What Ever Happened to Nintendo?

Nintendo...what happened to you? You used to be cool. You used to be fun. You used to be this. Now you don't even get a port of SFIV. Now, you don't even release any good fighting games. Now...now you're releasing games called Let's Tap and Jelly Belly Ballistic Beans. Jelly...Belly...Ballistic...Beans. Just, I mean, like...really?

Kotaku posted an article [found here] early yesterday morning listed Nintendo's upcoming games...and jesus christ, this needs to stop. I realize that Nintendo has shifted gears and directed its aim towards the casual crowd, and I understand that it's given them a lot of headway in the video game industry. But they also did something that always kept the die-hard, oldschool, nintenboys happy. They released good games. Well, they used to anyway. Sure, not all of them were winners, but for every 10 shitty, poppy, crowd-pleasing games, there was one gem that made it worth having a Wii if you were a hardcore gamer. No More Heroes, Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Prime 3, Brawl and so on. And I'll even include Mario Kart, even though it was a little bit of a crowd-pleaser.

I remember when the Wii first came out, I was surprised at how many of the heavy-hitting titles came out so suddenly. I mean, within two years, Nintendo seemed to throw every great franchise it had at us. It was like it was using both your Ultra Attack as well as your Special before you've even damaged the enemy (OK, I've been playing a lot of SFIV recently, so fuck you for the lame reference). I thought this tactic of pulling out all the stops when the Wii was first released was a bad plan, but now I feel like it was ingenious of Nintendo to do so.

By releasing the new Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Mario Kart, SS Bros, even Mario Party, games in only a couple years, Nintendo gained the attention of its hardcore crowd. I mean I know that's why I bought the Wii. It wasn't because I thought it was going to be a solid system. It was because by the time the Wii came out, Nintendo had already announced all its major titles and their release dates. If the Wii didn't have all those great games come out in the first few months of its release, I probably wouldn't have gotten one.

[I beat the shit out of this bitch in some Brawl.]

But I do have one. And now it sucks. As I scrolled down the list of games set to be released in the coming months, I felt like I was looking at games that were going to coming out on LeapFrog or some kids' interactive learning toy. It's a list littered with Disney-tie-ins, Movie-tie-ins, and other obviously child-aimed games. I mean, for christ's sake, there's a developer called MumboJumbo. What the fuck is a MumboJumbo and why are they being allowed to release a game called Crazy Chicken Star Karts in March? What the fuck Nintendo? What the fuck?

Stop being pansies, and go back to being this.

You once upheld such legendary titles like Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Kung Fu, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Shadowrun, Secret of Evermore, Megaman, and so many others. Now? Now you're doing this shit.

Some would call it maturing. I just call it whoring yourself out to look good for the cool kids. You used to be a nerd, Nintendo. You used to talk about cartoons and eat lunch with the dorks and collect Magic Cards and wear over-sized clothing. You used to like comics and D&D and staying in on Fridays to play an RPG for 8 hours. But now you cut your hair and changed you clothes and suddenly like The Jonas Brothers. And to think I used to blow you to get you to work correctly. You're a whore, Nintendo...a dirty, dirty, whore.

By all means, place the blame for all those third-party games on Nintendo. It is totally their fault for not reinstating the licensing policies of the '80s and early '90s that got them hot water with all their third-party partners.

Also, you mentioned Mortal Kombat as one of the legendary "Nintendo" titles. You mean the Mortal Kombat that replaced blood with sweat and was overshadowed by the much more violent Genesis version, solidifying Nintendo's position as a kiddy developer? That Mortal Kombat?

I hardly play my Wii anymore. Just my sister and Mum and they use it for Wii Fit.

I'm praying that Madworld will be good. And I really must get No More Heroes.

At least there's decent DS games I suppose.

Boo-hoo? It's a company. That makes money. If it makes more money selling to the lowest common denominator, than guess what? That's what they're selling to. There's still the occasional good game "new" for the wii.

If you're just bitching about how they need to go back to the old-skool rock ur sox games, guess what too? PLAY THE FUCKING VC. There's where your older games are.

08 was kind of lame, but I am still enjoying the great games released.

Also there are niche hardcore titles that people never even seem to mention such as Castle of Shikigami III.

i'm not bitching about how they need to go back to that. i'm bitching about how the new games on the wii aren't trying anything new for the old school crowd. back when nintendo was awesome, it was branching out and being fearless with its gaming construct.

i'm bitching because now that nintendo is in a gaming lull (aside from Madworld), they're resorting to games that have no new innovation, no new trail. they're just sticking to a formula of short, quick-produced, mini-game style gameplay. and its a shame because I feel like the wii has potential, if it'd just stop being a bitch and get back on track.

You know what happened to Nintendo?? The GameCube happened. Great console but nobody cared about them. People had been abandoning them since the NES days, each generation selling less and less. The fact is that yes, they did make a profit on the GC, but when you sell the least consoles and struggle to differentiate yourself from your competitors, you have to do something drastically different or else you'll get crushed in the long run. The only reason why people bitch and moan about Nintendo's new direction is that we aren't their focus anymore and it's working like no one would have believed. Remember, Nintendo was to go out of business. The writing was on the wall and everyone from analysts to industry insiders to gamers agreed. We spat in their face and turned our backs on them. Most of the multiplatform games released on Xbox and PS2 weren't even ported to the GC. And when they were, nobody bought them. So do you really blame Nintendo for doing what is right for their business??

