Christina from Bioware here! I'm here to pick the brains of Dtoiders -- what's your favorite video game sniper rifle, and why?
One thing I do as a designer at Bioware is create and tune weapons for Mass Effect 2. I thought it would be interesting to ask destructoid members what their favorite video game sniper rifles were, and why they like them. I know what I like but, it's always nice to get other people's perspective! I will read all the responses, and keep them in mind while I'm tuning ME2's weapons.
I'll start with myelf! My own favorite is MSG4's SVD. What I like about the SVD is it's versatility. It's capable of taking out most enemies with a single headshot, but it also has semi-automatic fire and can be effectively fired from the hip. I did the majority of MGS4 with this as my primary weapon. One drawback of this weapon is, it's so versatile it can discourage the use of other weapons. For me I also found that I was missing the tension I feel when I use other sniper rifles, knowing that if I'm jumped by an enemy my weapon won't be effective at short range.
Ok, so please tell me about what sniper rifles you like! Please be sure to include both the video game, the name of the sniper rifle (if there's more than one sniper rifle in that video game), and describe what it is you like about it!
Thanks guys!
I'm looking forward to how ME2 handles the weapon and customization system. Cheers!
You have to make your shots count, but when you do... it hits hard.
Also, bolt action anything is awesome
Piss off, ya mongrels!
I've probably had more "fun" with this Sniper than any other, simply because it's "fun".
That might be because of the sound it makes when you headshot somebody with it, my god its the most satisfying sound ever in a videogame.
Team Fortress 2- Sniper's Sniper
Seeing a heavy killing 5 guys and proceeding to headshot him , leaving the Medic hopelessly running to cover while being shot from multiple directions or seeing a Sniper and when he sees you you headshot him and scream BOOM is just insaney rewarding , mainly because it's all perfectly balanced and you know that that point was respectedly earned , feel damn good, even more because of the lifeless blood soaked eyes turned corpse it leaves ...
Fallout 3 - Any rifle
Cause the heads go boom .
Slow motion is quite nice when dealing with chimeran hoardes.
Theres two ways to go, in my mind:
a) a semi automatic rifle with a good scope, headshots are fatal to most things (but not the toughest, nastiest baddies), rifle sways a little but when aimed is pretty accurate, has a fair bit of recoil though.
b) A big, bolt action thing; one shot, takes a while to reload, but does massive damage. Would be very accurate, especially if aimed and you are crouched/prone. Kills most things one shot regardless, but leaves you doing nothing while reloading.
It is the most realistic Sniping in any video game ever. The distance gets taken into account for when the bullet hits and I have never seen that in any other game.
Also Call of Duty 4, single player 50 Cal mission.
Where the wind, distance and even the rotation of the earth come into consideration.
It just seems more satisfying knowing that you just have the one bullet and have to take your eye off of the scope to reload. Makes that shot all the more important.
And the Farsight..that thing was bad ass.
It's pure overkill in gun form. It can kill cars, choppers and most light armored APCs. It's a two handed wall puching, insta-killing, death dealing device.
I go in to more details why in this blog post.
Developed in the UK. And its awesome.
One of the most remarkably rugged, yet for its sturdiness, comparatively light sniper rifle in the world.
This is also featured in Rainbow Six Vegas 2.(steel squirrel took my first choice.:p)
That would probaly break the game. :}
Think about it, that would lead people to become sniper whores. The online would suck, especially gametypes like territories and annex.
spawn camping would be constant.
Also, bolt actions are more accurate and more reliable, that is why they're still used.
in the end, a rifle is just a rifle, its the game that determines the effectiveness and power.
Halo: Combat Evolved: The sniper whatever it's called. It was just a blast to use.
Believe it or not, I actually like Halo 3's sniper rifle. Looks good, works well, easy to aim and zoom. An all around solid package.
But I loved the sound of the sniper rifle in the first Halo.
