Fuck Bioshock. There have been way too many Bioshock posts on Destructoid lately. We get the point, it's a good game. It is not, however, the game of the year. Why not? Because of four simple words: Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Remember, Super Smash Brothers Melee was not only the Game of the Year when it came out(okay, so it didn't actually win Game of the Year... but it was the best damn game to come out of 2001, and you know it), it was Game of the GameCube and is still the best fighting game I've ever played. Melee perfected not only a concept, but an entire genre. Nintendo knows how great Melee was, and they also know how not to fuck it up with Brawl. Brawl will take one of the greatest games of all time and improve upon it. So there you have it, the winner of Game of the Year 2007, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and not Bioshock.

^The preceeding was a message about one of the many games still to come this year that could easily be Game of the Year contenders. I chose to focus on this game in particular because it's the one that I'm most excited about, and the one that I believe will be the best game I'll play this year.

What I was trying to say is that Bioshock is being extremely overhyped. People are calling it the best game of 2007 in fucking August. There are many Game of the Year candidates still to come this year, and Nintendo has 3 of the biggest.

There's still Skate.. Halo 3... Assassins Creed... (ok maybe Skate isn't even slightly eligible, but who the fuck knows).

Anyway my point is, at this point, there are a lot of games that could take the cake. It wont necessarily be brawl, and it wont necessarily be Bioshock. WE DONT KNOW YET.

Eternal DarkWing, I want to thank you for semi-proving my point. I was trying to say that Bioshock is being overhyped. I was trying, with only one example, to show that it's too soon to say that Bioshock will be the best game of 2007 when there are a lot of good games that will be coming out, and although Mass Effect will be one of them, I wanted to focus on the game that I think will be game of the year, because I dare you to name one other game that has daily update posts, with new information, on Destructoid.

if any game takes GOTY from Bioshock I'd say it would be Mass Effect or Halo 3 (on hype alone).

The reason people are freaking out about Bioshock is because it is a great game. Not only is it the only good game to come out in the last 3 months, it is one of teh best games to come out in the last year, if not two. I totally agree with you on the fact that there are a lot more games to come out and it is too early to declare Bioshock the GOTY, but Bioshock is damn good.

I'm not conviced Melee was the best game of 2001, just looking at some old lists game that came out that year include:

Final Fantasy 10 (Rikku FTW)
Metal Gear Solid 2
Grand Theft Auto
Ico
Halo
Civilization 3

Honestly I think Bioshock has a better chance at game of the year than Brawl does. Brawl won't win critic awards because they will be in love with a game with a "deep meaniful plot" like bioshock, and it won't win crappy fan voted awards *cough*Gphoria*cough* because Halo 3 will rule the masses just like Gears did this last year.

About 4 hours into Bioshock myself, I can really see it winning GOTY in a lot of places. The last time a game really drew me in like this one was... I guess Okami (which should have swept the GPhoria awards if not for the above-noted jackasses).

But I still want to see Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Mario Galaxy, and sure, Smash Brothers to really dole out the title. But I dunno, I just got the Ice Plasmid and it makes me giddy every time I use it.

I think Bioshock stands a very good shot at being GOTY, but there are a LOT of games still to be released that could very well mushroom stamp it off the pedestal.

i liked playing smash bros for like..........30 mins, then i just put it back in its case and never played it again.....

What's more ridiculous? Bioshock fans playing the game now and calling it GOTY or you calling SSBB GOTY based on zero play time?

They're both (the above viewpoints) retarded... but at least Bioshock can be proven to be at the very least a candidate already.

I already thoroughly enjoy Bioshock...I'm sure I'll equally love SSBB. I'd only nominate one for GOTY right now though. Lets see how much you ride the hype train when December rolls around eh? ;)

Bioshock MAY not get game of the year (though I bet it will), but it almost certainly won't be SSBB. SSBM was fun, but far from a masterpiece.

i want super smash bros.. but the games im really waiting for is Assassins Creed. and im sure 98% of the live people want Halo 3.

it's going to be a tough choice on game of the year.. if freaking madden wins ill off my self.

Brawl will not under any circumstance win game of the year; its being compared up to SMG, Halo 3, Assassins Creed, and BioShock. neither brawl or SMG will get game of the year; simply because of the fact of fanboys. Halo 3 wont either; multiplayer game of the year, but not game of the year period. Assassins creed is bioshocks only contender that i see.
