I love portable gaming. I'm not sure exactly why, but I do. It could be because the Gameboy Pocket was my first console. It could be because I like retro games and most portable games seem to have more of a retro style to them. For whatever reason though, I have more fun with a game when it's on a portable console. Puzzle Quest is a good example of this.
This generation of consoles is suffering from a problem that I'm surprised hasn't really been addressed. There's no one console that has an awesome balance of multiple genres. I know that the problem has definitely gotten better recently with Microsoft releasing a plethora of RPGs and Nintendo catering a bit more to the core gamer, but it's still a problem. You're just not seeing a console like the SNES or the PS2 in this generation... However, I think that we might be ignoring one little thing... The DS.
I was going through my DS library today and I noticed just how many different styles of games I owned (all of them great games). I had shooters, RPGs, Puzzle games, Racing games, Fighting games, etc. etc. This got me thinking about the DS's upcoming library as well and just how many awesome games are on their way for the little machine. I started searching through the DS trailers at Gametrailers.com and my browser soon became overwhelmed with "New Tab"s of trailer after trailer.
So, if you're a gamer like me (ESPECIALLY if you like RPGs) I want you to consider the DS if you haven't already and if you own one, to maybe pay a bit more attention to it. It's, in my opinion, the best console on the market now with the broadest and best library. I'd like to hear what you guys have to say about this as well so make sure and comment. For now, here are a bunch of videos for the games that I want the most for my DS, some have already come out, but I don't have them yet, haha.
Suikoden Tierkreis:
This game is so gorgeous... I'm glad it's using those pre-rendered backgrounds too, I was wondering why more RPGs weren't doing that.
Dragon Quest IX:
I think that Square Enix's choice to release this on the DS was awesome. The DS is better fitting for Dragon Quest's simple, old-school gameplay than a home console anyway.
Winds of Nostalgio:
I'm a little iffy on this one, but it looks like a decent RPG with some pretty graphics.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time:
I LOVED the first FF:CC for the DS and I'm still playing it to collect all the equipment. This one's characters look even MORE customizable and the online co-op is going to rock. I can't wait for this one, it's a definite buy.
7th Dragon:
I need to see more on this game, but I pretty much love any JRPG on the DS and this one looks pretty with some neat character designs so it's piqued my interest.
Avalon Code:
Another iffy one, but the graphics are gorgeous and even if it's a grind-fest, that's always so much easier to do while on the go.
Castlevania: Order of Eclessia:
This game just looks so awesome in every way. I wasn't interested in the last few Castlevanias, but I'll be picking this one up.
I haven't picked this up yet, but I will when the price goes down a bit.
Kirby's Super Star Ultra:
I haven't gotten this one yet either, but it will not escape me for long.
Fire Emblem DS:
It's Fire Emblem on the DS. Nuff' said.
Mushroom Men DS:
The verdict is still out on this one, but I think it'll be good.
Valkyrie Profile: The Accused One:
Another one that I'm pretty much set on. Looks great.
Pokemon Platinum:
Stop taking my money Nintendo...
Ninja Town:
I MUST have this game.
Tales of Hearts:
I REALLY wanted Tales of Innocence so I hope this one makes it state-side.
Chrono Trigger DS:
Duh.
Line Rider 2:
Awesome.
Dragonball Origins:
I'm holding out hope for this one, I've heard a lot of good things about the controls.
Phantasy Star: Zero
I can't wait to play this one with friends.
Metal Slug 7:
MAAAAAN-TIIIIIIME!!
There are plenty of other games as well, but I figured this was more than enough for now. As you can probably tell, I love RPGs, but there are so many other genres represented on the DS. I encourage you to give it a shot.
I love my DS, I got mine just to play through FF IV again and now I've found myself flooded with good games. It's a shame though that I didn't get it sooner because some games are just so god damn hard to find now like hotel dusk, and revenant wing. but for cereal try Space invaders revolution its now consuming my whole free time
You know, I feel the same way. I mean I love my 360, Wii and PS2, but yeah I really give way more attention to my DS. I have about 20 DS games, double what I have for any of the previously listed consoles. There are TONS of good games on the DS, and yes it helps that they are half the price of 360 and PS3 games.
Also, like jackal27, I just love that a lot of the games give off a old school feel on the DS. I just still have a great attraction to 2D games, and I don't understand why more aren't made for the 360 or PS3 or even Wii.
With the success of Mega Man 9 I really hope more developer's start getting back into 2D. I mean just think how much a 2D Metroid or Zelda on the Wii would kick ass. It could be just as good as the old 2D ones on SNES, but they could put in way nicer sprites and stuff and make the game mammoth in size because of how much you could fit on a disc these days in 2D. I seriously don't know why no one has done this yet.
@endstiem- Yeah, I am an RPG guy, hahaha. These are just the ones that I'M interested in though. I'm excited about a lot of others too that I just didn't post as well. Like Prince of Persia, Retro Games Challenge, Super Dodgeball Brawlers, Space Invaders Revolution, and a lot of others.
@randombullseye- yeah, no kidding. The GBA has an awesome variety as well.
@dudemullet- I've been thinking about getting space invaders, I probably will if I can find it pretty cheap.
@Cloud9- I think that developers will start getting back into 2D and I think that a lot of those games will be DLC like Mega Man 9.
Awesome write up man, loved the games chosen and totally agree. I've loved playing on ma DS I just find it hard to spend money on them but it basically is the snes of today and what with the slightly retro theme it has going with the pretty tweaks and gorgeous sound.
You've inspired me to get more into my ds and stop wasting so much time with my ps3 (even though I've just been playing old final fantasies on it lol)
@luzer7072- Hey thanks! You do as well, hahaha. Yeah, I like Dragonball and I'm still going to wait and see if it's any good, but from people I know that are playing the Japanese version, I hear it's good.
@harukai- Awesome! I hope they make more FF games for the DS. I can't wait until they start porting the PSone Final Fantasys to portable systems.

about me
I'm mostly a retro gamer. I don't hate everything after the 90's, but I tend to prefer retro game design. I enjoy alot of indie and portable games, not to mention a blockbuster title every now and then. However, like I said, the majority of my gaming takes place on older consoles.
Game Run!- Check out the exciting life of a poor retro gamer!
11/19/08- Batman(NES) and Power Blade
10/11/08- Mystical Ninja and Clash at Demonhead
10/10/08- MASSIVE update! NES and loads of games.
8/12/2008- Killer Instinct, TMNT:TF, Super Tennis
7/20/2008- Inindo, Wonderboy, Crusader of Centy
7/9/2008- NBA Jam, Out of This World
My Favorites:
Keep in mind that these change SO much... I'm terrible at lists...

Shoot me a PM when you pick up Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time and Phantasy Star Zero.
Considering you put emphasis on variety, that's a shitload of RPG trailers....
:) But I do agree with you. A vast majority of those games look awesome.
Don't discredit that you can also play GBA games.

Oh, I'm also pumped about the new Tecmo Bowl game, hahaha.
Every single game I have preordered for later this year is represented in your post. You, sir, have fantastic taste in games.
Dragon Ball kinda snuck up on me though. I'm not really into the series, but the game looks great.
