Games that define generations
j00zt1n | 2:21 AM on 03.03.2008 17 comments

I've been playing the Virtual Console on my Wii a lot lately. A few nights ago I got to
thinking: I always have one favorite game on any given console, and it's usually by a long
shot. It seems that everybody has their own defining games for each system, the game
that they will play without fail each time they go and hook up the old machine for another
game.

What I'm wondering, Destructoid, is what these games are for each of you. Everyone who
reads this, which games defined each generation of gaming for you? It can be anything,
from the obvious Mario or Sonic to the obscure crap nobody's ever heard of. Here, I'll start:

NES : Punch-Out!!
Genesis: Sonic 3 and Knuckles

SNES: Zelda: A Link to the Past
Game Boy Color: Tetris DX

N64: Star Fox 64
PlayStation: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Dreamcast: Crazy Taxi
PS2: The Beatmania IIDX series

I left a few consoles out, because they didn't really have any games that had that big an
impact on me. Great systems either way, but the games I listed above are some of my
absolute favorites, and I'd go back and play each of them again any day. As a matter of
fact, I've played through four of them in recent history.

Which games define these generations for you?

Xbox : Halo
I cant think of any other game with the same impact for that machine.

The rest of my list is:
Sega - Sonic 2. Still love that game.
GB - POKEMON! YEAH!
Ps1 - Hmm... probably FFVIII, the first FF i got, but not the last :P
N64 - Goldeneye. I didnt actually own a N64, but i played it every chance i got.
Ps2 - GTA San Andreas. Also Timesplitters 2, so much multiplayer awesomeness. Like goldeneye/perfect dark for ps2.
Pc - Half life 2.

therob92's Destructoid Blog
NES : Mario
Genesis: Sonic and Knuckles

SNES: Mario RPG
Game Boy Color: pokemon

game boy Advance: Golden Sun
N64: Mario 64
PlayStation: Parasite Eve

XBOX: KOTOR
PS2: God Of War -> this is the only one that I had to think about
Gamecube: RE4

PC: Quake
Fallout
Diablo II
DOTA

PC has a few because it obviously lasts longer than the consoles, thats just the main progression of the games I played on PC.

Seriously though, the PS2 basically dwarfs all the other consoles in terms of the amount of fantastic games it had. SNES is probably the only one that is even close.

BigPopaGamer's Destructoid Blog
NES - MegaMan2
SNES - Final Fantasy 3, Chrono Trigger

twincannon's Destructoid Blog
PC (favorite gaming platform): Quake
NES: Couldn't decide between megaman 2 and SMB3, so I'm going to go with... River City Ransom!
SNES: FF6 (favorite game)
Genesis: General Chaos for obscure awesomeness (runner-up: Rocket Knight Adventures)
N64: Mario 64
PSX: Tekken
Dreamcast: Guilty Gear X

after that I really don't have any favorites that instantly stick out in my mind.
Anus Mcphanus's Destructoid Blog
Damn straight it's lylat wars, not star fox 64 :P hmmmm for me it'd be:

Snes: Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island
PSX: Final Fantasy VII
N64: Goldeneye
Saturn: Panzer Dragoon Saga
Dreamcast: Skies of Arcadia
PS2: GTA - Vice City
Gamecube: Smash Bros melee

Bloody heck that was hard just picking one game per system..
hc22's Destructoid Blog
SNES: Mortal Kombat, and Killer Instinct.
N64: F-Zero X, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark
Gamecube: Super Smash Brothers.
Gameboy Advanced: Rockman Zero.

j00zt1n's Destructoid Blog
Thanks for all the great answers, everybody! I had actually forgotten about some of these classics. And I never even knew that SF64 had been renamed to Lylat Wars until I looked it up just now. One more bit of useless information goes into my head.
