How NOT to Design a Game: Sonic 3
jdub28 | 11:26 AM on 03.27.2008 25 comments

I have a confession. I never beat Sonic 3 all the wasy through. I have beaten Sonic and Knuckles and just about every other Sonic game ever released, but in Sonic 3 there is this one part in Carnival Night Zone: Act 2...

When you get to the barrel thing in the picture, you are suppost to push up and down rythmically. It only took me 13 YEARS TO FIGURE IT OUT!!!! Instead of making it look like an elevator or putting an up and down sign on it, it looks like a drum and (like everything else in the game) you should just jump or spin dash it.

Well yesterday I finally decided to play Sonic 3 all the way through. When I got to Carnival Night Zone I made it pass the stupid barrel BUT then I got stuck in the wall. I thought maybe it was a glitch from the NOT emulator so I reset and stzarted again. The same thing happened in a diffrent spot. Twice in a row I got stuck in a wall and after 13 years I still havent played Icecap Zone. I thought maybe the fault was on my end. Maybe I was going the wrong way or something so I looked online for a scan of the manual.

I found out that the GLITCH is actually a FEATURE:

look at that last little part. Instead of actually fixing the glitch they just warned you that it might happen.

Im never playing Sonic 3 again.

LOL I DID THE SAME THING. I would always to to time the jumps right to make it go down but it would never work. My woman figured it out before me lol.

WOW. That's hardcore. If you get stuck, reset your game?

Fuck that.

Wow, I hope that Sega fired that evil "Robotnik" for creating so many diabolical traps in the later Sonic games. The 260/PS3 one seemed to be a permanent diabolical trap.

I beat it... I know what you mean though. I got stuck in that level because of the same shit as a kid, but I DIDN'T use a NOT emulator to save my state throughout the majority of that level.

Oh wait, got my level layout confused.
The other path is just with Knuckles...

Anyway, where the hell are you getting stuck?
The only bug I got was playing in super form and die in a certain corner at full speed.

Ubisoft shoulda had a similar disclaimer on the PS3 version of RSV2.

"If you can't connect to a multiplayer game, the terrorists have won. Reset."

First off, Sonic 3 is one of the greatest games ever made.

Secondly, to this day I have never used the up/down to get past that part, I always jump. It is possible to do it while jumping if you get enough momentum going you can spin dash under it. It also helps to have someone play as Tails and get a rhythm going.

Getting past that part for the first time as a kid was insane.

I too took years to find out pressing up/down got you through far quicker.
@Scape Sonic 3 and the rest of the Mega Drive / Genesis Sonic are indeed amongst the greatest games ever, like many of the games I love, I love them for the music and have started figuring out how to play them on guitar.

Yeah, I got stuck on that part too. (I hulked out a couple of times as well)
But I beat it and then I beat Sonic & Knuckles then Sonic 3 & Knuckles never got the cool ending either.

Don't remember that part, but I didn't have any problems beating Sonic 3. Maybe my SUPER OLD SCHOOL STRATEGY GUIDE HELPED.

I remember doing that way back when. Anywho, what do you expect really? Sonic 3 was an unfinished game in reality, Sonic and Knuckles + Sonic 3 is how it was meant to be from the beginning but do to time and cartridge constraints they were unable to pull it off.

FUCK THAT LEVEL! It tormented me as a child. Even today it takes me many, many tries to get past that obstacle.

You know that you just need to stand on it a press up and down when the time is right.

@Trevor: That story goes multiple ways, other sources state that the game was divided just to make more cash, because of its length.

SONIC DEFENCE FORCE DEPLOY

Sonic 3 is one of my all time favourite games (like no. 2 or 3-ish), and yes I admit this particular section of the game did suck at first. But as even as a 10-year-old kid it took me all of two minutes to figure out. I mean, I wanted it to go down so I pressed down. Wasn't hard. Down button for down, up button for up.

In regards to the reset thing, that mostly happened on this Carnival Zone level... you could get stuck in the walls because these barrel things you're having trouble with can push you up into them while you're jumping off them... i read the manual when it happened to me and saw i had to reset the game. At least the Sonic Team knew how to creatively cover their fuck ups back then, now they just release a game and expect us to deal with it.
