What's In An Intro Movie?
kyrengraves | 9:30 AM on 10.23.2007 7 comments

I find myself watching the opening movie for Persona 3 all the way through every time I turn the game on, and I'm not really sure why. I'm sure most of you have experienced this some time or another. Maybe you like the music, maybe (in the case of action games) the opening movie gets you all hyped up to go kill some zombies, beat the crap out of Xzibit (def jam: fight for ny), whatev. The .Hack//GU series has this effect on me as well. Just that specific combination of imagery and sound that makes the whole experience so f--king EPIC that you have to sit and watch it all the way through, y'know...

Not that anyone'll ever read this, but hell, why not. Here's where y'all come in. What games keep you from hitting start and skipping the before-title-screen movie, and why?

Twilight Princess. I love the wolf howl at the end. PLus the opening theme is brilliant. A little bit of old and a little bit of new.

Smash Bros Melee too, just because it's that damn good.

Shadow of the Colossus, any of the Katamari games (colourful & hypnotic 0_0;) and most of the Zelda games. OoT, WW, LTTP and Link's Awakening stick in my mind best. The 8 bit intro music blasting out of the Gameboy whilst the screen pans up Mount Koholint to the Wind Fish's egg is superb.

Katamari, Ocarina of Time, and Tales of Symphonia. Katamari and OoT because the music is cool, and Tales of Symphonia because it's an awesome animation and that's unfortunately one of the very few anime-style animated cutscenes in the game.

Persona 3, Donkey Kong 64 (DK RAP FTW!!!), Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day

Wild ARMs 3 was one that I'd watch every time I went to continue the game. That, plus the little "party status" credits when you quit the game sort of made it feel like playing episodes each time you went to play.
