One of my favorite games of 2010 was the sleeper hit Darksiders. With its brilliant blend of Zelda-style dungeon-crawling and loot gathering mixed with a God of War-style fighting system, set in a post-apocalyptic (well, apocalyptic, since you're playing one of the horsemen of the apocalypse) world, it doesn't leave a lot to be desired. Many reviewers thought of the game as a copycat, trying to be as epic as Zelda with a different aesthetic. But the fact is, it had a stellar presentation with an amazing graphics engine that allowed it to stand apart from its spiritual predecessor with the green outfit and achieve a niche of its own.

Darksiders was one of the few games that I got all 1000 achievement points. Unfortunately not a whole lot has been divulged about its sequel which is slated for a June 2012 release, but one would assume a similar attention to detail and style. Where in the prequel you played as War, you play as Death in this game. I believe it is supposed to take place somewhat concurrently with Darksiders 1, so hopefully you'll see some crossover. I'm very curious to see how they alter the fighting system since you are working with a different character. THQ has been firing on all cylinders with its recent games like Saints Row the Third, so their pedigree for gaming excellence is improving rapidly.

Not much else can be said about the sequel until we get some hands-on time, but needless to say it won't be a sleeper this time around. Here's to hoping the Watcher will be back, voice by none other than the Joker himself, Mark Hamill. I can't wait, and I hope I get some hands-on time at PAX East!
