wonder what MGS4's is? I'm guessing a barrell and/or box.
CelicaCrazed's Destructoid Blog
But then you'll have boring inside art covers!! :S
larktenchi's Destructoid Blog
Whoa, Nice Input guys!!

but I don't care bout yours Mee.
larktenchi's Destructoid Blog
btw: Mee, no such word as "conspiration", only "conspiracy", finish gradeschool first.

Maybe you're just having a "constipation" lookin at your inside cover arts, try some fiber in your diet.

@ Daxelman:
Yeah, Fallout 3 alt cover art would be awesome, bad they did'nt have one though.

@ Garison:
I forgot about Bioshock!! Yeah, the Little Sister and the Big Daddy Hands! yup, that's cool. :)

@Aurain:
I think Valkyria Chronicles doesn't have one though.

@RAB:That's some pretty cool SF4 Art! Capcom always deliver on the art side, BUT, RE5 doesn't have one on my region (region 3), does the Resident Evil 5 Region 1 has its own alt cover art?

@Sephirothx: I wish MGS4 has one, but sadly no.
I don't know if the promo sleeve, the one with the white Solid Snake at the cover, have one though.

Guys, if you find a way to insert or stick a clean, title marker on the side, just share it.

or maybe if you cut the side title holder, then not reverse it while reversing the front and back covers, that might do the job.

But who am I kidding..

It's just Covers!

Let's just enjoy them and the games themselves!! :)
IceMax's Destructoid Blog
seems that its only really sony and capcom games have these alt covers, and sony/columbia studios blu ray discs also have this.
larktenchi's Destructoid Blog
@ICEMAX:
Yeah, I remember, some of the blu-ray disc covers (like Across The Universe) also have these in their insides.
Primo's Destructoid Blog
That is awesome!
ServantSaber's Destructoid Blog
Yeah I noticed some games had designs on the inside but I never really thought about flipping them around :P

@RonBurgandy2010:
I shat bricks. Checked behind the cover of God of War 1 (that's the only one I have... greatest hits version too) and lo and behold, there's a different design back there! Kinda neat since you wouldn't expect anything to be back there since the actual case is black.
Mushman's Destructoid Blog
Damn, I'm surpried you only found about this recently!! Ever since buying the GTA4 bundle early last year, and Virtua Fighter 5, I've known abut the whole inside art thing. Like you said, it's really cool!! :)
Edarios's Destructoid Blog
this is BS! the back covers of all my games are blank..Is it because i'm Canadian?
larktenchi's Destructoid Blog
@ Servantsaber and Ronburgandy:

I saw the God of War 2 Greatest Hits, and yeah, a Great concept art was at the back of the sleeve. pretty cool.
Puppy Licks's Destructoid Blog
Wow I never realised that, nice one :)

Now look what you've done!
