Videogame music gets no love stateside.
kyrengraves | 12:47 AM on 10.27.2007 7 comments

...and i'd love to find out why. slightly drunk right now, forgive the typos and rambling.

practically every rpg out right now has its own epic soundtrack. hell, most games in general have epic soundtracks now. but there's one not-that-small problem with this:

no soundtracks released stateside.

sure, if you really wanted it that badly, you could go to GameMusic.com, but everything you buy there's in japanese. what i'd love to see is a soundtrack for shadow of the colossus in english sitting in an FYE somewhere at a reasonable price. but odds are this won't happen, so i'm fucked.

but why is that? there's enough gamers in the states that would love to get their greasy little hands on high-quality music, and not have the case booklet written in moonspeak. hell, there's stateside concerts with a full-on orchestra and everything just for vg music. so why no soundtracks?

i mean, hell, there's even the off-chance that a non-gamer would happen to pick it up, think "man, this music's pretty bitchin'," then go get the game itself. revenue for the publisher of the music, revenue for the game company. it's a double whammy, and it makes no sense for it not to be there.

Check itunes. They have alot of videogame music. They even have music from Mother 3 and that game that wasn't even released here... for some reason?

Because OSV's are dumb and a lot of game music isn't that fun to listen to outside of the game. Arrange albums though, I'm all for. At least sometimes people make their own ones here.

I agree with Wedge. I bought the Okami OST and it just didn't work for me outside the game.

I remember when Nintendo Power was giving the Banjo Kazooie soundtrack away with a subscription. I popped it into my CD player as soon as I got it and tore it out about 2 minutes later. Delightful in the game though.

Man, I felt so jipped when I got the Bioshock CE and found that the "soundtrack" CD was just a couple of remixes. I wanted the actual music from the game dammit.

Can't seem to find a copy of the OST to both Jet Set Radio games and Grimm Fandango. I'd love both of them.

...that is all

I agree. You can get some soundtracks in the states, like Final Fantasy on iTunes (check out the Black Mages) and things like the Halo 3 soundtrack. But where my FF: Crystal Chronicles?
