What's your favorite Sniper Rifle?
kitae | 7:37 PM on 03.22.2009 66 comments

Christina from Bioware here! I'm here to pick the brains of Dtoiders -- what's your favorite video game sniper rifle, and why?

One thing I do as a designer at Bioware is create and tune weapons for Mass Effect 2. I thought it would be interesting to ask destructoid members what their favorite video game sniper rifles were, and why they like them. I know what I like but, it's always nice to get other people's perspective! I will read all the responses, and keep them in mind while I'm tuning ME2's weapons.

I'll start with myelf! My own favorite is MSG4's SVD. What I like about the SVD is it's versatility. It's capable of taking out most enemies with a single headshot, but it also has semi-automatic fire and can be effectively fired from the hip. I did the majority of MGS4 with this as my primary weapon. One drawback of this weapon is, it's so versatile it can discourage the use of other weapons. For me I also found that I was missing the tension I feel when I use other sniper rifles, knowing that if I'm jumped by an enemy my weapon won't be effective at short range.

Ok, so please tell me about what sniper rifles you like! Please be sure to include both the video game, the name of the sniper rifle (if there's more than one sniper rifle in that video game), and describe what it is you like about it!

Thanks guys!

Neat question. I'm really fond of Hitman:Blood Money's customizable W2000 rifle. The tiered system of upgrades allows me to change the weapon's setup to handle different situations. It was also a challenge to work up to the better versions. My strategies have to account for early missions where I have a rifle with a poor silencer--the first shot has to count.

I'm looking forward to how ME2 handles the weapon and customization system. Cheers!

I'm partial to the Sniper's in Team Fortress 2, since it's the most balanced with the rest of the game. Otherwise they tend to be a bit broken.

Any sniper rifle from the Hitman series, mainly the Dragunov SVD. As stupid as it sounds, I like the way it looks.

I've grown partial to the first, bolt action sniper rifle you get in RE5.

You have to make your shots count, but when you do... it hits hard.

Also, bolt action anything is awesome

I really couldn't single out a single sniper rifle that I like the BEST... however I will add some input in the fact that I hate when the sniper will move without you because your character isn't holding it steady. I know this is supposed to be realistic but... i tend to ignore them if they work that way when neccesary.

The first sniper rifle you get in Resident Evil 4/5. One thing I would like to see in ME2 is the ability to hold your breath so you can aim the rifle better. The way you did it in Mass Effect 1 was realistic, but unintuitive. Also, no throwing grenades with the BACK button. Thanks for taking an interest in what gamers want.:)

I'd say the Farsight from Perfect Dark 64. It's a total bitch weapon though, what with the auto tracking and shooting through multiple walls, haha.

The railgun from the original Red Faction. Yes the game has a sniper rifle but the railgun is single shot and it has a scope so I think it qualifies as one. I loved that thing more than the farsight.

I'm partial too Halo's human sniper rifle pretty much because it's as unrealistic a sniper rifle as you can get. It is absolutely steady and never loses accuracy, even if you are jumping through the air and spinning around. Also, it encourages aim as one headshot will kill, but anything else takes two shots.

I've probably had more "fun" with this Sniper than any other, simply because it's "fun".

I tend to really like sniper rifles you can zoom in with. I also really like TF2's sniper rifle because the longer you stay in scope the more damage you do. Another one of my favorites is the Resistance Sniper Rifle because you can slow down time.

Gears of war sniper rifle.
That might be because of the sound it makes when you headshot somebody with it, my god its the most satisfying sound ever in a videogame.

I can't decide between those two :

Team Fortress 2- Sniper's Sniper

Seeing a heavy killing 5 guys and proceeding to headshot him , leaving the Medic hopelessly running to cover while being shot from multiple directions or seeing a Sniper and when he sees you you headshot him and scream BOOM is just insaney rewarding , mainly because it's all perfectly balanced and you know that that point was respectedly earned , feel damn good, even more because of the lifeless blood soaked eyes turned corpse it leaves ...

Fallout 3 - Any rifle

Cause the heads go boom .

As rubbish as I am in any game with a sniper weapon, I think bolt-action rifles offer a lot of good feedback. The whole appeal of having a sniper rifle is having a certain level of omnipotence - one shot, one kill. Bolt-action rifles are a reasonable compromise, since in most games a bolt-action rifle "un-zooms" you once the shot is taken, reducing your rate of fire and forcing the player to make his shots count.

My favorite sniper rifles ever are the Dragunov SVD and the bolt-action L96. Bolt action just offers a lot of accuracy, and it's completely bad ass to pull back the bolt after every shot. The Dragunov has two things going for it in my book: really cool looking, incredibly awesome name. I just like snipers in general, honestly. Any game with snipers... Man, I love it.

Tf2's rifle is good for multiplayer, but i dont think it suits a single player game (notably, the charge up, and the perfect accuracy).

