About Me
Mitchell

He likes games

A-lot

Nearly as much as Shiggy is goofy

He goes to QANTM College, studying Interactive Entertainment (majoring in Games Programming)

It is clearly evident he is a ladies man

He works at an arcade

He loves Nine Inch Nails. Just don't speak of Mr. Reznor negatively around him

He also buys an abnormal amount of CD's, considering the trend in consumer activity these days

He has a Wii but has no reason to play it. He has a Xbox 360 and a souped-up PC too. He wants a 3DO for a projectile to lob at Brett Ratner's head (I still haven't gotten over the horror that was X-Men 3). A PS3 would be nice too.

He loves fondoo, what ever that is

I think this lacks any real HUMOUR!! Well, that's because I drank too much of Aunt Esmerelda's Gore Vidal Tonic, so it is having me reciting 19th agriculture methods in a high-pitched tone that even makes Fran Dresher want to jump out of Sears Tower with a noose around her frail neck.

Ahh, Australia. The Lucky Country. We seem to have the best beaches, cities, animals and obnoxious personalities. However, we aren't lucky with every thing...

Especially when it comes to games.

Sure, we're the annoying niece of the world that has a knack of getting every important people's attention, so we can't have everything that the States, Japan and Europe get with games (fuck, they develop them all, what have Australia contributed? Wow, Fury and a ton of shitty platformers, bravo!) But, lately, we've been gaining from the plight of America's doomed economy.

Yet, we still pay the same old Australian price for games.

Now, this is bullshit. The last time I checked (yesterday, actually), our dollar bought 0.9205 American, yet we are still getting charged up to $AU120 for a brand new game. Ok, so the GST and the rest of Costello's legion of taxes that have plagued Australians for the past 12 years contribute to the higher price. But, that is a small percentage.

The point is: WE ARE PAYING DOUBLE OF WHAT WE SHOULD BE ENTITLED TO! Some might say "Oh, Mitch, stop being a bitch and import like every rad dude like me!". Sure, that's fine for the 2 people who own a PlayStation 3 for more than a cheap Blu Ray DVD player. But what about those who own Xbox 360s? Not every game released is region free, so people are not going to risk buying a game from Europe or the US to find that it doesn't work on their Australian 360.

Then there is Nintendo. Yes, the DS is region-free, but most people who have a DS don't know that. Paying $AU70 retail for a new DS game is a rip and a half, not to mention a pain in this day and age of portability symbolised by the iPod. The Wii is the biggest pain for budget. For a console being marketed as "the el cheapo choice", they sure like to exploit consumers with the outdated game prices, absurd game delays and the criminal (yes, CRIMINAL) region-locking. Oh, and there's the expense of getting 3 extra controllers with all their add ons (and the WiiFit mat and the WiiZapper aren't even out yet!)

I am aware that the avid gaming community is very alert (and furious) about Nintendo's neglect. However, it's not just them, it is everyone. However, I doubt we'll be seeing a gaming equivalent of actions taken by the likes of Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead. I just hope that I can make the international community (especially those Canadians! I hear you guys are in a similar position, and your dollar is STRONGER than the greenback!). No wonder people steal games.

True about region locking being illegal, it's why the ACCC won't ban mod chipping.

And yes the price thing is a bitch but I am yet to buy a DS game from a store, all imported on the cheap.

With a population of 20 million, give or take, (which is the equivalent of New York State and an average Japanese suburb) there is nothing to be done about it.

Yeah, I know. The sodomy continues...

Heck, most of my mates have bought R4 cards for their DS's. Though, they did that out of convenience rather than protest.

I've been very anti-piracy since I became aware of the developing lifestyle (yeah, I chipped my PSX, but so did everyone and their Aunties). However, I dunno what to think about paying 120 bucks on a game that is ideally worth 10.

Wow...when I was down in Melbourne last year I got Oblivion for like $60-70 AUD (This was when the exchange rate was about .75 per US $) Has shit always been that expensive or have prices spiked dramatically in the last year?

No, it's always been like that. Actually, it was worse in the 16-Bit era. I heard of SF2 on the SNES being $AU200, though don't quote me on it. I can have a fuzzy memory...

Being a avid gamer, i spend a lot on games. For the good ones i don't mind spending that little bit extra (i.e. Mass Effect, Halo 3, Bioshock).

The major problem is just the sheer amount of crap out there and its still $100 or more. WHO THE HELL WANTS TO PAY $100 FOR JUICED 2. (perhaps the morons who bought juiced 1?)
I mean come on, the latest EA game (also known as a patch) is not worth $100, and I'm sure as hell the shipping costs don't account for that extra $40 were being charged?
Perhaps the Chains of games retailers are to blame, just looking at American pricing and adding another 80% just for the hell of it.

What ever happened to the good 'ol independent retailer who treated customers well, gave them games cheaper, and didn't run a business on trade ins?

Well, there's always the Gamesmen in Wollongong, or e2Games in Moonee Ponds...

Wait a minute, .skate isn't a patch!

One thing I forgot to mention in my post was that around 50% of games that are on Australian shelves are MADE IN AUSTRALIA!! That does not make sense...

However, Wii games are not

And buying online is a joke. I've yet to see a decent online Australian gaming store. When I was living in the UK Play.com was brilliant; pre-order and you'd get the game with a big discount anyway and there was also free delivery. There's nothing like that in Australian. (if there is, point me there and quick).

Plus the exchange rate is almost equal to the US dollar, so why do we still have to pay so much. Over $100 is too much for me to swallow, even for a good game.

It certainly sucks. I'm amazed the ACCC or someone hasn't gotten on the case. I suppose games aren't as important as the price of petrol.

Spectreworld is apparently O.K for buying games online, but my friend ended up waiting nearly 4 or 5 months for his wii to arrive so I've avoided them.

@ Ali D:

I used to think GameHead.com.au was good, until I preordered BioShock off them. I was expecting my Collector's Edition to arrive on the day of its release, but I had to wait a friggen WEEK to play the bastard. On top of that, they made out I was paying cheaper for it, but I ended up paying pretty much retail price for a slow delivery. Not to mention, EB had this $20 off deal for it when you preordered, but that I overlooked...

But yeah, online shopping in Australia is a joke, unless it is eBay. Now that's where you get some good stuff!

I doesn't help that the websites for some stores are appalling. JB Hi-Fi only seem to have half a dozen games available to pre-order and GAME's website is abominable. Their website is poorly laid out and has fuck all on it. Trying to find out if Puzzle Quest is coming out on the DS at all in Australia is like trying to find the Lost City of Atlantis.
