The Fighting Review: Brawl Hierarchy
jack of knaves | 7:44 PM on 03.24.2008 3 comments

After having a solid couple of weeks with Smash Bros. Brawl, I figured I'd weigh in on the new perspective. Formerly, while playing Melee I found character imbalance to be fairly disappointing with well-established character tiers. Not that it's something out of the ordinary in fighting games...it's just slightly depressing when the good folks at Nintendo(or SNK or Capcom) bring you a good 20+ characters to play as and, in the long run, only around half of those characters are common in competitive play. It's something the fighting genre in general has become accustomed to.

However, with Brawl, the character balance has been shuffled a bit. No longer do matches consist of Sheik, Fox, Marth, and the like, but character usage is now further spread out. Certainly there are still characters with advantages, but the playing in Brawl feels a bit more even. (These comments disregard the use of items and final smashes given the obvious advantages)The removal of exploits such as wave dashing and l-canceling provides a more even playing field for experienced players.

So how does this new smash bros. stack up next to tradition? I believe it's a radical improvement. Granted the style is generally the same, I'm glad the balancing provides more character variety and tactical options. Also, the gameplay flows much more than the more mechanical traditional fighters. I'm sure that as time goes on we'll develop a much more distinct tier list. But until then, I'll enjoy working with the variety.

Yea, I use to always play as Falco because he dominated, in my opinion but now they've smoothed plenty of stuff out so I'm all over the place. Though I still contend that if you learned any character well enough in Melee (or Brawl) you cold dominate with them.

Actually, Link has always been my man but I'm starting to rock with Lucario. I really like Metaknight, but he just absolutely has no good smash attacks to send someone out of the ballpark.

I think initially a lot of people will use Ike, but later on the faster characters will reign supreme once again. Pit seems to be a favorite right now too, because his play style is a little on the cheap side.

Um, the big problem here is that, as you yourself stated, the game has only been out for a little over two weeks. The tiers in Melee weren't fully established until years after it was released. It took a long, long time and a lot of playing for the better players to figur eout tricks like Wavedashing and L-Canceling and to figure out why guys like Fox, Falco, Sheik and all them were great characters. It actually wasn't until fairly recently that people discovered the Ice Climber's infinite combo in Melee.

So yeah, we can sit around and declare that the character balance is a lot better in Brawl NOW, but it doesn't really hold any water at all because nobody has played the game to any real extent yet.

@Bluefusion: As of right now, it's looking like speed isn't going to be the determining factor anymore. A lot of the things that made fast characters good in Melee don't apply to Brawl because those options have been radically changed or removed altogether(For instance, a lot of fast characters don't have good smashes anymore, like Sheik). Until we know what kind of weird shit the high level players are going to turn up, anyone could end up being the game's top player. Wario or Ganondorf have as much a chance of landing at the top as Fox or Falco.
