Metal Gear Solid 4 Wins Best 2008 Game at Gamespot
larktenchi | 2:08 PM on 12.28.2008 20 comments

I just want to congratulate Gamespot in choosing my Game of the Year for 2008

Props to Gamespot on this one.. After the Gerstman Shenanigan, I stopped taking Gamespot that seriously, often finding their adjusted taste a bit out of proportion. But now, I totally Agree to them on this one...

METAL GEAR SOLID 4 WINS GAME OF THE YEAR 2008..

From the Microwave splitscreen, to its perfected controls, outstanding graphics, seamless cutscene-to-gameplay integration, great storytelling, superb fightscenes, MEMORY CARD MOMENT Last Boss Fight (http://www.destructoid.com/the-memory-card-44-solid-vs-liquid-111137.phtml), Metal Gear Solid 4 is hands-down the best game of 2008 in my opinion.

Others chose Left 4 Dead [destructoid!!! WHY A CO-OP GAME AS GAME OF THE YEAR??! There's no "Memory Card" worth writing on that game!! :(] ...

some want Fallout 3 to win (Fallout 3 is a great game no doubt; has great quests, great weapon selection and a very large world to play in)...

almost all chose GTA4 (Which I disagree with, Niko Bellic and Roman are great characters and the game is a big jump from GTA3, but the wonky controls, non-linear play, and not so memorable set pieces [Excluding the bank heist scene, which is Great] does not make it Game of the year for me)...

but Gamespot chose my Game of the year..

Props to them...

Didn't Konami sponsor them a lot this year or am I thinking of something else?

lol @ heretic.

While I can't really argue with their choice, I dunno if it's my personal game of the year. Can't really choose one of those.

@ heretic:

No man, it's still "seamless cutscene-to-gameplay integration".

im tryin to say MGS4's ability to move from cutscene into actual gameplay seamlessly. :)

This is the first time that I saw MGS4 take home GOTY. Great choice gamespot.

@Garison:

Way true...

Gamespot backed it up by giving it best graphics, best boss fight/s, most memorable gaming moment, best PS3 game, best action/adventure, best story, best voice acting.

That say's a lot. Gamespot backed up their 10/10 score nicely.

Not to be contrarian, but I don't understand the hype over MGS. These games have too little gameplay and too much cutscene. Part of the reason I play games is the interactivity. When games start to emphasize the passive over the interactive, I move along. That's not interesting to me.

The farther I've gotten away from completing MGS4 the less I've liked it. Game play wise it was great but that story, yikes. I just get angrier the more I think about it. Who ever came up with that Fox alive line needs to be drug out into the street and shot.

It was great. But definitely not game of the year. I really don't know what I choose for my GOTY. Just finished Dead Space today and...wow. If I really had to choose something I'd say Left 4 Dead.

I loved the game, but I did somwhat dislike how they handled the story and the long, drawn out, overblown cutscenes.

I loved this game. One of my favorite games of all time, but I don't think I'd have given it GOTY. Granted that's coming form the person who sill thinks Odin Sphere deserved GOTY 2007.

i loved everything about it. to bitch about the cut scenes is like saying "but the ocean is too big". it's metal gear fucking solid, of course it has long cut scenes, it's metal gear solid.

Shit, they confused Movie of the Year with GOTY. Silly Gamestop.

By the way, the game was fantastic, just that nanomachines did everything pissed me off.

I don't understand why people keep saying the cutscenes are too long. So you don't like to be entertained, is that it? The cutscenes and the gameplay were perfectly fine the way they were.

Great game, it totally deserves it. Can't wait to see what Kojima is doing next.
