Could an EA Console be Succesful?

As much as many of you hate EA, they are without a doubt a dominant force in the videogame industry and the quality of their products seems to be on the upswing. Their yearly franchises like Need For Speed, Madden, Live, Tiger Woods, and now probably Skate, consistently sell millions of copies and their casual gaming service Pogo was unrivaled until the Wii started moving into their market space.

We all know about the attempts to buyout Ubisoft and Take-Two. Ubisoft seems to be safe with how well Assains Creed did and the success of every Tom Clancy game, but Take-Two seems to only be worried about bolstering their worth and squeezing as much money out of Ea as possible. Eventually Im sure that EA will own Take-Two and with that they will have a great foundation to build a console for the future generation of likely to hit shortly after 2010.

In 2007 Ea was only second to Nintendo in number of units sold. Although this was across just about every platform, that is a huge number of titles when you realize that Nintendo used its big three (Mario, Metroid, and Zelda) along with all of the casual gamers sucked up by the Wii and DS. After Gta IV is released and Take-Two joins EA, They will indeed be the biggest developer and maybe one of the most talented.

EA as a software company turning into a hardware company could make development for a new console cost effective through their own proprietary middleware and could possibly drop the cost of development for big time titles. The ps3 complicated hardware and Microsoft’s strict policies for online and development of hardware like rock band accessories could both be avoided by having a little bit of input from their code devs. EA’s console could potentially be more dev friendly than Wii without giving up cutting edge technology.

If you add up the sales from EA and Take-Two and assume that They keep the NFL and NBA license to themselves (with the only baseball competition being a PS3 exclusive) You could assume that EA would have at least a built in install base over 10 million customers after the 1st year (and that would be giving them a generous attach rate of 4 games to 1 console, If you change the attach rate to 2-1 that would 20 million) that could rival the sales of the PS2 over its lifespan.

If you look at Microsoft and their first party offerings you can’t really explain how they survived without saying Halo over and over again, and how different would the ps2’s story be if you took out the GTA titles? 4 of the ps2’s top seven titles are from EA/Take-Two, 2 maddens NFSU 2 and gta San Andreas. The poor Dreamcast didn’t receive any EA support and that was the biggest nail in its coffin.

As much as I hate to say it the only reason I brought the Wii was for Nintendo titles and other than a couple third party games I think everything else is trash. When the time comes to choose a new console in 20-10-2011 I would probably go Ea strictly for the 1st party. That will essentially be the only deciding bullet point next gen when you consider that just about every third party is giving up on exclusives.

EA maybe a slimy corporation that pumps out yearly rehashes but I will admit that most times I enjoy those rehashes, and when you throw in 2K basketball, GTA, Bioshock, potentially Bethesda games, and a Madden every couple of years I along with just about everyone I talk to would be a sucker for an ea console.

Getting Peter Moore actually makes me think this may happen. Maybe not soon, and maybe not even in the next generation, but after that? Maybe.

Would I buy an EA console? Probably not.

Would they release a slightly tweaked version every god damn year?

You guys would (potentially) be willing to give up GTA, Bioshock, Skate, Will Wright titles, just about every sports game, Rockband, and all Sid Meier titles to spite EA?

page 20 in the April Game Informer.

They say EA is looking into producing a console, but they are waiting to see how the PS3 ends up in a couple of years. IT WILL HAPPEN.

You guys would...SHUT THE HELL UP SKINS.

Seriously EA wouldn't do this, the R&D costs are stupidly high, they would have annouced it by now if they were going to release it in time for 2010 as they would need to generate interest in said console. If they continue to churn out these titles and not bring out a console they would be hundreds of millions of dollars better off without the obvious risk of a new hardware launch.

Now you may say oh wait they are a huge corparation they have loads of money. Take microsoft as an example they just recently turned a profit after 5 years. I doubt this EA console will ever happen.

thats what I'm not so sure about. like JoNT said they ARE talking about it and I think if they do decide to make a console it will be in close development with Someone like AMD or even Apple

EA has some pretty deep pockets and is real good at marketing. It is very likley.

I wouldn't call it "very likely."

I'd call a possibility. And I doubt it would happen next gen. It would be 2 generations before they could get it something like a console launch up and running.

No, just no. I'll go back to building pc's before I will buy an EA console. A few decent titles here and there does not make up for much when it comes to EA.

Any of you guys n'gals old enough to remember the Panasonic 3DO console. EA had a big hand in that console, but Nintendo and Sega were too much for them. While that failed their intention maybe for this one console future they keep wagging about.

I find the trend EA is taking really worrying, where much of the industry talent is being sucked into their maw. Quite soon they'll have so much, that some may fear being indepedent, and actually create anything decent for fear of having your outfit acquired.

If T2 gets sucked up by EA, it'll be a sad day, as every industry needs a renegade, who treads the wire between good and bad. Under EA, T2 are just another nameless developer, striped of rank, freedom and creative vision.

I was naturally annoyed when EA purchased Bioware, and while T2 is a sound investment to them, making EA bigger does little for smaller developers. Imagine what it would be like with only one or two publishers to buy games from.

Even buying all games from Nintendo would be torture, let alone EA.

The only reason I'd like to see EA develop a console is to watch them bleed money for several years. Essentially that is exactly what they would be signing on for if they went forward with their own hardware development.

What I would find more likely (but still unlikely, if you follow me), would be EA and several other 'Top Tier' publishers getting together with hardware developers like IBM, AMD, nVidia etc, to try and develop the so-called 'Unified Gaming Platform' that is vaguely referenced by industry bigwigs who would like to streamline their development process, and thus increase their bottom line.

If I were a shareholder of EA, and I heard they were going to try and develop a console on their own, I'd sell my shares rapidly. While the value of their franchises is undeniable, the history of the industry is littered with 3DO's, Jaguars, and Dreamcasts.

In the end, companies are usually best served sticking to their core strengths. EA's is as a Publisher. And while they may be the Biggest, they are far from the Best. I would urge them to focus on doing what they do now better, before taking on hardware development.

Despite the brands they control, they'd ultimately fail. They'd sell far fewer copies of titles by limiting them to one system, and the types of gamers who'd buy it just for Madden or GTA aren't likely to purchase a lot of other games. They'd be much better off staying third party, especially since they'd likely be losing a shit ton on each system sold. It's a foolish gamble to take.
