Stand Out Moments #1 : Snake Eater
killboy | 4:08 PM on 05.14.2008 6 comments

I've been a long term member of the Dtoid army and have decided to share my favourite gaming moments with all you lucky people. This could be a one off depending on whether I can be arsed doing it again after this one time.

SPOILER WARNING!

The stand out moment i'm gonna tell you about is Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater since i'm playing through all the MGS games in succession and it's still fresh in my mind.

So what am i gonna choose as the stand out moment from a game which i personally believe to be the stand out achievement of the PS2? Quite easily since this moment is the only time i video game has ever brought a lump to my throat. Of course i'm talking about the death of The Boss.

This stands out among all other boss deaths because The Boss and Snake's relationship is very mother and son and the love between two video game characters has never been more pronounced as this. The real emotional moment however is when The Boss hands Snake her gun and asks him to kill her. You expect and cut scene much like sniper wolf's death in MGS1 where snake puts a bullet in her head off screen. This game doesn't let you off that easily though and hands control back to the player with all controls disabled other than the trigger button to put a bullet in The Boss's head.

Then it get's worse. During the ending you find out that The Boss had never defected and it was all part of a (ridiculously over complicated MGS style) plan by the United States to get their hands on the philosophers legacy and her death was a major factor in it's success. This results in The Boss going down in history as the greatest traitor America will ever know and only Snake will ever know the truth. It all ends with snake leaving flowers on a blank military gravestone and shedding a single tear.

It's the saddest ending ever and one the greatest i've ever seen.

So there it is. The first post in yet another Dtoid C-blog that will be lost forever in the Dtoid void and never read by anybody.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

I never got to play MGS3. If backwards compatibility was still available on the PS3 I might buy both.

Good choice, forcing you to pull the trigger was a shattering moment and a work of genius on Kojima's part.

Welcome to the community by the way :)
