About Me
I am a 22 year old recent graduate of The Ohio State University. I have yet to find a job and thus am incredibly poor which is giving me a chance to go through games I haven't finished (which is pretty much every one except Modern Warfare). I have a xbox 360, ps3, and a wii but my xbox gets the majority of the playing time.
Electronics hate me for the most part. I got a laptop the summer before I started college, it broke and had to be repaired twice, then it got stolen. I bought a new laptop and it has also broken twice so far. I am currently on my 7th ipod which no longer receives wifi and will thus be sent it so I will soon be on my 8th ipod. Two of the ipods got stolen the rest broke. The other day I sat down to play my ps3 and the controller wouldn't work, the battery wasn't dead the controller just stopped working. The sad thing is my electronics mean so much to me I take ridiculously good care of them, good enough care that the things ought to last me 20 years.
My favorite game is Modern Warfare, soon to be replaced by Modern Warfare 2. I love sports games but only buy them every 2 years. Thats about it.

Untapped Potential: Indie Games on Consoles
keisal | 4:55 PM on 06.29.2009 9 comments

It is my opinion that Indie Games are the future of gaming. These are the developers that are going to be hired by the big guns in the future to make the games we rush to the store to buy. I think more needs to be done to support Indie Game developers. I programmed a pretty pathetic game this spring and have been trying to figure out XNA. Let me tell you programming a game is hard! And I dont mean the actual programming part I mean trying to come up with an idea and finding sprites and sounds that you are legally allowed to use. What I am saying is that the people who put indie games out there, no matter how bad the game sucks, put a lot of hard work into it.

So I think companies like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo need to do more to help Indie developers get their games out into the world. Its great that Microsoft has developed XNA and created XBL Indie Games but there is still more work to be done. I am sure that there are plenty of great games to be had on XBL Indie Games but I am sure I am not alone in saying that I dont have the time or energy to sift through all the garbage that is on there. For one there should be a seperate tab for applications because for those of us looking for an actual game the apps get in the way. Also there needs to be some kind of user rating system. You can sort the games by best selling but that doesn't really tell you if the game is any good. If there was a user rating system and a method by which to sort the higher rated games that would help tremendously as the good games would actually get noticed and would have more people buying them. In addition Microsoft should make some kind of Indie Game spotlight, similar to gamer spotlight but for an XBL indie game. Just once a week have a new game on there that somebody thought was particularly outstanding or creative or something and say what the game is about. This way the good indie games out there will get more recognition which will likely lead to the developer making more money as we all know they aren't making nearly what they deserve. As for Sony and Nintendo, sure there are indie games on WiiWare and PSN but those are the people that can afford to buy the development kits and thus have likely already had some success as a developer. Sony and Nintendo need to create something similar to XNA to give the up and coming indie developers a chance to shine.

You don't need the SDK to make games for the PS3, especially not 2d games that most indies like. You can run Linux on the PS3 and have access to everything but the GPU, including network which you can't on XNA.

hmmmm? I definately agree, would be nice to see the good stuff from the bad (my main problem with indie games) - although I have a PS3 so none of this is applicable to me.

I really don't see the indie video game developers of today becoming the high-financed, big-name developers of the future. For one thing, most of the innovative and new ideas presented in Indie gaming just wouldn't work in the mainstream. The big publishers just want something that is easy to sell. Sure, there have been a few risk-takers over the years, but for most of them the profits have been below their expectations and considered a failure. XBL, PSN, and WiiWare giving Indie developers a spot to distribute their games is about as good as it will get for them as I see it. Their is no risk to the online services if an Indie game doesn't sell well enough because they still make a profit. Also most of the Indie developers I know wouldn't want to move on from creating a game they put their heart into to some soulless sequel for a FPS like a Halo or Gears of War game. Most of them are content where they are, as bedroom designers and coders working away on something they really care about.

@Narishima I wasn't aware of that. Thanks
@Diverse You may be right but if I was a big name developer I would be looking at the best indie developers when I was looking to hire. You are probably right that the indie developers prefer working on their own projects but with the way the system is now they cant even turn a profit doing that which you need to do if you want to keep developing.

"It is my opinion that Indie Games are the future of gaming"

See the PC, the indie gaming "hotbed" for the last 20-30 years...Those hundreds of thousands of indie titles are not setting the world on fire yet!

"mean trying to come up with an idea and finding sprites and sounds that you are legally allowed to use."

That's because you're supposed to make your own, fire up MS Paint or 3DSMax.

Personally, I've done the indie scene and frankly I find 99.9% of the games to be garbage. Achron is the only indie title in recent memory that I think will end up being a decent title that isn't a pretentious art game, but instead a forward thinking and innovative title.
