You may just not be the type of personality that WoW hooks... What got me was the skills and professions. I was an enchanter/tailor, and I'd go out of my way to collect every freaking pattern I could get, even if it meant doing stupid side quests or hitting the neutral AHs. Then I did the same thing with stupid things like cooking. I had to have every freaking recipe, for no good reason other than to say I had it.
Other people get hooks by the social aspect, the grinding, the battlegrounds, collecting pets, whatever... A lot of WoW's success is that it has a bit of something for everyone. Consider yourself lucky you're not hooked. That game was a huge timesink for me.
If you're really dying to get hooked on it, there's something for everyone. Try a few different classes up to at least level 10 (pre 10 can be a bit dry, for any class) or if you have the drive for it, level 20. What interests me, at times, is going through and learning new skills, and see what I can accomplish with them.
Also, PvP or PvE server? Some would argue that the constant fear of random death on a PvP server adds to the experience.
It may just be that you prefer to be entertained story and gameplay over itemisation. As a game, it's really quite mediocre in terms of what it offers but it keeps people coming back to get that extra +1 stat or squeeze a bit more out of their itemisation. Of course that whole scenario just doesn't appeal to some.
I've gone through the same type of thing, of course, my MMO of choice was the Matrix Online. I fell in love with that game's storyline and multiple professions you could use, and you weren't limited to one! You could be a hacker(think mage), and the pvp situation changes that needs a few front men to battle it out, so you change loadouts to be a dual-desert-eagle-wielding-mad-motherf*cker, blasting at every sonuvabitch that's so much as looks at you the wrong way!
... I need a g/f. :(
I simply can't find the impetus to play
No problem; don't play. The only problem is if you feel that for some reason you should be playing -- but if you don't have a reason, then ... why play?
The only reason I play is because it's a way for me to play co-op in a game. I can (and do) play Team Fortress, but I'm working against another team of people. You can do that in WoW, but the part I like is co-op against some big monster or something.
If your friends play, but it isn't something that defines them and thus leaves you feeling lonesome, then don't play. (And if you do feel peer pressure to play, because you're feeling left out, try to get your buds to play a different game. WoW seems to eat 1 out of every 5 souls.)
If you don't wanna play it, then don't?
I don't see what's complicated about this.
