Bioshock: an inquiry
greeneggsnsam | 11:25 AM on 06.09.2008 29 comments

I downloaded the Bioshock demo from Steam today, after finally installing that last bit of RAM I needed to play the thing. I still have a question for the community, though:

Does the game get better?

The demo, to me, seemed like a poor man's Half-Life 2, especially as I don't really like the Unreal engine. The atmosphere is obviously stunning, and I'm loving that, but the combat, even on easy, is made difficult by dark environments and less-than-perfect aiming. The Eve powers are cool and all, but they don't really seem that useful, and I found myself just using the wrench the whole time because that way if something came near me it would die, instead of me missing constantly with the powers or the guns. The Tommy Gun was okay, and it was easier once I got it, but it was still quite annoying.

I can tell that I'd absolutely love the environment and the setting, and I was pretty scared when I saw the Big Daddy take out the guy who attacked the 'Little sister'. However, as I say, I'm not too convinced with the combat. Does it become easier to kill people once you get weapon upgrades and the like? I found myself running from all enemies as much as I could, because it was so dark I couldn't hit them unless they were close enough to give me a good whack.

So, Destructoid community, please give me (hopefully non-spoilerific) some info on the way the game evolves. Thanks in advance.

I own the Collector's Edition of BioShock. I've played it and beaten it and enjoyed it. It was a good generic shooter but is definitely overhyped.

No. You should go ahead and kill yourself, because it'll never live up to whatever ridiculous hype you have heard.

On the other hand, it is a pretty damn good game though, especially if you like story in your FPS. Also, turn your f'n brightness up if you can't see anything.

Also, also, learn to use your plasmids moar effectivly. It helps.

Pffft... BioShock sucks. You fight 2 of the same enemies in the samey black/green corridors the whole game. The weapons have no variety and the plasmids feel tacked on and poorly though out. RPG elements are useless. Story, meh, if you played System Shock 2 you dont really need to pay attention. The atmosphere is kinda nice, but you'll get over it soon. You should have better luck playing a man man's FPS like COD4 or HL2, now these games, OMG don't even get me started...

Yeah, stay away from BioShock, all the critical acclaim is just a ploy to get you to buy a generic shooter.

You'll also find that once you get a few gun upgrades (most importantly the recoil ones), the guns become much easier to use.

Bioshock is great because it's more than a shooter. Take your time with it. Don't think of it as a game that must be beaten but a journey that must be traveled.

No it doesn't get better. You will be doing the same thing throughout the game. Now granted that thing is fun but it starts to wear on you after a while.

Ken Levine even said "it is a a shooter."

It is good and fun, but it has been done before. It is pretty but still another shooter.

Heh, a lot of mixed opinions here. I'll buy Metal Gear Solid 4 and beat it, and then I'll start thinking about this- considering I can't actually afford it right now. I may go for the PS3 version when it comes out, if the new features are worth getting. I suppose I'll just have to get used to the game a bit more.

I played the demo myself and didn't think the game was much to rave about. All of my friends however told me how great the game was so I bought it anyways, and in absolutely no way do I regret my purchase. Bioshock was one of the best gaming experiences I have had in recent memory.

It's true the game doesn't do anything "new", but it does do a lot of things right. In an age filled with FPS shooters this one stands out above the crowd with the top echelon of FPS shooters.

I tried the demo on XBL and kind of had the same impression. The mood/setting/story thus far were excellent, almost worth the price of admission alone, but the combat just didn't feel very satisfying to me. I didn't know if I could make my way through a whole game of that.

Where are all the people that sucked BioShock's dick for months after its release? Now, most of what I'm hearing is "mediocre," when before it was "GREATEST GAME EVAR!!"

I was hesitant in getting Bioshock when it came out and I think I only got it on impulse but boy am I glad I did!

It really is a great game. Probably not as good as you're lead to believe but it is definitely worth checking out. Combat does get much easier (some may argue too easy) once you upgrade your weapons and plasmids but the environments/setting always changes and is fantastic and so is the story.

I say get it!

From funville where good games and I play together. Must play Half-Life 2 again!

Half-Life 2 is the only shooter that I would put above BioShock, and it's close. There actually are probably only a handful of games period that I would put above BioShock.

But hey, what do I know?

If both came out at the same time. Bioshock would win. Your opinion is based off of nastagia.

It's a pretty awesome game. I will agree though, the shooting elements aren't great. I found myself never using much more than plasmids and the shotgun/grenade launcher. I don't think it's the combat that makes it stand out anyways though, play it for the atmosphere and story, you will have fun.

I personally loved it. But yeah, it's definitely the story/atmosphere that makes the game.

I think I distracted myself from the repetitive combat with the weapon upgrades, diaries, and research.

of course, I was playing on 360, so I had achievement goals with all of that.

Bioshock was fun. You folks who say it sucked are fools. No, it's no Half-Life, but it's it's still enjoyable. Plasmids are way better than the weapons. One I didn't get the first go around was the spring plasmid, where it launches people into the air. It's one of my favorites. If you can launch someone in the air and have a Big Daddy hypnotized and shoot his ass before he hits the ground, you may get a large boner. I did.

It's better than any Halo, CoD, and even Crysis. But it's Half-Life, Deus Ex(only the first one), or System Shock 2.

It's wonderful game. Enjoy it, let it sink in, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Experience as much as you can for yourself. Also, I think the demo sucks.

I don't understand why everyone thinks Half-Life is such a great series. Honestly, it's boring as shit and the story feels really tacked on. It was nice to see some emotion coming into the characters (particularly at the start of HL2 Episode 2) but too little too late. Don't even get me started about the tacked-on vehicle controls.

See? You can do that with anything. That said, Bioshock is just an FPS but an excellent one. If you enjoy storytelling as an art form, it is unmatched up until the third act (so, it's kinda like reading Stephen King).
