What I Would Change About The Sony PS3
kezins | 11:25 PM on 07.30.2009 19 comments

The Sony PS3 is my platform of choice for this generation of video game consoles, yet I find myself complaining about many aspects of it. While I do feel the PS3 is superior to
the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, we're simply still looking at too many problems for a console that has been out for a couple years now.

My primary complaint about the console has to do with the extremely slow download times. Downloads on the PS3 wired or wireless seem to be much slower than what you'll find with the Xbox 360. I have tried everything from relocating access points to upgrading my router, yet nothing seems to work. My final thought on the topic is that Sony needs to upgrade their servers. I'd even pay a monthly fee for better service...

All systems should have backwards compatibility to play PS2 games. If you were fortunate to get your hands on an early system, you are one of the lucky ones. Backwards compatibility should be standard with all consoles these days.

A big complaint I have that many other gamers share is the fact that not all games have trophy support. Fortunately, all current games are required to have trophies, but that doesn't solve the problem with older titles. Developers should be encouraged by Sony to go back and add trophies to their games. This would benefit the gamers by giving them recognition for the games they have played and it would also boost sales of older games. We'll probably never see this happen, but I can always dream.

Finally, I would break system and game updates into smaller downloads. The way things are currently, it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to more than an hour to update a game or the system. The terribly slow process of updating the system is made worse by the fact that you have to keep turning your controller back on to keep it going. This needs to be addressed by Sony.

I could probably rant on more issues, but those are the primary problems I have seen during my time on the PS3. No system is perfect and it does take time to work out all of the bugs. At this point in the game, I expected more changes that what we have seen...

Good post, as PS3 is my system of choice too, on the topic of the slow download times, I really dont know why that happens to so many people, my downloads are lightening fast, once it was going REAL slow, i stopped the download then tried again and ZIP it was fine and i dont even have a super duper fast net connection, also with the backwards compatibility, thats just Sony not being able to afford it, it would make production costs too high because (this may sound biased and egotistical) Sony always focus on putting out the highest of quality and i TOTALLY agree with the older games not having Trophies, games like COD4 and Heavenly Sword should definitely have trophies!

One thing I would change about the PS3: Getting rid of the Playstation Home icon on the XMB bar. Sure, I can uninstall it and just not mess with it (which I already do), but I'd be more comfortable if I could delete the icon altogether, just so I don't have to acknowledge it when I scroll by it to see what my online friends are doing.

I do concur with the slow downloads, that stuff sucks.

Adding backwards compatibility isn't going to make production costs too high.

They just won't be able to easily sell the ancient PS2 hardware for $99 a pop if the PS3 is capable of doing it. Jack Tretton admitted that it wasn't about cost cutting in an interview with a financial paper a couple years ago.

I just got my PS3 and my one big problem is that I can't be signed into my PSN account at the same time my girlfriend is. I guess that's one of the things I took for granted on the 360.

Backwards compatibility, please.
Thank you.

The PS3 is actually my favorite console of this generation, but I have two problems with it:

1. Daedhead8 hit the nail on the head. We need to be able to log into multiple PSN IDs at a time, up to at least 4. Why create Trophies to "compete" with Achievements on the 360 if only one person can earn them at a time?

2. This is related to my other complaint -- If we can connect up to 7 controllers at a time, then how come we can only connect 1 headset at a time?

Nintendo and Sony both did multiplayer sort of wrong this generation -- Nintendo thought people would only be playing with other people in the same room, and Sony figured that each player playing would have his/her own console. Microsoft's the only one that did it completely right, and the 360's hardware is shit. That's irony for you.

A server upgrade would be nice BUT not if I have to pay for it.

As for trophy support for all as nice as that would be I think we can chalk it up.Sonys got enough issues with the future games and convincing devs to use the ps3s full potential to be woorying about past games.

but some good suggestions here.

I agree 100% with the backwards compatability; in fact the lack of it is the only reason I haven't bought a PS3. I have a whole slew of old PS2 games and I don't want to have to switch consoles every time I feel like busting out SOTC or MGS3.

I agree with alot of it.
But Download speeds depend on my connection for me, If I get on the internet before it's been used by one of my brothers, The downloads are lightspeed.

Trophies don't bother me.
All PS3's should have BC. All the ones that DO, should have the Emotion Engine too.
The Dual Sign Ins doesn't bother me either.

Download speed is your own problem, but multiple accounts and PS2 compatability are essential if Sony are to take back their market share.

I didn't even think about how you could only connect one headset at a time. I never actually tried more. Even with all the problems, I still prefer the PS3, but it's good to bitch about things from time to time.

I'm also not sure about download speed being my problem. I have lightning fast internet. Any other device or computer or console in my house is lightning fast. There is something going on with the PS3 connections.. wired or wireless.

Well if anyone else is on the internet or downloading something from a computer while you are trying to dl something on the PS3 obviously it will be slower. I haven't had this problem, well I did, but for somereason after I upgraded my harddrive it seems to go super fast. I'm pretty sure that HD space and download speed are unrelated. Otherwise I do agree with your complaints, because it is an awesome system, but it could be improved upon so much, Sony is just keeping us in the dark or not addressing certain issues.

I would pack in a headset mic in every PS3. It could be a cheap USB one. But the amount of PS3 people without mics is astounding. It totally kills the team aspect games of Battlefield 1943 and Fat Princess.

Good post. I agree 100% about backwards compatibility.

To be honest though, I really couldn't care less about trophy support. It adds nothing to the game experience for me.

No problems over here with downloading speed. I can download 1 gig in 10 minutes and that's wireless.

What you said about older games and no trophies sounds strange to me. I mean they're older games. That isn't Sony's 'fault' the game developers have to add them to their games. Sony can't do anything about it if they don't want to. There are actually quite a few games that have got trophies now. Sure, I wish the PS2 had trophies too.
