Why there will be no mainstream controversy around RE5 and Fat Princess
junglistgamer | 7:50 AM on 07.26.2008 19 comments

I've some people commenting, particularly some editors on podtoid, about the controversy around these games and i believe, although i may be wrong, that Jim Sterling said that he believes the backlash against the above games will be even more severe when the mainstream press gets hold of them. I would like to refute that argument.

Video Game controversies and the media outlets which perpetuate them do so because they push certain buttons, specifically ones relating to the sexualisation of children (hot coffee) or encouraging violence amongst children (manhunt). They use these 'hot button' issues because they are near-universal in their shock value. Maintaining the innocence of children towards sex and violence are values shared by such a huge segment of society to such a high degree, even though they are so hypocritically touted by the same people who do NOTHING to stem the tide of imbuing consumerism in children and sexualising them from an increasingly early age, that the GTA/Manhunt scandals were bound to get extensive coverage.

Racism and sexism however, are not hot button issues in the truest sense. The readership of the Daily Mail, Telegraph and other conservative media sources will inevitably respond to any accusation of racism or sexism whatever the medium in which it is contained with,

"Political correctness has GONE MAD"

It is well within the realm of possibility that organisations with little or no sympathy towards anti-racist or anti-sexist viewpoints will make a huge hypocritical leap from denouncing 'murder simulators' to giving zero coverage to these issues.

Don't get me wrong, i definitely do not think that any serious malice lies behind the design of resident evil 5 and fat princess. Even though i'm willing to accept that some black people might feel uncomfortable with the imagery of RE5, i doubt any serious person would call it outright racist although it may be a little insensitive.

I don't want a backlash against these games, they both look fantastic, but i would rather see a nation up in arms over bigotry and hatred than mindless rabble rousing in the name of 'the children' and i think it's worth commenting that although these issues will be covered extensively in the gaming press, where they can generate alot of interest and probably fuel game sales, the impact on the wider media will probably be minimal.

How does everyone else feel, do you honestly believe Fat Princess and Resident Evil 5 will have repercussions in the mainstream press or will these controversies sink beneath the surface whilst no ones watching? Also, do you agree with my analysis that racism and sexism wouldn't be considered equal to the protection of children from sexual and violent imagery in terms of their emotional weight and media response?

Fat Princess might, only because its very name will ruffle some soccer mom pantie hose.

Resident Evil will not. No one will notice/care that they are in AFRICA hence african americans will happen to be around.

The media are nothing if not "fair-weather." If they find out Jesse Jackson's been playing RE5, they might have a story. I guess it just depends on how things are spinning on any given day...

Nice post, though. Thoughtful, and a nice way to respectfully disagree with a position taken by a staffer.

If any one of those games were high profile games like GTA or Halo with any perceived undercurrents like those being bandied about, the media would have a field day feasting on that.

Somehow I doubt they will even be talked about, let alone noticed.

Good stuff.

It's clear you put some thought into this blog. I like your ideas. I only think a small group of alarmists may try to stir something up about either of these games.

RE5 kills everyone, not just black people. So at the end day, I think it's safe.

And Fat Princess is just a silly game with a funny title.

I don't have a good insight into how the media works, but I do notice they like to attatch themselves to the next big story, so if either one of these games manage to get enough weight behind them, we could be in for some bitchy weather. I've seen shit storms over less (side-boob).

And you have to remember that the media can twist the truth like taffy as long as it gets them some airtime. A couple lies due to lack of information isn't gonna stop anyone nowadays.

Nobody will get fat princess so nobody will raise a stink about it.

Sad but true because it looks fun.

Mass Effect wasn't that much high profile.
Then see what happened.

Flatliner, why would African AMERICANS be in AFRICA?

Political Correctness gone wrong!

I thought it was set in Haiti anyway, which is totally different...

I don't really think there's a story in Fat Princess beyond the title, but RE5 will get some coverage. At best, it will make people talk about boundaries of racism and at worst we'll all get villified as bigots and cast out of society to live in the Canadian arctic without power for the rest of our days. Which is cool, 'cuz I like snow.

if in a game you can kill a black man the black community says it's ''racist'' , but if you kill a 100 000 white guy it's ok. i say that every game were you kill a white, we should say it's racist.

It's set in Africa.
Black people in Africa are just Africans. (assuming they were born there).

No one will really care about RE5 after the initial bullshit storm is played by the media.

@ Falinter

You mean africans. They're in Africa, not America.

they're not black, they're undead zombies. they're not women, they're princesses. people are choosing to be offended, if it had been a fat guy wearing a wifebeater no one would have cared. not one fat chick who got offended got called fat, they just have guilty consciences about themselves and now have some kind of straw to grasp at so they can be known.how do you get offended for being fat? its not a choice someone made, its a choice between twinkies and exercise. i'm offended by the fact at the grocery store the fat chicks waiting in line are more impatient so start eating poptarts before they pay for them. its not a fucking disease or illness.

and you'd think someone offended by being called fat would then have the initiative to exercise. can lead a horse to water but.....you have to dangle a carrot to make it drink.

as a member of the "black community" I would ask that you kindly keep your over-simplified generalizations(stereotypes) and pre-judging(prejudice) to yourself, thanks.

I agree with this post but for the added reason that the original controversy centered around gamer backlash to a comment, not any actual racism in RE5. That comment was aimed at a single trailer and the context(or lack there of) in which is was presented. Now that there are more fleshed out trailers, and more of the plot/characters have been revealed that single trailer has lost significance, as the context is now there. The only place this controvesy will live, is in minds of gamers who won't let it go, and can't wait to say "see, it's not racist!!" ...missing the point entirely.
good post btw

I think the mainstream press won't even blink at these games. The people making the stink are just batshit looney internet morons who want see controversy so they can complain and get attention for it.

That was an incredibly well said response. The last statement definitely rings true about how some fanatical game followers refuse to let things go... but I don't feel like they will be the only ones to stay ignorant on the subject.

As true as the points about RE5 are, the media looking intelligently and objectively at facts is far from the norm. Just as with Mass Effect, I think we will see a radically exaggerated reaction to something taken out of context or not intended.
Those previously mentioned fanatic gamers will most likely create an equally fanatical backlash against the media, drowning out any level-headed voices.

There's always someone out to ruffle features for the sake of the moral high ground. I say don't give them the time of day.

Buy your games and enjoy them.