Theres two ways to go, in my mind:
a) a semi automatic rifle with a good scope, headshots are fatal to most things (but not the toughest, nastiest baddies), rifle sways a little but when aimed is pretty accurate, has a fair bit of recoil though.

b) A big, bolt action thing; one shot, takes a while to reload, but does massive damage. Would be very accurate, especially if aimed and you are crouched/prone. Kills most things one shot regardless, but leaves you doing nothing while reloading.

Battlefield: Bad Company

It is the most realistic Sniping in any video game ever. The distance gets taken into account for when the bullet hits and I have never seen that in any other game.

Also Call of Duty 4, single player 50 Cal mission.

Where the wind, distance and even the rotation of the earth come into consideration.

Normally I like all sniper rifle designs except maybe fore a slight few. I gotta go with the TF2 sniper rifle though... cause that thing is hilariously ridiculous, huge ass scope and simplistic design. Fun factor wise... GoW (2) sniper, really satisfying headshots.

The sniper from gears due mainly in part to the hugely satisfying headshots, or the first MP sniper rifle in COD4, it felt really powerful. Also, please adjust the sniper waggle in ME2! It was a bit ridiculous in the first one. For me sound and weightiness is 50% of any gun's appeal.

The SV99 from Rainbow Vegas 2 is awesome, just a cool bolt action. I also enjoy all the old bolt action sniper rifles from various WWII games. Springfields, Kar98k's, Mosin Nagants, stuff like that.

It just seems more satisfying knowing that you just have the one bullet and have to take your eye off of the scope to reload. Makes that shot all the more important.

I don't play with sniper rifles that much, but I do like the one from TF2 (like everyone else). The fact that it's a guaranteed kill if the fully-charged shot hits the head on anything that's not invincible...and, it's got a plainly visible dot that gets brighter at full charge, not to mention Sniper has tunnel vision while scoped like in all games. I don't remember if it really bobs or anything, but as I said, I never really used Sniper but maybe once.

The Barrett M82A1 in all it's glory!

It's pure overkill in gun form. It can kill cars, choppers and most light armored APCs. It's a two handed wall puching, insta-killing, death dealing device.

I go in to more details why in this blog post.

I always liked the sniper rifle from Gears, despite the fact it was bolt action. But it always bothered me... it's the year 2009. We've had semi-auto sniper rifles that are lethal up to like 2 miles for years and yet all futuristic videogames don't make any advances in this department. Makes no sense to me. Get on it. Haha.

The Accuracy International L96 Arctic Warfare.

Developed in the UK. And its awesome.

One of the most remarkably rugged, yet for its sturdiness, comparatively light sniper rifle in the world.

This is also featured in Rainbow Six Vegas 2.(steel squirrel took my first choice.:p)

Think about it, that would lead people to become sniper whores. The online would suck, especially gametypes like territories and annex.

spawn camping would be constant.

The COG sniper rifle from Gears of War (1 & 2) is probably my favorite if only because of the satisfying way it impacts the enemy. I love the TF2 sniper rifle but when I hit someone with a sniper rifle, I don't want them to just shrug it off or fall over dead, I want them to get hit hard. And yeah the farsight from Perfect Dark and the rail gun from Red Faction are fun.

Steyer Scout from Counter-Strike pre 1.6. The AWP had more power, but a good player with the Scout could rule a server. The AWP is fun too, but it's not the same. Also, the Druganav SVD is great an all, but I loved the PSG-1 for it's style in MGS, but the best from the MGS series is the tranquilizing awesomness that was The End's Mosin Nagant in MGS3. That gun was just a classic.

Also, bolt actions are more accurate and more reliable, that is why they're still used.

Pefect Dark 64: The Farsight, such a fun gun to use, especially when your buddy screen looks and it's a hectic game of cat and mouse.

Definitely the SR-25 SD from SOCOM 2. It was silenced and fast. No slow reloads. Some might say it was a noobs gun since you can shoot wildly, but it wasn't even about that. It would take at least 5 hits in the body to kill a terrorist with it because it was weak, but to me the rifle was excellent because I could easily take out 3-4 terrorists in about 6 seconds. One head shot to each was all it took. Sticking together was always the opposing teams fatal flaw ;)

The Mosin Nagant from MGS3, cuz of the tranquilizer effect. It fit the game almost (the thing was a bit too loud) perfectly cuz you're supposed to be this stealthy agent, and want to keep the death count low, right? Other than that, the m403 from CoD4 cuz it was the most well balanced of the sniper rifled. Not too powerful, accurate, and didn't have the crazy recoil like some other guns.

I'll probably be the first to acknowledge this, and will be flamed for it, but i really enjoyed the combat sniper rifle from GTA IV. I know that probably doesn't count but I learned to use it well in free mode multiplayer, and had to take into account the distance of the target, direction they were running in and the range of the weapon. It looked decent, plus it had a massive clip (10 rounds) and it was semi automatic. I also enjoy the look of the scope (I'm so totally over the standard crosshairs)

I loved the sniper rifle from Deus Ex; it's weak at the start but upgrade your sniper skill, then add some mods like accuracy, range and clip size and it was great. It suited my style of play too - scout out the area, then pick off lone enemies.

But I loved the sound of the sniper rifle in the first Halo.
