Since I've started writing this series, I've received a lot of requests for mascots that should be covered in the series. I've promised that every request, as long as it's a mascot that I perceive as failed (sorry, Jazz Jackrabbit, you haven't completely failed yet), I will cover it eventually. This edition is based on a request that I've received from numerous people. Today's Mascot That Failed is none other than...
Bubsy
Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind was a platformer released for Genesis and Super Nintendo in 1993. The game was developed by Accolade (developer of Double Dragons, Turrican, Hardball!, Ballz, and Barkley: Shut Up and Jam!). It spawned 3 sequels: Bubsy In: Fractured Furry Tales, Bubsy II, and Bubsy 3D - Bubsy in the Furbitten Planet. Bubsy could jump, glide... and that's about it for his abilities.
So why did Bubsy fail? Maybe it's because the controls were jerky. Maybe it's because his advertising campaign built him up to be "the next Sonic the Hedgehog," a title he couldn't live up to. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because Furbitten Planet was arguably the worst game, and undoubtedly the worst pun, ever made. If Bubsy were to make a comeback, I'd stay as far away from it as possible, for fear of Super AIDS.
