I have a theory about Nier (in the Gestalt flavor, at least): Square Enix and Cavia had to decide between making the game visually attractive or making it sound like a heavenly cacophony. They decided this fate with a simple coin toss. Heads - it would be visually stunning, Tails - it would be an auditory orgy of sonic goodness the likes of which no video game has ever been subjected to. If you've heard any of Nier's two-disk soundtrack, you already know how that coin toss ended.

I could sit here and type out how awesome-awesome-awesome I think this soundtrack really is or you could just click on the youtube vids below and decide for yourself (while Youtube allows it). note:

Dtoid's bbcoder is giving me the usual 'Assertion failed: bad pk' error...so it'll just be links to youtube. Sorry! >_<

Yeah, the game pissed me off a lot with some poor choices but the soundtrack was the first one to catch my ear in quite some time.
... havent' played the game because they should have gone for gameplay, but nice to know that they did do something right!
Occams electric toothbrush: I felt as if the story more than made up for the bad design choices (and there are plenty). The DLC is like an LSD trip, btw.

Elsa: the gameplay's not that bad, once you get past those three things mentioned up there, the lack of sidequest indicator being a big turnoff.

Solgrim: the music really does enhance the heaviness of the story. I can think of at least three instances where I said "ohh...damn..". It is a game built on tragedy, after all.
@ikiryou: I sent it back to gamefly when I realized the combat would never get any better or more interesting. I'll just watch all the cutscenes on youtube as that's all I really want to see anyway.