If they had brought out a console equivalent to the 360 and PS3 instead, it'd be dead in the water long ago and no one but the hardcore N-fans would have cared.

So they should turn them away? If that game passes some level of certification stability, why not release it?

Also, there are plenty of decent, not quick-cash games coming out. Have you played Deadly Creatures?

Also, Castle of Shikigami III is quite righteous.

Gah, I stopped reading once you subtly bashed Let's Tap. That game is looking like one of the most awesome games of this generation.

I agree with what both Megastryke and Celica said. When we get 1st party games on the Wii (save for Wii Music), they're absolutely fan-fucking-tastic. It's the third-party developers who need to get their asses in gear --- And ironically enough, it looks like they'll do just that this year.

Also, false advertising is still awesome advertising. ;)

Nintendo has nobody to blame but themselves for this, they stupidly stuck to their cartridge format and lost TONS of customers to the PS1, I can count the number AAA games on the N64 with both hands, PS1? I'd need my feet and I'd still run out.

Gamecube suffered from developer problems because Nintendo was such a massive prick to them, thus they lost out on exclusives and more people left because the PS2 was a huge thing and had tons of killer apps.

But Nintendo wasn't done with the hardcore fans just yet, they did a brilliant business move, they marketed heavily toward the market they wanted but released things like MP3, Brawl and the like to lure in the old fans then once they had a good foothold, out came the big guns for the casual market, its a brilliant business move if incredibly devious, thankfully Nintendo knows that its hardcore fans are some of the stupidest people on the planet so they knew they wouldn't noticed that Nintendo just suckered them and would continue to defend their business practices.

Nintendo is shit now dude, you might get one interesting game every few months while the other consoles dish out a killer app at least once a month, even the PS2 is dishing out better games than the Wii.

Nintendo has no reason to go back to their old market, they are on top everywhere though I'm sure if the market ever abandons them their old fans will welcome them back with open arms, after all Nintendo fans are the abused wives of the gaming world.

In conclusion, fuck Nintendo and fuck their business practices and to hell with their defenders for being so stupid.

Nanbu, I actually agree 100% with you haha. I had to shoot out my comment kind of quickly because I had a class to get to :P. I made it sound like it was our fault, which you can argue to an extent, but the majority of the blame would have to fall on them for sure. When Nintendo or any significant 3rd party doesn't release a game on the GameCube for over 6 months, you definitely have a problem. There was no reason for their customers to stick by them when their competitors were constantly bringing out great games through those long droughts. A big problem though was that Nintendo fans bought Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games. The developers that make games for us, not the minigame garbage, just weren't making enough money on the GC and couldn't justify bringing their games to the GameCube. The hardware restrictions didn't help either.

So basically, yeah Nintendo screwed up and lost touch with their fanbase yet for some reason people hold out hope that things can go back the way they were in the SNES days. But those days have long been dead, and while it sucks, we just have to accept it and move on. They are doing what's best for themselves, you can hate them for that if you want, but we are not their business anymore. I will still buy the occasional game for my Wii (and I still love my DS) but my heart now belongs to Sony and Microsoft. Although I am a widow of SEGA haha :P

"... but we are not their business anymore."

There has never been anything farther from the truth. I'm always baffled how lots of people make sense of the situation in this manner. Somehow, targeting "everyone" can only mean targeting just soccer moms and little children.

First, let me just say I'm really surprised at how much attention this post has received.

Second, you guys have a some really good points. Celica and Nanbu especially. Nanbu's right, nintendo did kinda of screw themselves by not going to cds with the 64. and Celica you're right about nintendo looking out for number 1.

I suppose I'm just upset because this system, which i still think could do so many better things than just moving blocks and glorified mini-games, is not doing what i'd hope it would do. I was excited when nintedo first showcased the wii-mote. I thought it was the dumbest god damn thing ever. But i still was curious nonetheless.

Since then, though, there have been a few really really great games. And Nintendo has given some unforgettable experiences. But, I dunno, it just sucks they arent the company I grew up with anymore. They're all fancy and adult-oriented and jesus christ my mom knew what Wii-Fit was...my fucking mom.

God damn it...I wanna go back in time and smack Nintendo in the face when they walked out on their deal with Sony. Just to see what it would have been like if there was a Nintendo Playstation.

For one Gregatrons, the fact that your mom knows Wii-Fit shouldn't affect your judgment. If everyone in the world knew how to get the whistle on the third level of Mario Bros. 3, would that make is any less cool?...well...maybe, poor example.

But my point is, the popularity and accessibility is still a strength of the Wii. And again, it's not Nintendo that has been creating shit, but the thirdparties that they license. The system is still young, and the affordability of the Wii and its software will really open up the market for risky and experimental games that the X360 and PS3 are starting to exclude, even if it takes some time for this to take place, and meanwhile we get a load of crap to start.

Was Mario ever hardcore? I can't think of a more casual genre than the Italian plunging platformer.
