I am in a predicament.

When the 'next generation' of gaming started, I was positive that I would end up purchasing either a PS3 or a 360; the Playstation seemed a logical progression because my library consisted of predominately Sony games by a large margin. Other contributing factors, such as the then-exclusivity of Final Fantasy (still my favorite franchise), and the Blu-Ray capabilities also led me to that conclusion. My roommate at the time had a 360, so I was getting decent exposure to its positives as well; the streamlined Xbox Live, the achievements, and so on. He has since moved out, and I found myself missing the 360. It seemed I was going to have a big decision on hands as to which next-gen console I would be purchasing.

Sometime last year however, all of that changed when my girlfriend decided to 'get me a Wii,' which really meant giving me a $300 dollar gift certificate to GameStop and telling me to go get it myself. All I could purchase with 300 smackerels was the Wii, which pretty much made the decision for me. Back then I was doing everything in my power to avoid gainful employment, which had its drawbacks - I was without any source of income. Also, I was gravely uninformed back in those days because I did not have the pleasure of reading any hardcore gaming blogs. So I thought that the Wii would be a good idea because it was cheap and its innovations seemed novel at the time.

So here I am now coming up on third quarter 2009, only beginning to realize the errors of my ways. Granted, I own Super Mario Galaxy and Okami and SSMB and Twilight Princess, but four games does not a system make. I have spent upwards of 300 dollars on peripherials alone for the Wii, not to mention VC and WiiWare downloads. Needless to say, I could have saved more than enough money for a maxed out 360 or PS3 rig had this 'Wii-bacle' not happened. I am embarrassed to call myself a gamer when my TV is bedecked only with a Wii and PS2 - the time has come to remedy the situation. I have also come into a good job as a runner for a local law firm, which affords me not only time to blog but a paycheck as well.

And so, to get to the point, its time I truly ascended into the next generation of gaming and finally turn that bastard Nintendo novelty off for awhile. That is where you come in. Which system, a 360 or a PS3, if I can only pick one (I'm not getting rich overnight) should I choose? I love the achievements and profile set-up of XBLA, and it would appear that MS has the best availability of quality games at this time. Yet, as aforementioned, I already have a huge library of PS and PS2 games (as well as a PSP) that would wonderfully compliment a backwards compatible PS3. I love Final Fantasy, but it seems that it will not matter either way now.

PS3 or 360?

Justification for your answer is appreciated, but not necessary; you only have to leave 3 characters as a comment, but please, HELP ME!

The 60gig backward compatible PS3s are getting pretty hard to find, so perhaps get that now, then consider buying a 360 in the future?

If you only plan on having one, I suggest the 360. Because I am a dirty, filthy fanboy.

For one thing, your Wii library should also include:

Metroid Prime 3
No More Heroes
Zack and Wiki

But verily, 7 titles should not a system make, either.

Personally, PS3. I have a 360, and I enjoy it. However, I'm not so much a fan (at least in the last 24hrs) of the looming spectre of RedRing and the replacement/fix curfuffle to inevitably follow. Plus MGS4 looks totally sweet.

PS3

Really you should just take a piece of paper and write down all the games for both systems you want that are out now or within the next 6 months. And then ask yourself what system your friends are playing on if Online is important to you. And also with your new found wealth is a Blu Ray movie player worth it to you or now. Both systems are great so I won't tell you one way or the other.

Like listed below here are some other things to consider.

1.Is PS1/PS2 BC important to you if so you may want to try to get a 60 GB model used for the absolute best in BC.

2.Do you like to browse the bargin bins for games 360 has been out longer so there are more variety of great cheap games though in another year the difference will be non existent.

3. Do you have an HDTV and does does it support multiple resolutions. Some older HDTV's don't work as well with the PS3 cause it lacks a video scaler so you may not get HD on all games for instance some games are only 720p but if your TV only supports 1080i you will get 480p.

Im sure there are more reasons and I think you could probably flip a coin and be happy but I hope this helps a little.

its a win win, both consoles are shaping up nicely. i got a 360 b/c i was an early adopter, i have no regrets...

basically:
do you want to play:
halo
gears of war
alan wake
have friends on live?

get a 360

do you want to play:
ratchet adn clank
uncharted
resistance
have freinds on psn

get a ps3.

if none of those games appeal to you too much, get whichever you can get the better deal on.

Oh, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still a PS3 exclusive. Just saying...
I myself, would buy a PS3. I too, own only a Wii (although i have nine games) and i really wanted to have another console too, even though i really like my Wii. That said, i think that, even if there are few games for the PS3 right now, you will have God Of War, a new Team ICO game, FF, Little Big Planet, possibly a new Kingdom Hearts in a distant future, amon others. The Xbox360 is also filled with good games, but, i don't know, i guess i just like Sony better than Microsoft. I don't know jack about the online stuff, though. I never used online stuff on any of my consoles, cause i don't really enjoy online play.

The only 2 times I've recommended a console on DToid, they went and got the other one. So.. I think everyone above is right, specifically, I agree most with Konchu.

Also, since you already have a PS2, it is "Stackable" if nothing else.

I own both consoles but if im being honest the ps3 is getting more of my time now.

If your talking about library, remember that most games that will come out will be multiplatform.Of the good exclusives, 360 comprises mainly of shooters while i feel ps3s good exclusives are more diverse in genre. Also i would say psn store games are superior to xbla.

Xbox live is the better service however the psn is not far behind on features,if you dont feel you need bells and whistles then psn is perfect and in my experience i find there are less kids, racists and fratboys on the psn (a big reason why i didnt renew my gold account).

As for hardware the ps3 offers more if you like other forms of entertainment. Also the reliability of the PS3 is the other major reason i switched over (two red ring 360s was one too many).

The best advice i can give you is to sell that wii.Its still in high demand and you could probably make the price of a ps3 back.
