About Me

Welcome to my blog.

I'm a 26 year old gamer from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, who was brought up with PC games and Nintendo. My first gaming experiences where on the MSX and the C64 but the first game that I really remember playing was Prince of Persia on my 80286 PC.
After that I was hooked on games, especially the Lucas Arts and Sierra adventure games engaged me in a way I never thought possible before that. The day I saw a NES at a friends place with Super Mario Bros. on it I had to get one and after whining a lot my father finally got me one... Mario, Zelda, Metroid... they where all mine to play now and ate up so many hours of my childhood, I was a Nintendo kid and my love for Nintendo's games remain till this day.
I took a break from console gaming after the SNES era even though I stuck with PC games for the entire time. I had a gamecube which I didn't own many games for because I only bought it to play Metroid Prime. A few years back I bought a Nintendo DS on a whim. The DS rekindled my love for console gaming and got me to keep up with gaming news (here on Destructoid) and also got me to buy a Wii.

I also own a European TF2 server:

Host/IP: ares.ams-sec.org:27015

* Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN)
* Sam and Max: Hit the Road (PC)

The best video game music -- Nomination round
insomnia | 9:36 PM on 03.15.2008 34 comments

Update: I dropped the original rendition requirement for the piece

The best video game music -- Nomination round

Welcome all to a series I thought up while playing audiosurf to some of my favourite video game music. I want to know what the destructoid community thinks is the best video game music produced....

The set up

This match up will take the form of GameFAQs character matches. Today I will let the community nominate all their favourite video game music pieces, after that I will sort them up in brackets of four and I will post those matches on my blog. In these posts I will let you vote for your favourite of that round and the two most voted for entries will go to the next round. This will repeat until only one remains which will be declared the winner.

Like I said before, this will be the nomination round so please put your favourite video game music piece in the comments. Your nomination will have to satisfy these demands to qualify:

* The music was produced specifically for a video game -- No licensed soundtracks
* You will link to a video or music file which has the full piece in it -- People who never played the game will want to hear it as well. You can post multiple renditions of the piece.

I hope this will give everyone some nice music to listen to and make for an interesting match up.

My Nomination:

Godot - The Fragrance of Dark Coffee from Phoenix Wright - Trials and Tribulations.

I nominate this piece because it has such a soulful jazzy vibe and really gets me in a relaxed mood.

The original rendition:

The Jazz rendition: (My favourite rendition)

The Orchestral rendition:

I'll go for The Tragic Prince from Castelvania Symphony of the Night

Michiru Yamane is just a genius, the whole soundtrack is full of win, but this song has a place in my passionate heart.

The theme for Ganondorf's castle from OoT. This theme is only one of the amazing soundtrack from OoT, but this one really stands out.

It built such tension while you were climbing the tower and then just abruptly stops once you reach the room, but it flowed so well. There are countless sounds available from this game, but I could only nominate one. :/

Oh man, I had Phoenix's Steel Samurai ringtone set to mine for about a year. Everyone needs a little Ace Attorney with their phone calls!

As for my nomination:

Chrono Cross - Time's Scar

This is just a personal favorite, really. I love the tension built by the strings and the sweetness of the melody. There's also a carnivale quality to it that makes it especially memorable and representative of Chrono Cross's atmosphere.

OoT Saria's Song / Lost Woods

Or anything from OoT, that is the best soundtrack of a game EVER in opinion.

Or I really like Midna's song from Twilight Princess, here's the smash bros version of it

That Phoenix Wright song is pretty cool; it reminds me of the Gabriel Knight soundtrack, actually, particularly this song:

Best song ever nominations?
Silent Hill has some absolutely FANTASTIC music.
Silent Hill: http://gh.ffshrine.org/song/106/1

Never forgive me, Never forget me: http://gh.ffshrine.org/song/200/14

There's a couple other good ones, such as "You're Not Here" and "Letter From the Lost Days" from the SH3 OST, but I believe those might be licensed tracks from Melissa Williamson, rather than written specifically for the game.

I had friends over so sorry for being this late.

Anyway, the only one I can think about nominating right now (aka being tired), is this one remix made by Dale North.

I have to go with Tetris because of all the great remixes that song has gotten, and the fact that it's one of the most recognizable videogame tunes out there.

But Eyes on Me from FFVIII still gives me goosebumps, the credits song is just icing on the cake. It kept me speechless when I saw the ending for the first time. I was young and never watched movies like It's a Wonderful Life at that time.

And yes, I am a total CGI whore :)
