I think you may be partially right that the game was to push some gamers from a DS to a 3DS. My 7 year old niece absolutely adores Mario and I bought her a DS a few years ago... and I know she really wanted this game (but her Mom doesn't really want her having a 3DS). She may eventually get a 3DS as the game library of games she really, really, really wants to play grows.. though the 3D function will likely end up being turned off.
She absolutely loves Mario games and at her age I don't think she can really tell a good game from a bad game, and the reality is that almost all the Mario games are pretty good.
Anyway, I'm rambling... but I think you're right that it was quickly made to push the 3DS, and it probably worked to some extent!

A "mediocre" Mario game is still worlds better than a great Sonic game, so what does that really tell you? Mario occasionally fails to reach the high bar he sets for himself. I think you're just being a tad dramatic about this.
The fact Mario is still able to top himself from time to time is rather staggering, but it's unreasonable to expect bigger and better each time out, 3D Land was Nintendo's attempted to attract the 2D fans to a game with 3D sensibilities. NSMB is insanely more popular in Japan, yet westerners like Galaxy 2 more. Obviously they can keep making games for both, but I think they're striving to find that formula that wins both over.

Personally, I have to very much disagree with your Mario > Sonic always statement. In my honest opinion, Sonic Colours > Super Mario Galaxy, and Sonic Generations > Super Mario 3D Land. Yes, the hedgehog has a shaky foundation and has fallen at many hurdles, but there is life in that franchise yet, and whilst I enojy the odd Mario game, I don't think Miyamoto and co should rest on their laurels and previous successes.

Although I disagree with most of your points, I still agree that the game was disappointing. I liked it, but like you said it was too easy. It was hard to enjoy the game when it was such a cake walk.
I enjoyed 3D Land. :/
It's cool if you don't like, but jeez dude, making assumptions about the people that enjoy the game is just silly. I could say "people who enjoy Sonic games are idiots because I saw that Sonic fan complain about his eye color." I'd elaborate on why I like 3D Land, but I'm a bit pressed for time at the moment. Besides, it'd probably have to be a blog post to avoid leaving a huge comment.

I'm sorry. I believe your correct in that it does appear I judge anyone who likes this game as moronic. This couldn't be further from the truth. "To each his own" has always been my philosophy. For example, Despite a lot of people's criticism, I enjoy the latest Call of Duty games. My opinion on people who enjoy SM3DL is not one of judgement and idiocy, but rather slight disbelief and maybe envy. I wish I could have enjoyed it. After all, I spent thirty notes on the damn thing, so I was at least expecting something pretty decent. I was just thoroughly disappointed.

Ah, okay then. Sorry if I myself came across as judgmental. There are some fair points in here about the game itself though. I'll gather my own thoughts on 3D Land and make a thorough response to this. :)
