360, you're home! wait, you're not the 360 i sent away...

well, it's been 1 1/2 months since my Xbox 360 went kaput on me, but now it's back - well, it's not back, but another came to take its place - and in pretty good shape from what i can tell. oh, and it brought a friend - a 1-month Xbox Live Gold card. not bad.

here's the questions i have - most of which i doubt will ever get answers:

- just what exactly was wrong with my old console?

- what happened to my old console? was it so bad that they had to scrap it?

- is the console they sent me new? refurbished? in the letter they simply called it a "replacement" unit... what the hell does that mean?

- does this "new" (new to me) console have any new hardware inside it to help prevent either the problem that happened to me or the bag of problems that's happening to other 360s out there?

- what does all this mean for my warranty?

i doubt i'll ever find out what was wrong or what happened with my old console - or maybe i'll get an answer, but it'll be vague, like the letter - or if this "new" console has new parts in it... but i do hope to find out if this is a NEW console or a refurbished one. because see, this is what i'm worried about...

what if Microsoft hangs on to people's consoles that they can't fix right away, like mine, and then send me a refurbished one from a guy that had a problem they couldn't fix right away from a few months ago? and in a few months, some other guy is going to get MY old refurbished console... and it's just one whole cycle of refurbished consoles.

the problem is, what if i get a console from a guy that had a problem a few months ago but it turns out his console has yet ANOTHER problem wrong with it, so i'll have to send in the console again in another 6 months! then that console would have been refurbished twice and possibly sent back out AGAIN and somebody's getting a third-hand console!

it just doesn't seem right, but it does seem like good business... and i wouldn't put it past Microsoft.

my only hope is that if they ARE just passing off refurbished consoles to everyone and not scrapping any, that they do a complete and thorough check to make sure EVERYTHING is working, not just fixing the problem that was making it not work and then passing it off.

at any rate, welcome home 360. welcome home.

oh yeah, my new serial number. it starts with a 2 and the console i had before this started with a 3 - i purchased my console a little over 6 months ago, a year after 360 launched.

does anyone know if earlier 360s had serial numbers that started with 1s and 2s? if so, that's more proof that this is probably a refurbished.

To anwer a few of your questions

You can't really tell if you have the new hardware (though I'm pretty sure it should be standard due to the recent warranty upgrade) unless you open your 360 but that will void your warranty.

Your warranty is still in tact. You get 1 year from purchase date for anything that goes wrong and then 2 more years after that if it gets the RRoD. Even if you bought it at launch (like me) the new warranty covers you till at least Nov 22, 2008

If you look above the av port and barcode it will have the assembly date of that xbox pretty clearly, like my launch console was assembled October 26,2005.

It's weird you got a completley different 360, I thought they had said they were going to return original consoles to owners.

When my console RROD'd a few months ago I sent my console in and had the same console back within 2 weeks.

It is refurbished. I *think* it goes like this:
One department gets in the broken 360's and takes your info.
Another department fixes them and ensures they are "like new."
Another department sends them out and adjusts your information with your new serial number and all that good stuff. That way no one bothers the tech guys that fix em and vice versa, as well as no one person has to go through the whole process for just one machine, and can just focus on their specific jobs. That is my theory at least.

I just got mine back last week, same thing, "new" 360. I don't mind though, my original launch unit had a dvd player that sounded like a plane or helicopter was flying right in front of me.

well, looks like i got myself a refurbished. checked the manufacture date on the back (don't know why i didn't see that there before) and it's 10/26/06 - which is probably pretty close to my original console's mfg. date, since i bought it only 2 months later in december.
