I just came across a comment here on dtoid that I come across often almost everywhere I
go. The wording varies slightly, but it's always the same general idea. It goes a little
something like this:
I have all 3 consoles so I'm better than you. You are poor for not having all three
consoles, and the only people who care about sales figures are people who want to
reassure themselves since they cannot afford all 3 consoles. lulz Just buy all 3 consoles and
don't care about 360 vs. PS3 vs. Wii.
No. There are two reasons why this ever popular logic is wrong. First of all, sales
figures and comparing exclusives is just as enjoyable to follow as any other gaming
information, and it's not done for reassurance (all the time). If you care to go into it, seeing
if Sony's bold move of adding Blu Ray and launching at "599 US Dollars" actually paid off in
the face of Microsoft's early launch with less value is just
interesting. That's all.
Watching as Wii dominates the charts because it's doing everything right to appeal to non
gamers while doing many things wrong to hardcore is just as entertaining. The online is
messy, the graphics aren't up to par, many of the games have low quality standards but it's
winning, and the other two guys are running around trying to figure out what the hell it is
they can do to secure second place. Add more casual appeal? Steal the other guy's games?
Develop more in house titles? Add more value to the console and market it as more than
just games? "What the hell should we do!?"
Sorry, but that's fun.
Second, it's not about money. When I hear "just buy all consoles and be done with it"
mentioned during a civilized discussion over which console is the better choice for a person,
it annoys me. I had all three consoles last gen. Guess what? I barely touched my
Gamecube or Xbox. It was mostly about the PS2. Having all the consoles served as more of
a distraction than anything because
who really has the time? I can go buy a PS3
right now, but I know I don't have the time to play it's games, my 360's games, my PSP
and my Wii, and I honestly don't see the point in buying another console if I'm not going to
use it.
So many games have gone multi platform and Microsoft and Sony have both stepped up
their exclusives' quality that for the first time, a customer looking considering one of the
two can pick a console that suits their gaming interests best and not really be missing out
on much. There is simply no settling for less between these two for gamers. That's
something great, especially for the person who is busy with college, work or whatever the
case may be.
So enough with this logic? It may be about the money for some people, but overall, it's a
weak attempt at making a point since it's more about time and what works for the
individual person.
just buy all the consoles and be done with it
duh
Yeah, having all consoles can be a burden cause you never know what to play cause there is so much. What's sucks is getting in late to a console and you have too large of a back catalog to wade through.
All about priorities...I has them and they include zombies and well you know...
Great read. For me, it is about the money(first). I want a PS3. I got a Wii first(then sold it), 360 second and love it, and want a PS3. To be elite? Hardly. I just want to play some games that are exclusive to PS3.
But when I boil it down, it's also because I'm greedy. Will I finish enough games to warrent a PS3 purchase? Probably not. I've got a stack of games for 360 I need to finish. But due to school, an internship, and a wedding, I barely get time to play. When I do, it's usually GH3 or whatever my friends are playing online(Castle Crashers lately, COD4 or Gears often).
Again, good blog.
I got all 3 + all the handhelds, but it's not really because "haha i'm better than j00!". It is because i work in the industry and i try to keep up with everything that comes out in the market, yes even Wii casual games. I know i don't have time to play all my games (i never finished DMC4, Persona 3, Lost Odyssey, Heavenly Sword, etc etc), but atleast i've played them and know what the competition is offering. Having played DMC4 helped alot when comparing one of the games we're making here. Everyone has his priorities i guess :-P.
