A lot of people think graphics are a very important element of games. And I don't disagree. I believe graphics should be as crisp and beautiful and push the console to its limit. But we've reached the point where outstanding graphics have become so expected and realistic, they've kind of become stale. That's not to say I think games should look shitty. Not at all. If two games came out that were exactly the same except for a severe alteration in graphics, I'd of course chose the better looking one. That's partially the reason I'm bummed I have a Wii.
However, have graphics reached the point that seemed unimaginable a few years ago? I feel like we won't be seeing any more drastic leaps in design or presentation from games anymore. Getting excited for the graphical face-lift that comes packaged with each new console (Wii aside) was something I always looked forward too. But I think that's over. Games like Crysis, Killzone, MGS 4, Halo, RE 5, Gran Turismo, and so many others are known for pushing themselves higher and producing amazing aesthetics, but how much further can they really push?
In these days of graphical glory, I find myself getting more excited for the 2D releases. Perhaps it's because these games are rare and seeing a new IP that uses 2D is more intriguing and conspicuous than a hot girl wearing a comic book t shirt while playing Street Fighter in an arcade...and winning. Perhaps its because graphics nowadays are just a bit too "been there, done that" so I'm reverting back to the more simplistic, more refined style of gaming. Perhaps its just because most games today have this exhausting infatuation with dreary grays and browns that I just don't find appealing anymore.
Games like Odin Sphere, Braid, Castle Crashers, and the highly anticipated Muramasa are the games I find myself more keen to watching gameplay videos of. I dont know why, but watching a game in 2D is more appealing than a game in 3D. I mean 3D games most certainly do have an advantage when it comes to making gamers want to be in the game. Games like BioShock, FF12, SoTC, and others have such a heavy atmosphere and sense of grandeur that the world alone is enough to immerse in, regardless of graphics. Still though, I feel like today developers are more concerned to make a pretty game, dipping in a muddy puddle, slapping some drab, pale protagonists in there and call it a day.
2D to me has always had a special place in my heart (hence the header). I'm the type of guy that prefers the oldschool 2D PS1 RPGs rather than the big-budget, high-end ones of today. I know many people believe it's a stupid move for games to come out in 2D in today's market. I think they're wrong. I think games today are more bold and more appealing if they choose to take a chance and try 2D out...or they're just a downloadable indie title that a few hardcore gamers may give a shot.
I loves me some glorious 2D action. Odin Sphere was amazing. I'm with you on the graphics thing though--pretty is to tired. Most of the games I've enjoyed as of late haven't been the most "refined" but the gameplay was what brought me to the table in the first place. Not the pretty pictures.
I can understand where you're coming from. I tend to feel the same way as I grew up on 2D, so I tend to prefer it even to this day. It's not to say I don't enjoy some 3D endeavors, but usually something gets sacrificed in favor of making shiny graphics. I'll always pick story before graphics any day, so this current generation of games has left me feeling kind of high and dry. It's not that some of these newer RPGs aren't good, but they're not something I'll likely come back to like I would Chrono Trigger or Suikoden I & II.
I love modern 3D games, but I also really love 2D graphics. There's just something about sprite-based games that I'll always enojy. Handhelds, especially Nintendo's, are among the last places where you can still count on getting a lot of 2D games. That's why I'm wary of handhelds getting too advanced, I'm a bit worried that 2D will become a rarer novelty like it is on the consoles.
I see what you did there... :)
I'm a 2D fella myself. I like to keep the graphics simple and the game play to be what it's all about.
I think that makes sense.
I think we are in a time that 2D has the perfect chance to claim back the throne, especially on the Nintendo Wii. In fact I made an article some time ago but it never hit the blogs main page because I didn't expect that editing a saved file would not appear as new.
But aaaaaaanyway, 3D is great in creating environments but when looking at 2D games I feel a bigger artistic focus on the game development, especially as there is much more freedom of what you want to create on a game escenario.
Remember how in FF6 there was a sequence you went through the mines to escape from Kefka and it looked HORRIBLY pixeled to make it look like going through a tunnel? That's why I find making 2D games now would be excelent as we countwith the tecnology to make it much more wonderful without making much sucarifice.
MONODI makes a great point, the tech is there now to be creative and artistic as opposed to being purely realistic. With cameras and photoshop visual arts aren't just about making the most realistic pieces but about doing something innovative and intriguing.
Odin Sphere, Okami, and soon Muramasa do that. They use graphics not as a means to a better more accurate imitation of reality but to a more interesting and exciting version of it.
On the 2D line, for me sprites trump eye impaling polygons, and looking back at the prerendered backgrounds of Star Ocean 2 and FFVII there's something to be said for bringing the artistry back into games visual presentations.
sorry for the long comment.
I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want.
I would love to see popular 2D (or 2.5D) games remade as fully 3D, and the polar opposite. I would like to see fully 3D games remade as 2D. CrAzY!
I want more Odin Sphere, and for them to localize Princess Crown.
Answer: 2D.
I've been hankering for a 2D Resident Evil that plays like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs for the longest time.
Make it happen, Capcom!
@Magna - You and I seriously need to form a strike team to invade Atlus HQ and demand that they get Princess Crown over here. And for the record, no, the malware attack on their website was NOT me. :P
Anyways, as others have said, "realism" is no longer the only thing to shoot for visually in games (if it ever really was the only thing before) - both the constraints and the freedom that a 2D approach can offer makes it an entirely valid path to take. While the offerings are a bit more limited than they used to be (to be expected, since back in the day EVERYthing was 2D), I don't see it dying out anytime soon, and I'm happy to follow it wherever it goes.
what will be really interesting to see is when 3D is absolutely mastered and developers start making more artistic games in that sense. imagine an FPS with okami-like graphics. thatd be sick.
@Monodi
Yeah if you save it it doesn't publish as new, the best recourse is probably to just copy and paste it into a new blog when it's ready.
I'm all for 2D, especially when we're talking RPGs!!!
@ Grimspoon
agreed. RPGS are empirically better when done in 2D compared to 3D. IMO.
