Mascots That Failed. Volume 5
kwaselow | 3:26 PM on 10.28.2007 17 comments

Since I've started writing this series, I've received a lot of requests for mascots that should be covered in the series. I've promised that every request, as long as it's a mascot that I perceive as failed (sorry, Jazz Jackrabbit, you haven't completely failed yet), I will cover it eventually. This edition is based on a request that I've received from numerous people. Today's Mascot That Failed is none other than...

Bubsy

Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind was a platformer released for Genesis and Super Nintendo in 1993. The game was developed by Accolade (developer of Double Dragons, Turrican, Hardball!, Ballz, and Barkley: Shut Up and Jam!). It spawned 3 sequels: Bubsy In: Fractured Furry Tales, Bubsy II, and Bubsy 3D - Bubsy in the Furbitten Planet. Bubsy could jump, glide... and that's about it for his abilities.

So why did Bubsy fail? Maybe it's because the controls were jerky. Maybe it's because his advertising campaign built him up to be "the next Sonic the Hedgehog," a title he couldn't live up to. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because Furbitten Planet was arguably the worst game, and undoubtedly the worst pun, ever made. If Bubsy were to make a comeback, I'd stay as far away from it as possible, for fear of Super AIDS.

Your thoughts?

I actually acquired a copy of Bubsy on the Snes last week. I've not tried it out yet, waiting to go back home. From what I remember though I enjoyed it as a child.

Super AIDS started after Bubsy bit Gene Simmons and spread the super AIDS.

I actually paid full price for the SNES cart of Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind...back in the day, that same night my friend bought Shadowrun for the SNES, what do you think we played all night long? It wasn't a bad game, but it was seriously strange how you could die and not even know it until you hit the ground...weird.

So did anyone else happen to carch the one-shot Bubsy cartoon special that aired along with The Incredible Crash Test Dummies? Somewhere I have a tape. I'm going to go check Youtube right now.

I remeber that Challenger! Oh and I bought the original Bubsy for the Genesis and remeber all the hype around it. As a little kid I think I enjoyed it but yea he didn't really stick with me much after the game...

Yep, it's on Youtube in four parts, although the audio is out of sync. Just search for "bubsy cartoon." Sounds like Rob Paulsen (Raphael, Yakko, Pinky) doing the voice.

Maybe it's because he wasn't wearing any pants. But that worked for Donald Duck, didn't it?

I'm a proud Michigander, and I appreciate some motherfucking jazz.
