A RANT APPROACHES
Many of you are probably already familiar with
this.
Yesterday a friend sent me
this.
Today a blogger friend posted
this.
Growing up with NES, I have many fond memories of the era, so part of me appreciates these
pitch perfect creations. That being said, they're also my personal tipping point of the 8-bit
culture. I've been tolerating 8-bit nostalgia for the past few years, but now I have finally come
to loathe it. The pre-faded t-shirts, belt buckles, cover bands, pop culture references, tattoos,
the Konami code. I'm even guilty of contributing to it myself, with my sketch group having
made a Dr. Wily-related video (which Dtoid was kind enough to post). But I want it all to go away.
I'm not a fan of retro and nostalgia in general. But 8-bit nostalgia especially irritates me
because people tend to treat it like it's some inside joke that only a few get. Like NES wasn't
a cultural phenomenon that FUCKING EVERYONE was aware and has yet to forget. If you
think only "nerds" get your 1-up mushroom t-shirt, you're an idiot. On top of this, it seems like
a lot of people into this kind of stuff pride themselves on these "geeky" interests as though
they're somehow unique and counterculture. I'd guess other interests of people like this
include "fun" and "cool stuff."
I don't want to sound like a complete dick that hates 8-bit because I don't. Nor do I think all
video game-related merch is stupid. But to me, it seems the majority of this current 8-bit
culture is simply co-opting the past rather than celebrating it. I doubt the same dumbass jock
that wears an NES belt buckle would ever be caught dead rocking a shirt with a Saturn logo.
So go ahead and proudly fly your 8-bit flag, just don't define yourself by it. And if you're one
of the ones that do, I have some unrelated bad news you: everybody else loves Pulp Fiction
too.
Well, in all seriousness. If you dont love Pulp Fiction, there's simply something wrong.
Anyways, I agree with you for the most part. I know too many people who simply wear stuff like this because they think they're countering modern culture (though I mind you these are primarily the same idiots who think they are anti-conformist by shopping at hot topic and listening to Green Day). While I do sometimes contribute to the '8-bit culture' (IE: have a 1-up T-Shirt and a Mario shirt) I wear them because I just thought they looked kinda cool... not to be some 8-bit twat who thinks the best era in gaming was in the 80s.
It wasn't till I was towards the end of writing this that I'm currently wearing a Virtua Fighter shirt... But I'm right there with you. My problem's with people who use this stuff to define themselves and like you said, think they're anti-conformist because of it.
i don't wear anything that is sold at hot topic. except squidbillies shirts and other adult swim stuff.
I wear things I like. I like things I wear.
Am I conforming? /wrists
Yep, it's kind of played out. Anything NES related that's new people go crazy for. Enough of the "OMG AWESOME! Nostalgia overload - head asplode."
This needed to be said. Thank you!
it's because now "gamer" is becoming the new alt-mainstream, like emo or goth. or vampire. this is what the people who design urban outfitters' clothing think gamers should be like.
You were cool before everyone else steve. don't worry.
What I find strange is that I am old enough to actually remember the release of the nes, every time I see someone wearing 8-bit merchandise they are always a decade younger then me.
Good post.
I just hate retro games elitists. They're such poop-asses.
Relax...
Take a deep breath...
Now die.
No, I get what you're ranting about here, son... Not every person you see wearing a "retro" 8-bit shirt wears it to look "cool". Many of them, I believe, just like the shirt and are proudly displaying it.
For the most part, people usually wear what they like...
Anyone wearing a cool video game shirt is rad in my book, daddy o!
Is you also hating on chiptunes? Go listen to nullsleep.
Your the one proudly displaying a mariokark display pic, and username.
I have a NES belt buckle... :(
And I am wearing a t shirt with Bowser (paper mario version) on it.
AND I am at work listening to metal covers of 8 bit songs.
Although I get your point though with people only wearing it because it's 'cool' right now I don't wear this stuff to follow a trend or clique, I wear it because frankly I wear my heart on my sleeve when it comes to my gaming roots.
NO ONE LIKES PULP FICTION BUT ME!!!!!!!!
THE BAND AID COVERS UP WHERE THEY TOOK OUT HIS SOUL AND IT IS IN THE BRIEFCASE!!!!!
Dude, you're bitching about the tugboat chiptune remix AND pulp fiction? Get the fuuuuuuuuuudge out! Hypocrite points for rocking the retro gamer t-shirts and avatar.
I like retro games. ANd retro stuff.
People make 8-bit music that references gaming culture, but 8-bit art and music are becoming less and less about the games from which they originate.
Most of the chiptune musicians I know here in New York don't even like video games. To them, a Gameboy is just another kind of musical instrument, and an NES spritesheet is another kind of canvas. It's possible for 8-bit to be a reflection of itself, not just a 'tribute' to videogames.
