Cross Promotion Fighters: Hurt or Help?
iwontusemyname | 5:44 PM on 06.24.2008 11 comments

So now, apparently, Kratos, of God of War is a rumored character in
Soul Calibur IV. In a game with Darth Vader, Yoda, and Darth Vader's Secret
Apprentice already included, this is another SWEET shot in the AWESOME arm. So then I
would assume that Marcus Fenix would be the in Xbox 360 version?

In a generation that gave us the Super Smash Bros. Brawl Nintendo-gasm with added
Sonic and Snake sprinkles, Mortal Kombat fighting DC Comics characters, and even way
back when with a Spartain in Dead or Alive 4, and Ryu of Ninja Gaiden fame
being it's own Halo 3 armor...

Does it help? Or does it hurt?

Seriously, I'm asking you. I'm not sure myself. I love playing as Sonic and Snake, two of
my favorite video game characters of all time, in a game that lets me bash the hell out of
characters from a few of my favorite franchises ever. But where does it go from here?
What's the next Super Smash Bros. going to be like? Just more characters? It's going
to be pretty hard to top that one, even if Classic Mega Man might show up.

The same goes with Soul Calibur IV. It's one thing to have Link and Spawn, two
additions that are ridiculous in their own right. But Vader? And who wants to play as his
apprentice that we've only seen in trailers? Blatant advertising, yes. But aren't all of these
the same way? This is product placement at it's most incredible. What's the next move? Big
Daddy in the next Tekken?

While it's fun to see all these guys, I still would buy a game with good mechanics and it's
own characters with their own interesting personalities and looks.

I'm not trying to take the piss out of these titles or anything. I just wanted to see what you
guys thought.

I love Soul Caliber and I've played it quite a bit, adding these characters into the games make me extremely happy. As I love the mechanics and the fighting styles it just adds more to an already great game by throwing in these cross promotional characters.

Being able to see how my favorite characters work in a different franchise is awesome.

Personally I remain unaffected by the whole Star Wars characters in SC4. Wether they're fun or not (or included at all) I remain equally interested in either franchises.

Though they're nice to have, just more characters/variety. Kratos would just kick ass to have though.

Its good business sense really. In the same way how many of us would frown upon ads in our games, the very presence of Vader, Yoda etc, is a smart marketing move, that will benefit both Namco Bandai and Lucasarts.

Remember, The Clone Wars CG series is out soon, so seeing these SW characters, keep us all in that SW mindset.

I'm sure Namco would've enjoyed working with these world famous characters, just the same as the did with SC2.

None of these games will unseat MvsC2, though.

Whoops, Double-Post.

Help. I wouldn't even think of buying SC4 if it wasn't for Yoda.

I'm not reall fussed about cross promotion in games, but the starwars characters in SC4 just seems a bit too random, and a bit cheap. It's almost like they're trying to push SC4 to the western audiences as much as they possibly can, so they do that with StarWars and giant tits.

Still, Kratos in SC4 would be pretty damn awesome. Too bad I aint got a PS3.

Cross promotion is fine with me. Personally, I was thrilled to be able to fight as Link in SC2 for the GC. However, now that I own all 3 current gen systems, I'll def go with the PS3 version of SC4 because of Vader being in it. The cameos don't sell me on the game, but I will make a choice between versions, given the chance.

Also, where the hell is Marvel Vs. Capcom 3? There's your cross promotion!
Coonskin05's Destructoid Blog
I say why not. It's sorta cool to have cameos in your fighting games.

When it comes to fighting games (not a huge fan, but do enjoy mashing buttons) the more characters the better I say. Its all about the options. The more options a player has to choose from, the better I say.

Besides, its not like these hidden crossover characters are taking anything away from the game. If you don't like them, don't play as them. Theres no rule that says you must play every character in a fighting game. Typically I end up liking only about half of the characters in most fighting games I've played.

And if your worried about story cohesiveness in a fighting series... why?

it's weird to me when people call other people their screen names or user names in real life. so just call me conor.

and not only am i not proficient at photoshop, i don't even have a copy!

i enjoy (not) sleeping, playing bass guitar, not looking directly into people's eyes, orange chicken, and making non-pornographic short films.

Short films that I actually made! Woah!

so...video games. amirite?

i guess you can call me an "art-fag" or "plot-fucker" or whatever the term is, because i enjoy games with a robust and (mostly) rewarding single player campaign. (that, and most of my friends play some multiplayer games i don't like, so i'm sort of in a pickle here.) i also like odd quirky titles and some rhythm games (like elite beat agents and parappa and so forth. not so much guitar hero anymore...)

i'm not tied down to any particular console, but if it has a metal gear solid game, a resident evil game, or a sonic game (yes...that sonic) then i'd most certainly RSVP. i'm also a fan of katamari, phoenix wright, metroid prime, sam & max, psychonauts, killer 7 and earthbound. although on occasion, i've been known to pop in teenage mutant ninja turtles IV and mortal kombat 3, just for kicks.