I own all of the current systems and the only one that I'm disappointed in is the 360... I just got it not long ago because I wanted to play exclusives and it was a damn good deal on the system... I agree that it is a burden at times because you just can't decide what to play but not every system has the games that I want to play so I end up buying the systems that I want... I bought the PS3 first because I love sony... I am their whore even when I'm the center to their soap dropping contest... They just make shit that works... The other systems are purely for games that get 9s and are only on that console so I waited a while for prices to drop because it isn't that important... but 360 has failed to impress me compared to my PS3 so.. I'm hoping I run across some games that make it worth while... I'm in the backlog stage right now, no new games for me on the 360... so we'll see..
all three or you will ah see
360 for teh Haloz and the dignified atmosphere on Live, PS3 for Talladega Nights, and Wii for Felatio Simulator... I mean, Wii Music.
Gotta get all 3 or you're gonna miss out on the killer apps.
I agree Jonnybryce. I run my own business, therefore my gaming time is small. Add that to the huge selection of 360 games and I barely have enough time to play all the good games for one system. I don't touch my wii, but that's a combination of time and game selection. So, even though I could afford the PS3, it has no value for me. I wouldn't have any time to play the games on it, and it would most likely just sit there. That's not to say it's a bad system, because it's a great system, just no value for me.
Waaahh!! I don't want to own all the consoles!! Then don't bro. But it's still retarded going over sales figures of the consoles.
I own all and the only allegiance I have is my own, not some company that could give two shits about you. Also I miss out on no exclusives.
Your reasons for not owning them if it's not money are lame. Time I can see. Quality? All of the consoles have their fair share of quality as well as issues.
"Your reasons for not owning them if it's not money are lame."
"Time I can see."
So we agree my reasonS aren't lame.
"Quality? All of the consoles have their fair share of quality as well as issues."
If you read my post, you'd understand I said PS3 and 360 have both gotten so high in quality for their exclusives, and when you factor that in with more games than ever being multiplatform, you no longer need to own all the consoles to get QUALITY. It makes perfect sense, you just didn't read my post.
If you're not going to read more than the headline, then don't comment please.
I read your post Jonny. I can read. It's not an exclusivity that only you posses.
I'm a gamer. I love games. I won't miss games because they are on a rival platform I don't own. Little Big Planet I wont miss. Gears Of War 2 and Fable2 I won't miss, the next Zelda I wont miss.
a customer looking considering one of the
two can pick a console that suits their gaming interests best and not really be missing out
on much. (Love the way you dismiss the Wii BTW.)
I find people who can't or don't play a fantastic game easy to dismiss and say something moronic like they are not missing much.
And yes the reasonS ASIDE from Time and money are lame.
I had all three consoles last gen.
Yes, that right there is a certainty that it will happen again isn't it? Last gen and this gen are the same.Confirmed.
sales figures and comparing exclusives is just as enjoyable to follow as any other gaming
information...
Eh... NO. It isn't. I would rather enjoy a good preview or review or a game related blog ASIDE from comparing sales figures and exclusives. That's fanboy fodder there unless you work for said companies and have a personal stake that is.
You wrote a nice blog. I just didn't agree with it. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings there Jonny. Learn to toughen your skin. Trust me, I know all about that.
Not owning specific consoles is no major issue; they're merely venues to enjoy games and/or other media formats. Missing exclusives may be an issue to many people, but there really aren't that many earth-shattering games that should cause anyone to lose sleep.
People should just buy the console their favorite games are on or coming to unless they truly care enough to play the exclusives on both sides.
Following sales figures can affect the avid gamer in being able to somewhat (vaguely) predict future production platforms, but the typical comments (defense and/or admiration) over the companies are completely misguided and retarded.
I have varying degrees of contempt for all of the system manufacturers as well as the publisher-induced monetization of the entire media.
My praise is saved for the games themselves.
I want a Wii and a PS3, because there are so many games on the Wii I want to play, and I quit Xbox Live, and my PC and workin' it.
So yeah, I want all three. Four if somehow I get the money to buy a new PC. Like my dad's laptop.
Least this thing can run Half Life 2.
Looking at October I'm kind of glad I only own a PS3, but even with that I won't have time to play everything I want when it comes out. I still play games for all my old systems as well, so it's not like I ever run out of games to play either.
