Went to Gamestop today and sold some games that I've finished and haven't been playing. But selling my shit at Gamestop always leaves me the feeling two things: 1) that I'm lazy and 2) that I got shafted. Lazy because some of these games have been sitting on my shelf for a good year. I could have easily decided that I would never play these games ever again and decided to move them quick. Shafted because well... you'll see.
Here's what I brought over to sell and what I got for them:
DS
- Mario Hoops 3 on 3 ($9)
- Pokemon Diamond ($10)
Wii
- Rockstar Games Table Tennis ($8)
XBOX360
- Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 ($3)
- Prince of Persia Limited Edition ($18)
- Guitar Hero 2 ($5)
- GRAW ($3)
- GRAW2 ($4)
When I got my store credit, it left me thinking; had I put in more effort and auctioned some of these games on ebay, could I have gotten more for them? If so, how much is the effort worth when going through all of that crap? (i.e. taking pictures, writing up the description, etc.)
I definitely think I could have gotten more than $4 for Ghost Recon 2. But in the same vein I don't know if I could even sell Rockstar's Table Tennis for $8 on ebay. What do you think? Is it worth the hassle? Would you sell your copy of Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 for $3?
Mind bottling.
So in order to make me feel less like a Gamestop whore, I used my trade in cash to get myself a copy of Uncharted for my new PS3. :)
Dirty whores shoot up lots of drugs to distract them from the fact that they are dirty whores. Totally unrelated, my pharmacy is open if your wallet is feeling a bit heavy.
It's because you are a whore now for trading in your games, which in turn will be marked up 300% and resold to some poor gamer who doesn't know any better. I keep all my games, because A. I love my collections of stuff, and B. who knows when I'll want to play a game again. Hell, I don't even sell movies anymore. Except Starship Troopers 3. Because fuck that movie.
I never ever want to get rid of my games. I'm wholeheartedly agree with Blehman because I also like my various collections of stuff. Stuff is great never sell it, you'll regret it later.
Here, I'll give you a better reason Toucansam. Once, long, long ago, I was a kid. With a SNES. I used to trade in my games to get new ones at a ratio of something like 3 to 1. Fast forward to today, where I have to go to ebay to get games for semi-expensive to very expensive, and I regret selling them in the first place. Never sold Secret of Mana though, still have mah original.
@blehman:
I completely agree. I actually still have a copy of my original Secret of Mana as well. Also FF2 and FF3. I guess my point is, I still feel like a dirty whore for selling Rockstar Table Tennis for the Wii. And logically, I know that there is no way that I'll EVER want to play that game again. Ever.
My brother actually made 3 bucks when he traded in a game at gamestop. It was Tony Hawks Proving Ground, which he managed to get for 6 bucks and trade in for 9 bucks. Other than that, gamestop trade ins are a total rip off
I trade my games into a local store called Cool Stuff. They pay out in cash and keep all of their stock in display, even imported PS1 and Saturn games. Find a store like that in your area and trade in there if you feel guilty doing it in GameStop. Odds are the payout rate won't be as high but if nothing else it will relieve some of the stigma.
After being incredibly stupid in my younger years and trading a bunch of amazing stuff that I regret (EINHANDER!!!), I now only trade something in when something is absolute shit and I know for a fact I will never have the urge to touch the game again coughPrinceOfPersiacough
And to relieve the "I'm a dirty whore" stigma I definitely don't abuse Gamestop's Used Game return policy to essentially make it a free rental service. -_-
No trading for me either. I make sure every game I buy is something I wanna keep. And even if it still sucks I keep it. I try to fast forward 10-20 years from now and couldn't imagine not having the games I've owned. I guess part of it is for nostalgia's sake too.
Fuck goosex. I've been waiting for Parappa 2 for over a year now. And since I don't constantly go back and post shit, they got rid of my account.
Ebay: you are almost guaranteed half of your purchase price. and the winner of the game still pays less than he/she would at gamestop. Its not hard. And with games, its easier still, because you can put in the games barcode, and everything comes up, no pictures needed.
Its so awesome that you got $4 for GRAW2, when they will charge $29.99 for it.
Oh and a pro-tip. Always buy new games from Gamestop. They make like $1-$4 on a new game, where as with a used game, they make around $30-$40 dollars.
That's how they are a billion dollar company. They want you to buy the used games, because thats how they make money.
And, unless you have to, never, NEVER, pre-order a game (unless its something awesome, like a mirrors edge bag or a toy). The reason they ask you to pre-order is because they take that money, which technically isn't used for anything yet, put it in the bank, and get interest on it. thus making MORE money off of you. If you buy new, they can't put that money in the bank, because most of it goes back to the manufacturer.
I just have to say it: FREE I totally disagree with you. Dont buy used because then gamestop makes more money. Why did they make money? Because they provide us trade ins for old games and then discounts on used games. We accept this agreement. Next on preorders, they are providing a service for us in exchange for our money. Were you going to invest your five dollars or buy a slushee? Seriously, just put the money down if you want it. Capitalism. Seriously.
Iconsam its because your impatient. Also if you were a dirty whore you would be taking your games to a pawn shop and getting $1-5 regardless of the game for your crack fix.
Oh and by the way goozex is great for getting very popular games but not rare ones. It's also good for raiding cheap pawn shop games and turning them into newer games for cheap. P.S. For anyone not wanting to use ebay, goozex, or gamestop, start a want/trade ad on the forums here or on cheapassgamer.com people scoop shit up on forums just ask for payment before sending off games. And if your a dirty whore then so am I cuz I find myself trading stuff to gamestop all the time but my new years resolution is to stop unless I make money(like on pawn shop deals).
I don't like trading in games, ever. You simply don't get enough credit to justify bringing it back. I like having my huge ass game library, it makes me feel somewhat important. Plus the similar feelings of not knowing if I'll ever want to play a game again. FOR EXAMPLE: One of the only games I ever traded in was Crazy Taxi (insane of me, I know, but I was a dumb kid). I greatly regret doing this now, because I really want to play that game, all the time.
Hmm. I wouldn't trade a game that I totally enjoy like Dead Space or Bioshock. Those are keepers. But fuck, games that have yearly iterations, like Rock Band and Pro Evolution Soccer? I can safely say that once I got PES2008 I didn't even touch PES2007.

The markup really pisses me off as well. *sigh* Now I feel dirtier.. and more whore-like.

We are all dirty whores.
After buying bioshock 3 times now i agree with the blehman and co school of thought, and will never trade again.
This is why I use goozex. I can get way more games than if I went to gamestop.
Because you are one?
After being incredibly stupid in my younger years and trading a bunch of amazing stuff that I regret (EINHANDER!!!), I now only trade something in when something is absolute shit and I know for a fact I will never have the urge to touch the game again coughPrinceOfPersiacough

USE EBAY!
Fuck goosex. I've been waiting for Parappa 2 for over a year now. And since I don't constantly go back and post shit, they got rid of my account.

One time I payed 9$ for NCAA 07 at Gamestop and traded it in at Blockbuster for 42$ store credit toward Bioshock. It was a beautiful day...
